Review

“According to spouses Kramer and Harris, ‘Women don’t need to be fixed,’ but society does, and quickly. The authors proceed to identify a serious advancement problem for women, who make up 45% of entry-level professionals but only 17% of C-suite executives. They blame this gap on the pervasiveness of gender stereotypes, which lead to a kind of ‘benevolent sexism’ that’s as damaging as it is unintentional. Kramer and Harris acknowledge that systemic change is important, but it takes time, which leaves current would-be executives in the dust. The authors discuss managing perceptions, being aware of body language, crafting communications, and using anger to its best effect … a well-organized, well-thought-out call to action…” - Publishers Weekly“Breaking Through Bias teaches women strategies they can use to counteract the negative effect of gender biases, while showing men what actions they can take to help advance their women colleagues. This book deserves widespread attention!” - Hon. Jessica A. O'Brien, president, Women's Bar Association of Illinois“Women are more qualified, educated, and prepared for leadership roles in every field—business, law, politics, and technology—than ever before. Yet, well into the 21st century, we still encounter the old barriers of prejudice and gender bias. Breaking Through Bias provides women with hugely impactful tools that can be put to use right now to confront gender issues and, yes, partner with enlightened men to promote our advancement.” - Jan Schakowsky, congresswoman, 9th District of Illinois“Change cannot come fast enough in the pursuit of gender equality in the workplace. In Breaking Through Bias, Andie and Al provide strategies that allow women—and men—to create their own change by teaching us to communicate in a way that overcomes biases and stereotypes. This information is invaluable for all professionals looking to accelerate within inclusive workplaces around the globe.” - Deborah Gillis, president & CEO, Catalyst“It is exciting to see the ideas that Andie has been using for so long to personally mentor women now being made available on a broad scale in this terrific book. A great read for any woman who wants to take control of her career and be seen as the smart, capable woman she is.” - Julie Howard, chairman & CEO at Navigant Consulting, Inc.“Andie and Al tackle the all-important subject of gender-correlated communication styles in the workplace from a fresh perspective. Combining their own real-life experiences (as a woman and as a man) with solid research, Breaking Through Bias is a highly readable book. Offering both practical advice for women and essential knowledge to the men who want to support them, this is a book to read and to share with others.” - Carol Frohlinger, president, Negotiating Women, Inc.“Barriers to gender equality persist. This groundbreaking book encourages talented women to persevere on the road to achieving the success they seek. This book should be mandatory reading for women both at the onset of their careers and on the path to the top of their profession.” - Laurel G. Bellows, managing principal, The Bellows Law Group, P.C. and past president, American Bar Association“Andie and Al have written an exceptional book – and an important one. It reflects decades of experience in thinking about how to overcome gender bias, and is chock-full of practical and accessible strategies for surmounting the challenges that women – and men – face. It should be read and studied by anyone seeking to win in the worldwide battle for talent.” - Jeffrey E. Stone, chairman, McDermott Will & Emery LLP“Andie has worked tirelessly on the advancement of women in workplaces for so many years, and the wisdom and insights from that work are elegantly captured in this book! Breaking Through Bias is a great resource for women navigating the realities of workplace gender bias and the men who want to make their workplaces work better for everyone! Andie and Al’s advice is practical without asking women to be something other than who they are, which is why it will also be effective for those who utilize it.” - Dr. Arin Reeves, author of One Size Never Fits All: Business Development Strategies for Women (And Most Men) and The Next IQ: The Next Generation of Intelligence for 21st Century Leaders“Breaking Through Bias serves as a wake-up call for senior business leaders. The book explores common gender stereotypes and discusses the discriminatory bias that results. Based on my own work on culture change over the past five years, I am convinced that bias in the workplace is real. Things aren’t equal. I can’t allow myself to be satisfied with an environment where female employees have to expend energy combatting bias, so culture change is necessary – but it is slow work. This book offers insights and practical approaches to help women manage the environment as it exists. It is essential reading for modern businesspeople of either gender.” - Lee Richard Tschanz, vice president North America, Sales, Services, and Solutions, Rockwell Automation“The medical profession is no more free of gender bias than all other professions that make up our economy. From the early stages of training to achieving the attending physician status, bias exists at every level. Thus, I am enthusiastically recommending that women medical students, residents, and fellow colleagues read and re-read Breaking Through Bias.” - Neelum T. Aggarwal, MD, Chief Diversity Officer of American Medical Women's Association; chair of Mentors, Advisors and Peers Committee, Women in Bio (Chicago); associate professor, Departments of Neurological Sciences and Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center“Andie and Al have created the perfect primer to navigate through the treacherous waters of gender bias. This is not a book you read and donate to your neighborhood library! You’ll want to keep it handy for its many insights and apply them to the countless scenarios that emerge throughout your personal and professional life. This is the book I wish I had more than 35 years ago when I launched my career in public relations.” - Cheryl Procter-Rogers, PR strategist and executive coach, A Step Ahead PR Consulting and Coaching

As a woman lawyer in a particularly male-dominate practice area, I cannot over-emphasize how relevant the advice in this book is. For nearly a decade, I have watched men say and do things that, if said or done by me, would be viewed as "too much" or, at best, "intense." Men, on the other hand, tend to get praise for the exact same speech contents and, often, patterns. Unlike a number of books on women in the workplace recently, that Andie's husband, Al, co-wrote this gives it a unique spin by providing the viewpoint of a senior male lawyer on women in the legal workplace. That, and the myriad examples from Andie's long career in (also) a very male-dominated practice area are two of several characteristics of this book that set it apart from similar volumes.Far from a book that's just for lawyers, this is a book that any woman or person dealing with women (so, presumably, just about everyone) in corporate America needs to read. These communication issues arise in all types of workplaces, and progressing away from the negative examples will benefit all businesses, regardless of field, because it will permit them to learn to absorb ideas from all members of the team. This open dialog almost surely has to be a positive for not only employee satisfaction, but for the bottom line, as exchanges of better and more ideas can only lead to better and more innovation.

One of my young mentees recently complained to me that her annual review included a criticism that she was not "nurturing enough" of her male direct reports. She wondered if a man would be dinged with the same words. I immediately recommended Breaking Through Bias to her. Finally, someone said what needed to be said about how discriminatory stereotypes affect our promotions, pay, reviews and careers. For so many years, women lawyers simply doing their jobs was characterized as "aggressive" or "bitchy", while men "behaving" the same way were called "effective" or "strong". Thank you Andrea Kramer and Alton Harris for this superb book on communication which I wish I had access to 35 years ago at the beginning of my legal career. The specificity of the teachings in this most valuable handbook is so useful. Lawyers, executives and any woman climbing the steps in the business world will find this book a must have. I will assign it to all of my law students, men and women, and hope this next generation of business professionals will learn how words influence careers.

With a daughter who just was sworn in, I thought this would be the perfect gift for a young female lawyer. I have been in and around lawyers and law firms for better than 44 years, and have watched the ranks of women increase from nearly nonexistent to dominant roles in private firms and the public sector. I have known enough women attorneys to know the road to success is littered with potholes and pedants and pompous partners."Breaking Through Bias" provides wonderful and practical advices on how to navigate what is still a male-dominated profession at the top levels. And the authors have made this readable, not preachy. Every young lawyer--male or female--should read this insightful book. And it wouldn't hurt the managing partners to digest the wisdom here.

There are a lot of books written about this topic, but none of them that I have read (or seen, for that matter) are as practical or as well-structured as this one -- nor have I seen anything on this topic written by a man and woman together. Although the book focuses on communication techniques in a business setting, I actually thought the application of these techniques is much broader. My favorite aspects include:- The end of each chapter lists USEFUL (not just fluffy) "take-aways," giving readers the tools they need to apply the information described in each chapter. Each one is like a "to do" list of things to try.- Vignettes appear throughout the book that describe real-life situations where one of the authors encountered someone (typically in a mentoring context) dealing with the issues raised in that chapter.- The authors confess and address their own challenge and struggles with different biases. I was so impressed with how honest and authentic they are about their experience. That added so much to the value of the book, without being overwhelming.- Although I'm not an academic (and I don't think the authors are either), I respect the amount of research and analysis that went into this book. There are numerous quotations to academic journals -- not just other business advice-filled memoirs.- This book addresses some significant issues that are usually otherwise avoided, including discussing stereotypes that women have against other women and bullying.Things I wish the book included:- A workbook to go with it or a guided journal to help track progress and growth in each area.- Discussion questions for reading this in a group setting - I think this would be great to use for coaching/mentoring groups or corporate book clubs with a professional theme.- Expanded discussions about parenthood in the workplace, and more of the male perspective (most of the other chapters were pretty even, but the "Work and the Rest of Your Life" chapter seemed more focused on the issues that mothers face.- Some of the quizzes referenced in the "Key Takeaways" part at the end of each chapter - or just one website with links to all of them. Some of them looked really interesting, but it was a struggle to type in the long addresses.Overall, I an easy but valuable read - you could get through this on a plane (I did!) and finish it being inspired, with a roadmap of practice advice to try.

Fantastic textbook, actually used for the Master Gardener training program in NC. It covers ALL areas of gardening, from foundational soils, integrated pest management, lawns (warm and cool season), trees, fruits, vegetables, natives, propagation and much, much more. Lots of color photos, FAQ's, case studies, helpful charts and tables. Most importantly, it covers the widely differing growing zones within NC, from the mountains to the coastal plain. This book would also be of value to those in VA, SC, and GA as well.

The information in this book is all available for free on the Extention website, but I find it much easier to use textbook-like materials in paper book form. The book, so far, is easy to read and informative. I'm looking forward to marking it up and dog-earing the heck out of it.

Fantastic book for those either moving to NC or living their. Goes into great detail about planting and items that your going to find in NC.

High quality book covering most gardening topics.

This book covers everything you need to know about gardening not just for NC Gardeners as most information applies anywhere. Get pictures and diagrams. This would make a great gift for any gardener.

Book is a great resource for everyone, if you garden daily or just seasonal. A must read stays on my coffee table for easy access. I have highlighted and added a lot of notes for my use.

What a beautifully laid out useful book. Very easy to research a subject and find your answer

As a Wake County, NC master gardener, this is the book our classes were taught from. Many of our guest speakers were the NC State University professors that were involved in writing this text. It definitely is evidence-based, high-quality information that is an excellent resource for anyone looking to start a garden or advance their gardening knowledge to the next level. It has GORGEOUS pictures and is packed with valuable information. A steal at this price! If this was available before I took the master gardener classes I may have skipped the classes and used this instead. :)(NOTE: although I'm from the area where the text was written and took classes from contributors, I am providing this review on my own accord. I am also not a verified purchaser for this product because I received a pdf copy during my master gardener class and then a final hardcover copy when they were published as part of my class fee. I was simply so impressed with the hardcover copy when I received it that I felt it deserved a review.)
