I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about finding an effective therapy to help someone they love or care for who is on the Autism Spectrum. This book is a careful, thorough and technical description of a compassionate, well researched, and professionally run therapy which involves and empowers parents and carers in the process of helping those they care for to ultimately be able to build their owngenuine relationships. This is something which those on the Autism Spectrum find the most difficult of all! This therapy is not merely about learning good manners or socially appropriate behaviour - but about the lifetime skill of building emotionallyappropriate, fulfilling and genuine personal relationships.

We are just starting RDI with a consultant and this book is clear and easy to understand.

Gutstein presents his RDI theory in this book. So much of what his theory involves makes incredible sense for anyone working with a person (people) with an asd spectrum disorder. This is the most insightful book on autism that I have ever read.

I bought this for work, it is a great book.

The book was good, just did not have all the information I was hoping it did.It came on time, no problems

This book moved me. I have gained so much insight on this subject by reading it. I am inspired to integrate what I've learned into my classroom. It is inspiring and touched me deeply.

Hats off to Dr. Gutstein for his focus on socialization in individuals with autism and Asperger's Syndrome. His "carrot minus the stick" approach in helping people on the autism spectrum perceive benefits in social interaction is an invaluable insight. I like the way he concentrates on building strengths and providing explanations for more severe autism-spectrum behaviors. He uses what appears to me a very reasonable approach. For many people with autism, sequencing or breaking tasks and interactions down into process-friendly steps has proven helpful. He also explains how people by nature crave socialization and that people on the autism spectrum do not have the intuitive social knowledge, such as how long and when to maintain eye contact. To his credit, he does not lapse into a tired "Rain Man" stereotype; instead, he focuses on how to encourage people with autism to develop nonverbal as well as other interpersonal social skills. In just about every case, people with autism learn these behaviors cognitively and often by repeated efforts. This book certainly deserves a place of honor among professionals and families. It is for everybody.

I'm actually revising this review having reread the book and learned more about RDI, as I feel I have a better idea of what the approach is really all about now. My new in-a-nutshell assessment: there are some things I really love about RDI, and some things that I don't care for. To be fair, I would say the same about most treatment approaches. To start with the positive: I think the thing that makes RDI special are what they now call the "Child Goals". There was a time when we thought teaching children with autism to be 'social' meant drilling them on how to say "Hi, my name is ____ what's your name how are you do you want to play", and other such catch phrases that would be fairly useless on a real life, chaotic playground full of it's own hidden codes and rules. The same for abstract thought, imagination, perspective taking. Some things don't translate well to the old "10 trials" format. So a big bravo to RDI for researching this topic and developing goals based around how these skills emerge in typical development. Now for what I see as the core problems in RDI. First, it is all set up around the philosophy that if children feel competent, they will participate (as opposed to ABA, which says if children feel MOTIVATED they will participate.) So if you are trying to do a social activity with an autistic child, and they keep running away trying to go play with light switches or Thomas Tank Engine, RDI says it's because they don't feel competent. Make the situation easier, help them more, slow down, and they will happily engage with you.Nothing wrong with this philosophy, but I'm here to say, I haven't found it to be true. There is actually emerging research to suggest that children with autism may be wired to be 'systemizers' and to pay attention to more mechanical/mathematical type information while lacking typical levels of motivation to attend to social information. If this is the case for a child, you can simplify all you want and the issue isn't that they don't understand, it's that they don't care and you're not creating a reason for them to care. You can be the best teacher in the world but it won't do much for a student who is tuning you out. Second, RDI says that most of the methods used in ABA teaching are Bad with a capital B, and encourage families to really avoid these methods. Again, the problem? A lot of those methods are extremely effective with autistic children, and taking them off the table really limits your teaching tools. This includes methods such as giving the child a direct instruction or asking them a direct question, prompting them to answer or respond, or teaching new material in a very repetitive, predictable way.I think the interesting argument that you get down to here is: when teaching an autistic child, how much should you accommodate a child's autism vs. how much you should try to change it? In my mind, using ABA type methods lean more toward accommodation - teaching in a way that is easier for an autistic child and more in line with their style of learning. RDI methods stress change - you teach more in the way you would expect a neurotypical child to learn and hope they will in turn adapt to this. What I have seen to happen, in my admittedly very limited observation, is that children who are closer to that neurotypical way of thinking do well with RDI, whereas children who are more classically autistic don't seem to get much out of RDI unless it's adapted for them. For the children who have some of those base skills already, RDI can be the push they need into becoming a dynamic thinker. For a child who doesn't attend well to social information, needs to have their interest/motivations incorporated to a large degree, and doesn't learn well outside of highly structured teaching situations, I almost wonder if it's akin to teaching a deaf child with nothing but verbal direction. So my advice? I like the ideas, I do. I would recommend this therapy for high-functioning children with fairly good language and some pre-existing social motivation. For more involved children, I would recommend it as an add-on to other types of therapy such as Floortime or Verbal Behavior, that are more focused on adapting to the child's way of thinking instead of waiting for them to adapt to yours.

My oldest son, who is now 20, started with these books when he was in Middle School and he loved them. That was no shock to me since he loved to read. However, my youngest son, who refuses to read ANYTHING and is now in Middle School-- who won't even read a cereal box -- has suddenly fell in love with this series. He even asked me to order two more books-- which I did. Please let me stress-- my son would not read a dang thing!!!!! And now, is so caught up in these books, he chose to read last night instead of watching TV. INSTEAD OF TV!!!!I hope the Author takes that to heart. That she inspired a 13 year old to read on his own and actually IMAGINE the character and story-- something he has never been able to do before. So for that, this mother thanks you!

These days, life is a mixed bag for Vladimir Tod. On the one hand, his beloved Uncle Otis is staying in Bathory this year, so Vlad will finally have him around when he needs him. Then again, the reason Uncle Otis is hanging around is that the Elysian Council will be trying him for crimes against vampire-kind. And it's not like Uncle Otis isn't guilty. Sure, he committed the crimes to save Vlad from the insanely evil D'Ablo, who wants to steal Vlad's Pravus powers, but vampires aren't that big on mitigating circumstances and Vlad is desperately worried about losing his uncle.School is something else that Vlad is feeling all good news/bad news about. Uncle Otis is teaching mythology, a subject that Vlad, now a Junior, is sure to enjoy. But Vlad has just learned that his former friend Joss - the Joss that nearly killed him with a stake through the back - is moving back to Bathory. That can only mean that Vlad is a target for the Slayer Society. And school also means that Vlad will have to see Meredith Brookstone every day. Breaking up with her to keep her safe from his growing blood hunger was the hardest thing that Vlad has ever done. He's not sure his broken heart can stand the daily reminders of what might have been.In keeping with Vlad's maturity and the growing threats he faces, the fourth book in The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod is darker and grittier than those that have preceded it. As Vlad's destiny moves inexorably toward the prophecy of the Pravus, peril surrounds him at every turn. It seems that everyone Vlad knows and loves is in danger simply because they are important to him and Vlad is struggling with his need to protect them. As he grows into adulthood, Vlad discovers that only he can define 'the right thing to do.' Now he must find a way to do it.

Otis is accused by the Council of acts against vampire-kind. and they are true. what is not true is why. D'Ablo is determined to become the Pravus at any cost. Joss must carry his orders or risk the lives of a town and Glad just wants ....to live

Wow! This was awesome. I have followed the series since the beginning and this sequel does not disappoint. I read the entire thing in about four hours (with frequent pauses near the end so as to draw out the end).Vlad has more problems than your average teen. His former best friend Joss wants to slay him, the former head of the Vampire Council D'Ablo wants to stab him, a new mysterious vampire wants to bite him, Eddie wants to alert the world to his existence, his former girlfriend Meredith wants to know why he was so cruel to her, and his drudge Snow wants to be more than just a delicious cheesburger to him.Heather's ability to keep multiple plot points in the air and still draw out an entire year of Vlad's junior year life is awesome. If you are new the series, buy Eight Grade Bites first and enjoy the ride! If you read the others in the series, don't stop now!

This was a great book. If you wanted to get into a new series and you liked those other popular vampire books than you will love this more.Without giving anything away, its about a 1/2 vampire who is best friends with a vampire slayers cousin, dating the hottest girl in high school, and is sucking the life out of a goth chick whenever he gets hungry. Perfect life Right? Yeah, no... If you can't see where things could go wrong, eh. Throughout the troubles Vlad has made it through 3 books, this being the fourth and the fifth one on its way/out this is a great series for everyone, teens, tweens, my grandma even enjoyed the series (she's a big thriller and all around fantasy kinda person i.e Harry Potter, Twilight, even Percy Jackson). My girlfriend got me into them so yeah they are for everyone, don't be distracted by the "pretty" boy on the cover...Leading into the actual product...Great hardcover book, I own paperback for the first two, and hardcover for this and the third, Hardcover is always better, unless you can't spare that extra 3 bucks, go with hardcover. All in all by this product and if you don't like it, just pass it on because 4 out of 5 people will like it (In my honest opinion)Thanks for reading and ENJOY the product :)Eleventh Grade Burns #4: Chronicles of Vladimir Tod #4

The Vlad Tod series really surprised me. The books get better with time. They are a very fast read that keeps you engaged and wanting more. I'm an avid reader of "vampire teen" books and this series is as the top of a short list. If you've enjoyed other teen vamp series you should really give this one a shot.If I had to give it a grade I would say it's an A-/91%. (I had to grade it. It's the teacher side of me coming through.)

I bought the last 2 in this series for my granddaughter. She was able to read both books in about 3 days, and that counts the days that she goes to school. I have read the beginning of the series and am waiting for her to give me the last 2 books so that I can finish the series. These are great books, not only for teens, but everyone.

This book was bought as a gift. I have never read the series but my son's friend loved it.

I ordered Oberoi's book and read the nearly 500 page account in two straight days. It was so compelling a narrative for someone who grew up in Punjab and grappled with the issues of amorphous identities. The phase in Punjab where "Sikh" terrorists separated "Hindus" from buses and mowed them down was the ultimate (and painful) end-point of the Singh Sabha movement that Oberoi documents. This is because a hundred and fifty years ago it is unlikely that the religious labels in quotes above could be adequately defined and even now, despite everything, religious identities in Punjab remain amorphous.Oberoi documents how a colonial elite in the late 19th and early 20th century carved out a Sikh identity by negating the spectrum of lived religious experiences for the common people for which the distinctions between "Sikh" and "Hindu" were not so easy to define. In other words, religion did not have the separative meaning as it did to the Europeans who provided the framework for this re-imaging. Yet, under pressure from social changes as well as tacit encouragement by the colonial state (particularly the British Army that needed the "Martial Race"), the Singh Sabha and Tat Khalsa managed to create a new religion moulded on the lines of a Semitic faith. The real tragedy, of course, is how so many people who call themselves Sikhs today have internalized this engineering of their panth as a narrow closed "religion" -- intolerant of its inherent diversity and amorphousness that characterized it as an Indic tradition -- so much so that Oberoi was forced to leave the Sikh studies chair at UBC for this work. These neo-Sikhs, as Oberoi calls them, guard this engineered identity (what I would even call a "Christianized Sikhism") as if it is their tradition, while it is this precise attachment to temporal identity that had led Guru Nanak to say -- I am neither Hindu nor Turk. And He would now have to add, nor Sikh.

Harjot Oberoi, along with several other scholars of Sikh studies - including W.H. McLeod, Pashaura Singh, and Gurinder Singh Mann - has been the recipient of much unfair criticism for authoring scholarship that dares to run counter to Sikh tradition.Sikhs desperately need to realize that scholarship is of little value unless it is free to disagree with tradition. The hostility with which scholars of Sikh studies have been greeted every time they deviate from tradition threatens to repel scholars of repute from the area of Sikh studies. Sadly, such a trend is already visible today.Criticism of scholars must be aimed at assessing rather than silencing.Oberoi is perhaps the most articulate Sikh scholar of Sikh studies to emerge in recent times and deserves to be read.In this book, Oberoi makes a potent case for the idea that the boundary between Sikhism and Hinduism was fortified - and in some cases manufactured - during the Singh Sabha period (late 1800s to early 1900s).

This book is a 'must read' for any person who wants to develop accurate insight into Sikh politics of identity. Harjot Oberoi traces the origins of evolving "Sikh" identity giving indisputable historical evidence. This is a very well researched work providing fooproof academic references. The book clearly demonstrates the very idea of separate "Sikh" identity is preposterous, largely derived out of colonial mischief to create schism in collective identity of non-Muslim Punjabis. The important players in this colonial mischief were Tat Khalsa , Singh Sabha and a talented British colonial administrator Macaullife. The reinvention of Sikhism along the lines of an episcopal Greeco-Roman cult was a deliberate ploy of the colonialists to create further fragemtation in the collective Punjabi psyche. The ready takers of this theory was generation of British taught "Sikhs" , who had a political agenda of their own. The tragedy today is that what is inaccurately knows as "Sikh" discourse is largely dictated by a fascist vociferous minority of Singh Sabha variety of neo-Sikhs. This fascist minority of neo-Sikhs uses aggressive proaganda and even threats of violence to scare away all objective and neutral scrutiny of its politically motivated interpretation of Sikh scriptures and historical narrative. The planks of this fascist and violent Singh Sabha variety of neo-Sikh minority are ironically drawn from a Marxist grand narrative about the evolution of Indic spiritual and social traditions.Harjot Oberoi has had to face unnecessary persecution and threats of violence from this fascist neo-Sikh minority which wants to gag all voices that question its politically motivated supremacist expropriation of the entire of Sikh tradition.Scholars like Harjot Oberoi are few and far between when it comes to the world of Sikh Studies. His work needs to be commended and given full recognition, especially given the fact he is a possible target of violence from the very same fascist neo-Sikh minority which also decorates the pictures of dreaded terrorists and extermists in the Sikh temples in the West. This book should be a compulsory reading in all of the university curricula dealing with Sikh studies. This book also provides insightful clues about the problem of worldwide ethno-religious terrorism. Harjot Oberoi demarcates the typologies and taxonomies of the "Sikh" politics of identity of late 19th and early 20th centuries which later led to "Sikh" terrorists commit heinous and dastardly murders in Punjab in 1980s. Harjot Oberoi lays bare the ideological provenance of this malevolent movement that almost caused another holocaust in Punjab after the one in 1947.

There is a good deal of scholarship to admire in this work. However, other reviewers are correct to note that there are gaps in the historical presentation (notably on Sikh culture). Read this with the potential for bias in mind, and this can provide the basis for useful dialogue.

If one really wants to understand how a "scholar" distorts, misinterprets and ignores the facts then this book is a must buy. The author has intentionally turned his back on the abundance of literature on Sikh history and old historic accounts and rather chose to write his baseless assertions without any facts. This book hardly gives any factual information about Sikhism. It is one thing to disagree with tradition but another to question it without presenting any credible evidence. Author's opinions cannot be considered historic facts when no solid evidence is presented. I would suggest saving time and money by staying away from this garbage of lies. This book has been refuted by many Sikh scholars in "Invasion of Religious Boundaries".[...]

From Publishers Weekly

Management consultant and venture capitalist Cohan (Export Now: Five Keys to Entering New Markets) tries to even the formidable odds facing fledgling entrepreneurs, advising readers to examine with a strategic eye their chosen field of competition and thus avoid the errors that can doom a business from the start. Not just preaching to the choir, he shows how this has been accomplished by such entrepreneurs as BrewDog’s cofounder James Watt and T2 Biosystems’ CEO Joe McDonough. He also shares their accumulated expertise on such essentials as setting short-terms goals, picking the right field, raising funds, and building a team. While some figures and diagrams appear throughout the book, Cohan’s writing remains remarkably free of the consultant buzzwords and charts that can make works of this type not only challenging but unhelpful. Instead, Cohan delivers his advice in a no-nonsense, direct manner that readers will appreciate. He also explores the challenges of satisfying customers, remaining open to change, and meeting capital providers’ demands. Entrepreneurs hungry for success will welcome Cohan’s guidance on gaining the edge necessary to compete and thrive in business.

Review

“Peter Cohan has created a logic of competitive strategy that speaks to the real challenges of entrepreneurs trying to create new organizations that are more likely to succeed.”—Leonard A. Schlesinger, President, Babson College “I can say unequivocally that the Hungry Start-up Strategy tips work! Thank you, Peter, for guiding us to a business model that supports our social mission.”—Carol Barash, PhD, founder and CEO, Story to College“A guide that will help the entrepreneur sort the urgent from the important and navigate the choppy waters of an early-stage venture.”—Howard Stevenson, Sarofim-Rock Professor of Business Administration, Emeritus, Harvard Business School“Cohan distills his expertise into a stunningly helpful and immensely practical book filled with a variety of tools that any entrepreneur will find instantly illuminating and useful.”—John Harthorne, founder and CEO, MassChallenge, Inc. If the HBS strategy paradigm is of diminishing relevance to the new venture and therefore a growing share of the economy, what is the replacement? Peter Cohan provides his answer to this question in Hungry Start-up Strategy. While HBS’s Porter advocates a highly structured, even dispassionate approach to an already established business, Mr. Cohan promotes personal passion and customer connection to creating the business. His focus is on the “six key start-up choices—setting goals, picking markets, raising capital, building teams, gaining market share, and adapting to change.” By my own research, advisory experience, and entrepreneurial involvements, I have gained first person insight into the veracity of the very premise of the Hungry Start-up Strategy. Congruent with the style he advocates, Peter Cohan’s book is pragmatic and personalized, more compressed than comprehensive, sufficiently succinct that the would-be entrepreneur can read and digest it in an afternoon, then pull an all nighter crafting the strategy to launch the hungry start-up. -- New York Journal of Books
