This book by George Mahood is amusing and informative. He and his new wife of a year travel through South America on a delayed honeymoon. Many of their adventures are precipitated by his disinclination to spending money. Saving $3.00 on a tour in the Pampas means hunting for anacondas in flip flops and sneakers with a flapping sole. Purchasing street food in the form of rice the consistency of concrete leads to severe abdominal distress. They usually stay in hostels and when they actually opt to stay in a fancier hotel find themselves in a room with a poorly covered window that looks out on the dining room-with the diners looking in on them--reinforcing George's miserly tendencies. While amusing, the descriptions of the various sites they visit in Bolivia, Peru, and Chile (among others) are interesting and informative. He is sensitive to the cultures and reports the things that happen due to cultural differences with a sensitivity that displays his understanding of the differences. He makes you laugh but does not belittle the other culture. If you love a good chuckle and enjoy reading about the travels of another this book is for you. Highly recommended.
Two of my favorite authors are George Mahood and Tony Slater. Each writes travel books which are not actually travel books. They are little tidbits of their lives while traveling. The books are, for the most part, hilarious and are a total pleasure to read. Not only are they two excellent writers, they are very approachable everyday people who have Facebook pages and will actually answer your e-mails when you pretend you have meaningful questions for them but just want to know if they will answer. I had a time line of Mahood’s books incorrect and placed a post on Tony Slater’s Facebook page saying that I was reading Travels with Rachel after his last book Not Tonight Josephine, and was glad to see that he and Rachel got married not realizing that it was three beautiful kids later that the book was published. George and Rachel politely kidded an answer on Tony’s site and then I found the Mahood’s Facebook page and was slightly embarrassed. Travels With Rachel is my favorite so far with the Anaconda story alone worth the price of the book. The descriptions of the highlights of the countries George and Rachel visited in South America are wonderful. If you have any sense of wanting to read books with a whimsical sense of humor with a great eye for the non-obvious, I highly recommend these two guys. They don't write as a team, they each have their own separate books but they are friends. I hope they don't mind my lumping my review between the both of them.
I've read several of George Mahood's book and have consistently found them to be highly entertaining reads and extremely humorous, often in the vein of some of Bill Byron's travelogues. "Travels With Rachel" documents a six week long trip that George took with his wife Rachel to three countries in South America (Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia). Along the way they meet various colorful characters -- anyone who travels can relate to the mix of people that you meet when traveling abroad. Having never traveled to South America, I learned a lot about the different countries and cultures. The author's style is very funny and easy to read -- I highly recommend all of his books.
This came at the perfect time - it was my Christmas break read. I snuggled in and happily enjoyed laughing my way through George and Rachel's adventures. Fun mix of travel facts and wry observations about everything that went right and wrong with their trip. I especially liked his very British take on Machu Picchu (for those of us here in the Americas 600 years old seems very old... but you may have a point). I started reading his books with a chance discovery of "Every Day is a Holiday," and have now read them all. Very witty and fun.
This is the 3rd book I've read by George Mahood and as with the prior two, found it to be quite easy to read and very enjoyable. Unlike many other travel writers, who insist on boring the crap out of the readers by feeling the need to give us a history lesson. George mainly sticks with the fun aspects of his trips and focuses more on the interactions between the main characters in addition to the interesting people he meets on his journeys. While he does provide some good, basic information on the places he visits, it is not overdone and I for one, appreciate that. So, spend a few hours with George and his better half, Rachel, on their journey to what must have been one Hell of a honeymoon In South America.
Anyone who has traveled independently in foreign lands will relate to the adventures encountered by George and Rachel as they backpacked through South America. Death-defying bus rides, unidentifiable (or worse, definitely identifiable) foods, uncomfortable lodgings, oddball fellow travelers, language misunderstandings and plans gone awry are all part of the experience. Mahood relates their adventures and misadventures with interesting detail, an engaging style of writing and self-deprecating wit.
If you are looking for a really fun book, then buy this one. If you are planning to travel to South America then buy this one. This book is seriously funny and is also seriously full of South American travel advice for first time visitors, like it might not be a good idea to book the cheapest Anaconda hunting tour just to save three dollars. If I was filthy rich, I would gladly pay for George and Rachel's next adventure just so I could read about it in the next book. (Fortunately I am not filthy rich, but I still can't wait to read the next book! )
I love Mr. Mahood's sense of humor. I think he writes well and he or someone is a good proofreader, of which I approve. The book is interesting, entertaining and I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it to everyone. As a brief synopsis, it is about his and his wife's honeymoon in South America, not what I think the typical honeymoon would be like. They covered Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
