About the Author

Born in a small town in Ohio, MARY OLIVER published her first book of poetry in 1963 at the age of twenty-eight. Over the course of her long career, she has received numerous awards. Her fourth book, American Primitive, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984. She has led workshops and held residencies at various colleges and universities, including Bennington College, where she held the Catharine Osgood Foster Chair for Distinguished Teaching. Oliver currently lives in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

The 11 pen & ink illustrations are lovely. The 35 "Dog Songs and One Essay" are tributes to the individual dogs Mary Oliver has known and loved. But none of them touched my heart like a wonderful dog poem by Dalia Shevin, titled,In My Good Death:I will find myself in high summer grass.The humming shock of the golden light.And I will hear them before I see themand know right away who is bounding across the field to meet me.All my good dogs will come then, their wet noses bumping against my palms,their hot panting, their rough, faithful tongues.Their eyes young and shiny again.The dense scruff of their fur,The unspeakable softness of their bellies,their velvet ears against my cheeks.I will bend to them, my face covered with their kisses,My hands full of them.In the grass I will let them knock me down.".

My wife lovvvvves dogs--and not just our dog (though he gets special royalty status)--AND Mary Oliver. So when I bumped into this book, I knew I had to get it for her right away. And she's delighted with the book. Even I (also a lover of dogs--though less appreciative of poetry) was charmed--and more important--touched by MO's words and the poems in this slim volume (which include both previously published and new works).Mary Oliver is actually one of the few poets who does move me--and obviously I'm not alone. Probably some experts and academics will scoff, but to me she has both a delicacy and down-to-earth quality that offer grace so even someone like myself, who might be a bit tone deaf to the mystery and romance of more obscure works, really sees/listens (

I love Mary Oliver's poetry, but this is the best!!! My best friends are my 5 4-legged companions and this book of poems about the beloved dog is amazing!!! Some of her poems in this book brought tears to my eyes while making my laugh too. Her work is amazing and simple and just lovely. If you love poetry and dogs, go for it.... you will not be disappointed. I read the whole book aloud to my dogs and I know they savored every moment too.

I was really looking forward to Mary Oliver's Dog Songs, and hoped I could share the book with my dog loving husband and son in law... no such luck. Not bad, and the illustrations nearly made up for my disappointment with the poems. I guess it's just I expect so MUCH from Mary Oliver, and these are only OK. Cute pictures, though.

When I found out her new book would be published in October, I pre-ordered it. How could I resist a book named DOG SONGS?I read these poems aloud to my dogs. Oliver reminds us that our dogs live in the moment, but they also feel our emotions. We know when we love a dog that its lifespan will probably be shorter than our own, and we must come to terms with the grief.In this volume, Oliver's poems give the various dogs, some hers, some from the neighborhood,voices. They do speak to us.Her Percy poems (Percy now deceased) are magical. She says, "For often I see his shape in the clouds/and this is/a continual blessing." I look for my dogs in the clouds too. I know this feeling.Other poems celebrate dogs running leash-free, dogs making friends, dogs sharing their finds (dead fish), the dog's adoration of his human: "Percy, meanwhile,/leans against me and gazes up into my face. As though I were just as wonderful/as the perfect moon."If you love a dog, pick up these poems. They will help you celebrate your love, and when that someday comes, grieve the loss. There was so much to this story that I didn't know and much of it is so shocking that the book actually feels dangerous to read. If you are interested in whistleblowers or the grift, corruption and exploitation of human life that our American society is built out of from top to bottom, you must read this and get the full story of Karen Silkwood.The story really only begins with her death...after the famous movie ends, that's when things get truly bizarre, creepy, horrifying... Can't recommend this highly enough. Better than any fictional spy novel you're likely to pick up.

Thorough and credible dissertation on the murder of Karen Silkwood, who worked in a plutonium plant at a time when safety controls and other measures were rather volatile. This book talks about Silkwood the person, then Silkwood the employee. She uncovered serious violations of safety and quality control protocols in her plant. She worked closely with her union and she tried to communicate via news media what was happening. After contaminating her deliberately with radioactive material, the powers that be eventually cause her to wreck her car while she was on her way to delivering the evidence to the media. This is followed by an intense and convoluted cover-up. The book is lengthy and filled with amazing and frightening evidence of abuse of power to make sure this woman's testimony never saw the light of day. An interesting read about an event that took place nearly 40 years ago. Some things never change like Corporate immunity and government corruption.

Mr. Richard Rasheed showed Ms. Karen Silkwood, for who, she was: a decent human being. She was victimized, for bein' a decent human being- by her employer. If(!), businesses exercised basic human decency- unions, wouldn't, be- a necessary(!) "evil". God bless Karen Silkwood, for TRYIN', to make the workenvironment a safer place, for her fellow employees!!! Respectfully, Frank Medina

I don't remember what prompted me to read this, but I'm glad I did. I passed it along to a coworker. The book gives a very in-depth look and each page made me want to read another. Don't get me wrong, the actual tone is very dry, a lot of court records/transcript snippits... like reading your washing machine manual, but the subject matter kept me riveted. The possibilities the author exposes were fascinating. I loved the photos -- wish there had been more. I can best summarize this book with the adage, "leave them wanting more." Reading this book made me want to know what happened next to some of the key players... so I Googled -- but that left me wondering who was tracking me! Really made me think twice about the current allegations of the government spying on people -- powerful world leaders down to John Q Public. Would definitely recommend this book.

The movie was a touch of the story to peak my interest but I knew something was missing. I began research on google and found this book that seems to match several of the missing pieces in the movie . I also learned that there may other reactors appear to lack proper regulation. I read the book more as a reference book to fill in the gaps such as Silkwood was an honor student. When too many incidents occur at once with Silkwood and the power plant, it is hard to make a smooth transition in a book so I knew it would bounce from one area to the next and what to expect.

the author was consistant with other writings about the corruption of the a.e.c. , n.r.c. the f.b.i. as well as the company she worked for.money talks - guilty walks ! the question of right or wrong never entered because of the judges restrictions placed by the judges and the aggressive though "bulls*** " presentation by the defending high priced lawyers especially in appeal. too many unanswered questions not properly investigated by local as well as state and federal orgs overly interested in covering everything up . a lot of money spent do'en it which should have gone to the slikwoods and others

For those of you who think it is easy to write a parenting book ...think again. It is a real art to be able to strike just the right tone to reach tired and overwhelmed parents. Deborah Gilboa does this well with her direct and concise writing while her caring, concern and experience shines through.Smart kids will try many things to get the attention, affection and love that they need to thrive in this world, so it is sad to see a loving family spiral out of control when a toddler, child or pre-teen is going through a rough patch. Dr. G highlights some common developmental battles and behavior problems and doles out many creative methods to prevent a real trainwreck for families. Her ideas empower parents to be the leaders in a style that emparts respect with equal doses emotional control and thoughtful preparation.While many parenting books are written by physicians or mental health professionals, most cannot avoid the common pitfall of using large words and complicated sentences to relay straightforward messages. This works poorly with many exhausted parents and is counterproductive for kids. Dr. G keeps her suggests short and simple; perfect for this age group.I also find this book to be nicely balanced. Equal attention is given to action and feelings, caregiving to discipline, competition versus cooperation, while all the time respecting the special qualities of each child. Finally, a parenting book that hands out practical, easy-to-understand advice, that actually work. I love that Dr. Gilboa has divided the book into sections by the types of values you want to see in your children, and further into the different age groups. This way, parents with kids at different ages can refer to the section that applies most to them. It's a book that I can see myself reaching out for, time and time again, as my children grow older. Dr. Gilboa's friendly and down-to-earth tone is also great, I can almost picture her sitting across from me, offering her suggestions as a friend. I highly recommend this!

Written in friendly honest way, you don't feel like you're reading this book. You feel like you are chatting with Dr. G over a cup of coffee. It's full of practical suggestions of things to incorporate right away into your family life. Nothing vague or mystical. Just roll up your sleeves and get to work! Lots of parenting equity here, too. This is NOT a book for moms only or just dads. This is a book for parents who want some concrete ways to raise great kids.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I've recommended it to all of my friends! It's an easy read with tons of practical advice-- so many moments of, "that's so simple, why didn't I think of that?!" Dr. G hits that sweet spot of helping you, as a parent, feel confident and in control--while also teaching your children important life skills (respect! resilience! responsibility!) and always making sure that they feel safe, loved and respected.

Practical,easy to understand advice that really improves communication and behavior, at least in 10 year old boys!!

Don't have to read the entire book. Can read what chapters pertain to your specific needs.

Good book on parenting however, lots of common sense facts provided. I didnâ€™t finish the book; it was boring.

I collect art monographs and have an extensive library, including all of the catalogue raisonnes of warhol (which were $299 each when they were first released).With that being said, aside from those raisonnes and the â€œGiant Sizeâ€, there are not any really comprehensive monographs on warhol that are as great as this one.This book covers the retrospective currently going on on warhol and there are works that span his entire career. The book is printed in china which usually indicates a lower caliber paper quality and construction, but for the cost of $50, same day shipping, and 400 pages, you are getting a great value for your money.If you want to start learning about Warhol on a budget, this is an excellent monograph to start with. If you have the money, purchase the â€œgiant sizeâ€ monograph as well and you will have an incredible insight on the artist and a sample of all the different decades of Warhols work.

I first borrowed this book from the library to learn about shade, of which I had very little knowledge or inspiration, and I needed both badly. The text of this book, along with numerous pictures, clearly shaped for me a much better understanding of shade, and more importantly an excitement about shade. The trend today is to put some insufficient text about garden design, etc., and then the remaining large majority of a book becomes nothing but a plant listing, which is certainly often helpful. Druse's book clearly exceeds other books on shade I have (including the higher rated book by Carey) in that his plant lists occur in appropriate parts of the highly informative passages on shade, so while I am learning all these amazing things he's writing about I can also see a large number of appropriate plants. His explanations and writing really changed how I viewed shade, and I am now so excited about the shady areas of my yard. Before, shade was just that place where "real" plants couldn't live, so you threw a bunch of hosta down. Now shade is full of layers, and texture, and more colors than I imagined. Druse turned shade into a place I wanted to be, and was excited to have. I continued to keep this book from the library so long it was clear I needed my own copy. Druse's book on shade is much more comprehensive than others I have, and has been more educational and inspiring. It is my go-to book.

I have all of Ken Druse's gardening books and this one doesn't disappoint. Beautiful photos, relevant advice, and lots of suggestions for growing wonderful things in the shade.

This is an up to date book loaded with good information and great photographs. I liked it so much I bought another to send as a gift!

It makes a good case for shade gardens as a way to adapt to temperature increases now and in the years to come. Also the emphasis on planting trees especially in urban environments. Overall a good book for planting in the shade but it left me wanting more input regarding climate change adaptation strategies.

I recently saw this book at my library & loved the way the author wrote about gardening. Very informative guide to a shade garden & gardening ideas. Beautiful photographs so I had to have this and three other books by the same author!

About the Author

Elsie Campbell is best known for her exquisite hand-quilted, award-winning quilts, but she started out, like many other quilters, in the field of dressmaking. She grew up in the small community of Deer Creek, Oklahoma, attending the Deer Creek Mennonite Church and learning her quilting skills from her mother and the Deer Creek Mennonite WomenÂ’s Mission Society. Elsie Campbell has written a devilishly clever book that will appeal to quilters who love finding simple ways to make blocks and quilts that look hard to make. I bought this book for the pattern that is on the cover and was not disappointed. She has discovered a way to make triangular blocks that are more foolproof and certainly much faster than those constructed with the usual methods we are presented with. In addition to the cover quilt there are two other patterns in the book that I definitely want to make (I usually consider myself lucky if I find one pattern, let alone three, in a book that I genuinely like). Bravo, and highly recommended.

Elsie Campbell is easy to understand and has lots of good tips. The patterns provided are beautiful and doable for beginner quilters. A great buy!

I will be taking a class with Elsie Campbell, and wanted to understand her approach better beforehand. This book has clear instructions, beautiful photos, and opportunities for inspiration and personalization. I plan on following several patterns in this book to make some heirloom quilts!

This book is an introduction to Amazon ECHO for people at different stages: Those who never heard of ECHO who want to understand what it is; those who are seeking more information to make a purchasing decision; and those who already have an ECHO who are looking for more information about what all it is capable of doing.

I've just bought my new Amazon Echo, and a friend of mine has suggested this book. I'm still following the steps and discovering new features of this device, but this book is a major help in this adventure. Highly recommended.
