Review

Praise for No Immediate Danger:“Carbon Ideologies is an almanac of global energy use . . . a travelogue to natural landscapes riven by energy production . . . a compassionate work of anthropology that tries to make sense of man’s inability to weigh future cataclysm against short-term comfort . . . one of the most honest books yet written on climate change.” —Nathaniel Rich, The Atlantic“No Immediate Danger tussles with the comprehension-defying nature of climate change . . . terrifying insights are to be found . . . It embodies the confusion of our current moment, the insidiousness of disbelief, and the mania-inducing reality that our greatest threat is the hardest to act upon. It is a feverish, sprawling archive of who we are, and what we’ve wrought.” —The Washington Post“In the face of complex, contested data, Vollmann is a diligent and perceptive guide. He’s also deeply mindful of those who’ve been sacrificed in the name of profits and political expediency. Amid the Trump administration’s rollbacks of environment protections, these are incontestably important books.” —The San Francisco Chronicle“Vollmann’s many fans . . . will not be disappointed . . . he packs research and voice into his impassioned works . . . Reading these two books did have an effect on me; I became even more conscious of the resources I waste in my own life.” —John Schwartz, The New York Times Book Review   “One of the enjoyable things about this massive work is the way Vollmann employs irony, and that bluntest of irony called sarcasm, throughout the volume. He can be quite humorous. You might even call this the Infinite Jest of climate books . . . there’s something admirable, even noble, about the sheer time and effort—and sheer humanity—that went into these volumes.” —The Baffler   “Equal parts gonzo journalism, hand-wringing confessional, and one hot mess . . . the books document Vollmann’s quest to understand how capitalism, consumerism, and fossil fuels are ruining the planet.” —Sierra“The best part of the books [are] the conversations Vollmann had during his travels, the sensitive histories he gives of the places he visited, and the moral impressions those conversations and places have made on him. It’s these parts that made Carbon Ideologies a unique, lasting, definitive contribution to the global warming literature.” —The Humanist   “An elegy to our damned epoch that’s also a work of enlightenment and education . . . the book is a performance of the vexations involved in trying to understand our energy reality . . . [Vollmann’s] project—not unlike that of his historical fiction—is to show with utmost fidelity what it was like to be a human involved in terrible things.” —The Los Angeles Review of Books   “[Provides] profound insights into both Japanese society and universal themes regarding the human response to and preparation for major disasters and tragedies.” —The International Examiner“Vigilant in his precision, open-mindedness, and candor, Vollmann takes on global warming . . . [His] careful descriptions, touching humility, molten irony, and rueful wit, combined with his addressing readers in ‘the hot dark future,’ makes this compendium of statistics, oral history, and reportage elucidating, compelling, and profoundly disquieting.” —ALA Booklist (starred)“[A] rewarding, impeccably researched narrative . . . Vollmann apologizes to the future that we’ve ruined, charting how our choices of energy sources made the planet scarcely inhabitable.” —Kirkus Reviews

I love Vollmann's writing, particularly the novels but also Rising Up and Rising Down, so I was disappointed in this, the first volume of a two volume work on the damage we are doing to our world with our energy production. The first 200 pages here, a "Primer" on the different energy schemes, was excellent, vintage Vollmann. But the rest of this volume, on nuclear, is primarily a 300 page description of Vollmann wandering around the area of the Fukushima disaster evacuation zones alone with occasional side treks to Hanford and such, with Vollman recording every reading he took with a "frisker" scintillation counter. The vast majority of these hundreds and hundreds of readings are remarkably low and I'm not sure what Volmann's point is with them. They were boring as hell and I can't see they served any purpose. Added to this is that in the area of nuclear energy, Vollman's science is very very poor. He confuses terms and seems to not understand how radioactive decay works in terms of the harm it causes. For example, it seems he confuses the particles ejected from a decay with the radioactive material itself. In the end, he convinces that the Fukushima disaster was very damaging long term and was caused by mankind's hubris with the risks but in the meantime, I could not wait until it was over. I am however looking forward to reading the second volume on carbon based technologies as the Primer convinced me he is on more solid ground in that area.

On p. 3, Vollmann says about the world in which we all live and whosenatural wealth humanity is presently squandering away:"Nothing can be done to save it; therefore, nothing needs to bedone." Had Vollmann followed his own logic, he would not havewritten his two books. Why did he write them anyway? Becausehe "felt ashamed of doing nothing" (p. 13). I am sure many otherreaders feel the same way. Even if nothing they can do willavert the catastrophe, they do not want to do nothing. Now why does the author consider writing books as doingsomething, isn't writing books business as usual for authors? There is an important difference. As another Amazon reviewersaid, these books are an "act of civil disobedience against thedictates of commercial publishing." Vollman used his socialstanding as a famous writer in order to undermine the restraintshe and other writers meet in the capitalist book publishingenvironment. He went to the limits of what he could get awaywith to write a book which told the truth instead of pleasing thereader. This should give other readers ideas what they can do. Thereader forgive me for boasting what I myself did. Beforeretirement I was University professor. I shared Vollmann's viewsthat our civilization will not survive the environmentaldegradation which humanity is causing. I told my students thatthey were in for a tough ride in the second half of this century, and I could back this up with science. Enrollment was low, butmany of those who came to my classes were grateful because it wasso rare that someone told them the unvarnished truth which was soimportant for them. My colleagues thought I was violatingacademic standards, since I imposed my views on the studentsinstead of letting them come to their own conclusion. Since Iwas tenured, they could not get rid of me easily, therefore theytried to ignore me. I think I used my academic freedom to itslimits just as Vollmann used his reputation as an author to hislimits. Now after my retirement I am paying more attention to my ownlifestyle. I live in voluntary carbon-restrained simplicity. Ido not own a car, I no longer fly, I heat or cool my home only toa minimum, I take vacations locally and try to still have afulfilled life. And indeed, my life is interesting because sucha different lifestyle creates many frictions. The most hurtful wasthat I have to disappoint my children because I am not flying tobe a good grandfather to my grandchildren. My defense is: I amnot telling others what they should be doing, and in return Iresist any social pressures and conventions which force me to dowhat the others are doing.I added my own example to Vollmann's in order to encourage othersto use their own social assets and leverage to undermine theconstraints that keep everybody paralyzed. Because people DOcare whether civilization has a future or not. Vollmann comesclose to saying this on p. 12 when he refuses to condemnindividual actors who have best intentions even while destroyingthe future of their children. This tragic paradox is not createdby individual weakness, but by the capitalist social relationswhich force everyone to continue on the path to overconsumptiondisaster.

I have read all of the work of the astonishingly prolific American author, William T. Vollmann, from the obsessive beauty with which he invokes the lives of junkies, whores and transvestites in San Francisco's Tenderloin District (Whores for Gloria, The Royal Family, my favorite The Rainbow Stories, and volumes more) to his National Book Award winning Europe Central, which follows various character threads around WWII, including a conscienceful Nazi officer tasked with delivering poison gas for the camps and who buries his loads til they become inactive, and the inner monologue of a Leopold Bloom-sounding Dmitri Shostakovich, to his various studies of the downtrodden exploited and suffering (his 7-volume Rising Up and Rising Down, Imperial, Poor People, An Afghan Picture Book,) to his still-in-process Seven Dreams series of novels chronicling all manner and history of the invasion of North America. His latest, Carbon Ideologies, is an exhaustive study of the impact on our world by energy production. A 200pp Primer begins Volume One: No Immediate Danger with numerous tables and incalculably informative studies and data about all the impacts of all the various energies on our planet and societies, then proceeds to focus on Nuclear Energy, specifically the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster. Volume Two: No Good Alternative, which I'm reading now, covers the rest: Coal, Oil, Fracking. This is formidable and essential work, of course to little use to those who won't or more likely can't read it.Vollmann is peerlessly important.

One of the most important books of our time. If Jeff Bezos read this book, he'd realize two things.. We need a base on Mars to assure humanity of its continuation, and if not we need to get up off our collective asses and save our environment. The earth will be just fine without life as know it on the planet.

Attaching in Adoption: Practical Tools for Today's Parents

Review

Attaching in Adoption' is a valuable resource for parents not only as they contemplate building their family through adoption, but also as they travel child's emotionally challenged path towards mental health and happiness. Deborah Gray has described attachment and all of the skills and responses that relate to an individual's attachment style and degree of attachment, and she has done do in a manner easily understood by non-professionals. The chapter on developmental stages is an invaluable tool for parents to assess their child's emotional age and determine what tasks have yet to be mastered. Parents who understand and implement what tasks have yet to be mastered. Parents who understand and implement the wisdom and methods described in this book will certainly strengthen their families! Author: Nancy Spoolstra, D.V.M., adoptive and foster parent and Executive Director of the Attachment Disorder NetworkAttaching in Adoption: Practical Tools for Today's Parents' is a brilliantly written sensitive educational journey into the development world of attachment. The book is a comprehensive and clear depiction of the importance of attachment, the challenge faced by parents adopting high risk children, and the negative effects of trauma and grief on the development of a secure attachment. The book reflects Ms. Gray's depth of perception, understanding of child development, empathy, and attunement with the children and families she has served in her therapeutic practice. Ms. Gray provides practical common sense tools for parents that can support them in developing skills that will enhance healthy relationships and connections with their children. Ms. Gray is realistic and honest as she speaks to parents. She empowers them to take charge in a nurturing way. She respects the importance of the balance of nurture and structure. The chapters building emotional intelligence, forming a team of support, and suggestions of when and where to seek professional help prove a hopefulness that there is a way out of the darkness of emotional chaos into the light of safety and trust for children suffering from attachment problems. Although "Attachment in Adoption" is written primarily for parents. I would encourage my fellow professionals to include this book on their "must read" list. It will assist them in their overall understanding of attachment and in their therapeutic work with adoptive parents and children Author: Beverly Cuevas, LCSW, ACSW, Co-founder of Attachment Center Northwest, Founding member and Board member of ATTACH, Founding Board member of ADI (Attachment Disorder Institute)Deborah Gray had written an excellent book on parenting adopted children who resist being parented. It is not a cookbook, but rather a comprehensive book on parenting adopted children with attachment problems. That is why it is excellent. Deborah does not take the easy road of simply giving recommendations for various behavior problems. Instead she takes the more arduous route of first trying to help parents understand the meaning of their adopted child's behaviors. After helping parents to understand the reasons for their child's behaviors, she then gives them the tools for developing interventions that are most likely to fit their unique child. Deborah asks us to go beyond concluding that an adopted child has Reactive Attachment Disorder because they manifest a list of symptoms. She asks us first to also understand the impact of grieving and trauma on a child's functioning. She also asks us to know more about the effects of anxiety, cultural changes, and various other diagnoses, such as ADHD, FAE/FAS, and Learning Disorders. Most importantly, Deborah teaches us about the seven stages of attachment, beginning at birth and extending through adolescence, and she helps us to be aware of various interventions that can facilitate development at each stage. Finally, she tells us about emotional intelligence, its failure to develop following early abuse and neglect, and the importance of understanding ways to facilitate it. Deborah's contribution to parenting adopted children with attachment problems is substantial. It is based on understanding and having empathy of the meaning behind a child's symptoms, along with effective, sensitive, and well-matched parental interventions. At the same time, she addresses the necessity of parental self-care, is parents are to persistently provide the quality of care that their adopted child requires. After reading her book, many parents will feel certain that Deborah understands their child and their family. These same parents will also be likely to understand their child more deeply themselves, and at the same time be able to develop the unique practical skills that parenting their child requires. Author: Dan Hughes, Ph.D. author of 'Facilitating Developmental Attachment and Building the Bonds of AttachmentDeborah Gray's work captures theory, practicality, and sensitivity toward traumatized children - all in one book. Too many books have only one of these components, and her integration of may important facets of all three, comfortably leads the reader to a clear understanding of how children are hurt and how families help them heal. I will be extremely comfortable recommending 'Attaching in Adoption' to parents and professionals. I also think it is suitable for adolescents to read. It would help them understand so many of their issues - particularly around the entire birth family "web' and issues of shame and self-blame. I like this book! Author: Gregory C. Keck, Ph.D., Founder, Attachment and Bonding Center of Ohio and co-author of 'Adopting the Hurt Child' and 'Parenting the 'Hurt Child'Gray, a clinical social worker specializing in attachment, grief and trauma, has penned a comprehensive guidebook for adoptive parents, taking an in-depth look at how children and families adjust. The author notes that many of today's adoptions involve older children, who may have been abused or neglected, or who may have spent years in institutions or various foster situations; due to their past experiences these children may have difficulty attaching to their adoptive parents. Explaining that attachment forms the template for future adult relationships, Gray stresses how important it is for adoptive parents to be patient in forging this new bond. She advises creating a high structure/high nurture environment for the child, and instructs parents to find out about their child's background. The book covers many issues, including cross-cultural and interracial adoption, religious concerns and other complications for attaching, such as ADHD and learning disabilities. Gray also includes a detailed exploration of development delays common in kids who have been adopted later in life. While the book is densely written, it will nevertheless be invaluable for adoptive parents. Gray compassionately helps readers form realistic expectations, while offering a myriad of suggestions for families and children striving to form lasting, loving relationships. Author: Publishers WeeklyI have no idea what percentage of a personality is determined by genes. I don't know what a percentage of personality is. But if there's anything I can do to load the dice of fate in my child's favor, I will do it. Most adoptive parents feel the same. 'Attaching in Adoption: Practical Tools for Today's Parents' is for us. I wish this book had been around a decade ago, when my husband and I first started thinking about adoption. I wish it had been around when we brought our daughter home two years later. And I wish it had been around when our daughter was 21 months old and the babysitter quit and a new one started and our forlorn, frantic child screamed all day, every day, for a week. How we searched Penelope Leach, T. Berry Brazelton, Richard Ferber, and all the other illustrious names in childrearing literature! Their advice, while sometimes helpful, didn't quite fit. What we needed was a Deborah D. Gray to set out - in straightforward, unthreatening language - practical tips for responding to the challenges all adopted children face when they leave one home (their birth parents', their foster family's, or their orphanage) and enter another. Our child's adjustment was relatively easy. But if we'd known more, it could have been easier. 'Attaching in Adoption' covers the full range of attachment challenges - from the transitory to the traumatic and from infancy to adulthood. Gray's approach is positive, practical and realistic, providing age-specific advice with clear explanations of developmental stages for adopted children and checking age-specific advice with clear explanations of developmental stages for adopted children and checklists to help parents assess how their child is doing at each stage. The best part, for those of us who adopted before this book was published, is that it's never too late to learn. For those struggling with serious attachment disorders, this book could be a lifesaver. I agree with Nancy Thomas [the author of 'When Love Is Not Enough: A Guide to Parenting Children with RAD] who wrote: 'This is the most comprehensive work on the subject I have ever enjoyed reading...My wish would be that every adoptive parent could read this book before beginning the journey to adopt.' Author: Adoptive FamiliesIn 'Attaching in Adoption: Practical Tools for Today's Parents', Deborah Gray is able to translate into the written word the same caring, compassion, and respect that she shows toward both child and parent in her person-to-person contacts. In this book she returns again and again to the importance of both nurturing and structure in working to form close family relationships; the striking part is how well she is able to provide both for parents in the writing of this book. She emotionally nurtures parents while providing clear structure for them in creating a family environment that will promote attachments. In identifying ways to promote attachment, she follows a clear developmental approach, recognizing the needs of children of varying ages and helping parents identify how and where their child might be stuck in earlier stages of development. This is very important aspect of this work; what is necessary at one stage may be inappropriate at another. My favourite chapters of the book, however, are two of the shorter ones. Both fill gaps in the adoption literature for parents. The chapter on 'Trauma and Traumatic Loss' translates the more recent information on the physiologic and psychological effects of trauma, as reported in the professional literature, into material that parents can understand and use in their day to day parenting. The second chapter that I particularly like is the one on 'Building Emotional Intelligence'. In this section, Deborah again takes the material from non-adoption sources and translates it into very practical ideas for adoptive parents to use in helping their child build and maintain healthy friendships. She identifies the gaps that children may have in their skills and provides ideas for remediation. As Deborah points out, "Skill in building and retaining healthy friendships is highly correlated with future happiness in life - much more so than are academic skills."Although this book is primarily written for parents, most professionals in the area of adoption will find a wealth of practical ideas for helping parents be successful in building attachments with their adopted children. Author: Vera I. Fahlberg, M.D., author of A Child's Journey through Placement"This is the most comprehensive work on the subject I have ever enjoyed reading. Deborah's incredible insight from her years of experience with difficult kids shines through in this enlightening book. No stone is left unturned in her effort to give a clear understanding of attachment. This book will be a powerful tool to help families with their children wounded by attachment breaks. My wish would be that every adoptive parent could read this book before beginning their journey."Nancy Thomas, founder of Families by Design, parent trainer, presenter, and author of 'When Love is Not Enough Author: A Guide to Parenting Children with RAD.'"This positive, but realistic book is an important resource for all adoptive families, at any stage of pre and post-adoption. The information on attachment challenges will allow prospective adoptive parents to understand the possible issues of their new children. Those that have adopted will be able to recognize some behaviors of their children and learn methods of parenting that will help all to achieve success. As an adoptive parent and adoption professional, I found the vignettes heart warming and at other times, heart wrenching, but realistic and achievable within a hectic family setting. The clear explanations of the phases allows parents to easily measure where they are, where their children are and how they can improve their parenting and health of entire family. 'Attaching in Adoption' is also a valuable resource for professionals who work with parents. It will assist them to help parents to manoeuvre the sometimes-challenging path of adoptive parenting. Deborah's focus on the health of the family helps to normalize the specialized skills and techniques taught. My husband and I were at wits end with our foster (now adoptive) child. At the age of (just turned) 3, she had purposefully broken 3 windows and our home was alarmed better than Fort Knox because she would continually try to escape at all hours of the day or night. We were exhausted and afraid, because if a 3 year old could do this to us, what would we do with her when she got older? We were completely baffled by her behavior and her reactions to us. And for the record, we have 3 older bios and one younger adoptive who are all well behaved, well adjusted, happy kids. We are good parents. Then during a completely pure chance, business related meeting, I shared with a colleague who was also a foster/adoptive parent what my husband and I were going through. He urgently recommended this book explaining that it had brought his family back from the edge in a similar situation.I bought the book and proceeded to cry through the first half. My daughter finally made sense. Better yet, the author had suggestions that were implementable that day. Because our daughter was still a foster child at the time, the possibility of professional help was, unfortunately, delayed due to bureaucracy. But the book was so clear with practical advice on how to handle different issues you can come across when dealing with attachment issues that we were able to start literally that day with trying to help her. Plus, frankly, being able to just understand why she was acting the way she was, was a godsend. Two months later, when we were finally able to get her into see a behavioral psychologist, I almost felt embarrassed because she had improved so much. The escape behavior was gone, the frantic grabbing had been reduced significantly, the defiance was greatly reduced and constant, demanding need to be the center of attention had relaxed. We still went because we still have a long way to go, but my daughter now comes to me when she is upset and she looks to me for comfort. I feel like she sees me as mom.The recommendations in the book are not easy. They require time and energy... a lot of time and energy. But they work. And when you are at your wit's end and nothing else has worked, the time and energy don't matter.I would recommend this book for anyone who is currently having problems within their adoptive or foster placement. I would not recommend this book for someone in the process of becoming a foster or adoptive parent. Not all children who are placed have attachment issues and some of the stories in the book may cause too much concern for a prospective family. But, know that if you do have issues, this book is here to help.

The reader is so fortunate to have an author who treats an overwhelmingly complex set of topics with such understanding and empathy. Not only will the reader have many “Aha!” moments but they will find themselves repeatedly returning to use this book as a reference.

This book is one that any family should consider reading if they are thinking about adopting a child. The author is extremely qualified and shares many of the ideas you should ponder before adopting.

If you read and reread this book and The Connected Child you will have a good foundation for understanding and building attachment in your adopted or foster child.

BEST BOOK on the subject

Great book. Easy read.

Excellent or practical and easy to follow strategies for working with kids who have suffered trauma and abuse. A must read for those adopting kiddos from a challenging background.

Even though I have not had the opportunity to put into practice the ideas and strategies included in the book, I found it very encouraging and anticipate using it as a helpful reference in the future. I highly recommend this book to adoptive parents or those considering adoption.

Libertarians on the Prairie: Laura Ingalls Wilder, Rose Wilder Lane, and the Making of the Little House Books, by Christine Woodside

Review

"Woodside's contribution to the myriad books and scholarly articles about the dysfunctional relationship between Laura Ingalls Wilder and her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, is the result of four decades of exhaustive research. . . . The more fascinating details for readers are those revolving around the strange yet intense relationship between mother and daughter, fraught with resentments and jealousy, yet ultimately steadfast, and certainly productive." —Booklist"A book for die-hard Little House fans." —Kirkus"Illuminating . . . Iconoclastic . . . Solidly supports the conclusion that the younger woman [Rose Wilder Lane] was the primary mastermind behind the literary classics." —Book Page"Myth-busting . . . Woodside masterfully captures the behind-the-scenes story of two strong-willed women locked in an uneasy, but interdependent, enterprise." —Shoreline Times"New scholarship on Wilder tracks how her books may have been deliberately engineered to fuel the limited-government movement. In a just published work, Libertarians on the Prairie, Christine Woodside fleshes out earlier arguments that Wilder's only child, Rose Wilder Lane, edited the Little House series to reflect her own political leanings." —Boston Globe"Woodside's book also shines light on the political views of Wilder and her secret collaborator that were below the surface of the Little House series." —History Channel"Woodside's book is thoroughly researched and leaves one pondering how the Little House books would be different if Lane didn't have such a hand in her mother's books." —The Post Star"Libertarians on the Prairie is a fascinating expose; of the ideological underpinnings of one of America's best-loved stories. Who knew that the Laura Ingalls Wilder franchise was actually political propaganda?" —Jane Mayer, staff writer, The New Yorker magazine, and author of Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right"This is a beautiful piece of writing. Christine Woodside does an admirable job describing the intense concept of self-reliance which permeated the lives and literature of Wilder and Lane. This book is a must for anyone devoted to the Little House books and their history." —William Anderson, author of Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Biography and The Selected Letters of Laura Ingalls Wilder"The narrative of the Little House books' creation has been a fragmented one until now. Christine Woodside's fresh perspective brings together the pieces of a remarkable literary and cultural history and gives us new insights on the two women who began with a children's story and ended up inspiring a nation." —Wendy McClure, author of The Wilder Life: My Adventures in the Lost World of Little House on the Prairie"Christine Woodside has completely changed my view of the Little House on the Prairie. Her encyclopedic scholarship, meticulous assembly of documentary sources, clear narrative writing style, and frank revelations about Rose's FDR-hating politics credibly demonstrate the connection between the Little House books and the libertarian fantasy of noble and government-free prairie self-sufficiency. Woodside has written the classic history of the classic series." —Mark Kramer, founding director of Nieman Program on Narrative Journalism at Harvard University

This was an interesting read. I knew some of the history of the Ingalls Wilder family, but this really did a nice job of filling in the unknown parts. I really wasn't aware of the extent that Rose played in editing her mother's early books. I knew she had a hand in the process, but it seems she did a whole lot more. She was quite an accomplished author in her own right, but chose to let me mother take the credit for the most part. This book also gave a good picture of the history of our country during this time frame. It was a very different time than what one might think was happening. I did feel that parts were redundant and the story line dragged a bit, but for the most part, it held my interest. Fans of the Little House stories who don't want to have their warm, fuzzy memories of the stories spoiled by the facts should probably pass on this book.

Good read, as a fan of LIW I found the book informative and useful, but I would have enjoyed some photos for the subjects the author spoke of, it would have awesome to see some of the the farm, or the documents she described etc

A thoughtful book about the complex relationship between Laura Ingalls Wilder and her daughter Rose, who collaborated on the Little House books series. It focuses on the very different lives of pioneer mother and city-dweller daughter caught between two worlds.

This gave a very human perspective on the daughter of Laura Ingals Wilder as well as Laura. It just shows, once again, that we are all very flawed human beings, we do the best we can given the times we're born into, our basic personality and our parentage. I thought it was good take on talented, persistent people in two,if not more, generations.

Anytime I see a book with a new slant on Laura, I want to see what is new these many years after her death. The author had a connection with Laura same as me. Most of the material I had read before but the political slant was new. The author or editor needs to remove some of the repetitions.

An interesting book, but I felt the author's analysis was a little weak and not always well-supported. I didn't come away truly feeling strongly either way about the Wilder women and how their Libertarian views impacted the Little House books, but I did learn some interesting tidbits about their mother-daughter relationship and about how much involvement Rose Wilder Lane actually had in writing this iconic series.

This book was very informative about Laura and Almanzo Wilder and their daughter Rose Wilder Lane. I enjoyed learning about Rose's independent spirit. I also enjoyed hearing about the revising of the stories Laura wrote to make the Little House series more suited to children. It was an excellent read.

The author sheds a lot of light on the story behind the Little House on the Prairie series. Absorbing read.

Review

Praise for the First Edition of Discussion as a Way of Teaching Winner of the 1999 Choice Selection of the American Educational Studies Association "Stimulating good discussions is often one of the more difficult tasks of teaching. In this book, Brookfield and Preskill offer a wealth of information and strategies for improving dialogues in the classroom. I found the teacher- and student-centered tone of the book refreshing and the connections drawn between democratic education and discussion methods quite meaningful." --Mary Deane Sorcinelli, associate provost and director, Center for Teaching, University of Massachusetts, Amherst "Discussion as a Way of Teaching addresses an important, often underutilized pedagogical approach—the discussion method. The book is a practical and valuable resource for all faculty seeking to improve their teaching and create more learner-centered teaching environments." --Jodi Levine Laufgraben, director of first-year programs, Temple University "It would be hard for anyone to read this book and not And up with a large number of ideas about how to use discussion in the classroom. Even experienced teachers are likely to be challenged in some of their own assumptions." --David Boud, professor of adult education, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia "This book provides an excellent overview of how to cultivate and nurture democratic dispositions and discussion habits in students. Each chapter provides adaptable, practical, and clearly articulated strategies that both novice and experienced teachers can use." --Gary Cale, associate professor of language and literature, Jackson Community College, Michigan

I've been teaching at the college level for over ten years, and I'm always searching for new ideas to use in the classroom. When I ordered this book, I wasn't sure what to expect since the reviews were mixed; however, I was very pleased with this book. The authors give some really useful and interesting ideas of different techniques and strategies that can be used to promote insightful, prolonged discussions. While I've run across some of the authors' suggestions before (such as using buzz groups or the jigsaw method), most of the suggestions were new and I can certainly see myself using most of the techniques in the classroom in the coming weeks. It is an expensive book, but worth it.

I ordered this book for a class entitled teaching in the church. Theories can be applied to religious training even though written for academia. Examples center around university teaching. The writers are college professors. Writing is clear and the reader may be prompted to use methods in teaching. I can see where professors have used methods in classes I've had. I recommend this book for all teachers in the secular and non secular fields.

The book is more about "why" and much less about "how". I found chapters 4, 5, 11, and 12 reasonably useful. Everything else in the book may be significant from the point of view of educational psychology researcher, but for me it was waste of time.

Outstanding book for making discussion more effective and egalitarian, opening trust, teaching students to respect each other's individual style, learn from each other, etc. I think this is great for teachers: we tend to be great as "talkers' and I'm learning how to bring out ALL of the students in discssion.

This book is true to its title. It describes a philosophy of mutuality between students and teachers, gives a clear case for preparing for discussion as well as techniques for doing the preparation. I found his discussion techniques valuable ways to enhance discussion in a graduate school classroom.

I found this book some years ago when I was looking for adult teaching strategies beyond lecture and discussion. At the time, it was very difficult to find "how-to" books. I didn't need books on the philosophy of education, I needed practical help. That's where this book came in. It gave me ideas I could implement and build on right away and changed the way I teach.I now teach educators at the graduate level and recommend this resource to my students as a good basic book for their libraries. While lecture has it's place--as do books on educational philosophy--this is an excellent "how-to-do-it" resource for those wanting more.

Quality book in fine condition delivered in a timely way. Thanks.

This book gives a lot of techniques and theoretical background on how to democratically use discussion method to faciliate adult teaching
