One of the best books for Conservative Lutherans.

Arrived promptly. I am reading it now and like what I have read so far.

God has truly blessed the church with believers such as Harrison who live what they write about. Harrison shares his experiences with the Canadian native Indians to a chaotic inner city neighborhood in Indiana to tsunami ravaged Indonesia, each of them God's mercy in theology of the cross was made clearly known to Harrison and the community around.He shares his growing passion for mercy outreach through Christ's church, which is somewhat fresh and new for Lutherans, but shouldn't be. It just was that this had diminshed among us, and is now being resurrected and taking off thanks to the blessings of Harrison and others.The motivation for mercy ministry is hereby not admonished via programs or inspiration stories or guilt trips or promised growth, but on solid basis of the Gospel of Christ. The author is well versed in both the Scripture and church history he offers, seasoned well with his own experiences which makes for great reading.Adding to all of this are some great B&W photos and a nice Bible Study attached. A truly fine resource for this historically neglected work of Christ among us which is making a needed resurrgence.

From its earliest pages, this book commends itself to be a uniquely inspiring work. In the opening sentence of the Foreward, Rev. Ray S. Wilke writes: "I have waited thirty-eight years for this book to be published" -- not because Harrison is such a slow writer but because Wilke had not seen such an unfolding of the Gospel even during his pastoral training at the seminary in the 1960's, the decade of Harrison's birth.As far as Harrison is concerned, this book couldn't have been written any sooner. First he had to cut his teeth piloting with missionaries in northern Canada, initiating neighborhood renewal in center-city Fort Wayne and traveling around the world as the Executive Director of Human Care for The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS), bringing relief to people in diverse cultures and desperate situations. He had to learn that the theology he studied in his early years truly addressed the human condition, seeing how mercy meets misery.Harrison leads readers in short order from rural Iowa to urban Kenya, from recent anecdotes to ancient history -- and from the visceral to the cerebral. He serves as an expert tour guide who has personal knowledge of the cares and concerns weighing heavily on people in the places he has served and visited. One can easily tell that these pages were not composed by some half-baked wannabe media preacher, but by a well-seasoned pastor who has learned in the theology of the cross what it means to "Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep," (Rom. 12:15).The subtitle of the book, "How to Put Your Faith Into Action," is a bit misleading. Readers will be delighted to find out that Harrison's work is not another "how to" do-it-yourself manual. He neither attempts to manipulate readers with guilt nor challenge them to rely upon their own gumption to aspire to a religious life. Time and again, Harrison demonstrates how people are enlivened by the grace, mercy and peace of God in Christ -- through the means which Christ instituted.Indirectly, readers will also be introduced to what it is about the Lutheran confession of faith which is unique -- not just another denomination to be blended into a generic religious melting pot. Harrison unabashedly lays out the specific details about how Holy Baptism, Holy Absolution, Holy Communion, and the Holy Scriptures provide mercy far beyond what bread and medicine could ever hope to provide, but also subsequently provisioning bread and medicine under the shadow of Christ's wings.This book doesn't just deserve to be read. It deserves to be read more than once -- and to serve as a salutary reference for life in the mercy of Christ.

This book is really all about what God does and had done for us in Jesus Christ. It always begins at the cross with what Christ has done for us and then shows how that should and does impact how we live and how we show mercy to others as it has been shown to us. I have truly enjoyed this and recommend it to anyone who is looking for a book that helps them to understand Christian living without giving them a whole list of rules to follow. This is Gospel living.

This is such an easy read and is so practical. It is a blessing to have helpful tools like these for called church workers and laity alike.

Easy to read, practical and gives a good overview of all of the compensation landscape in a thorough and also comprehensive way.Although the authors and contributors do not name specific companies, experienced professionals will be able to discern some of the main consulting companies that provide this service.It is an easy read and even beginners will be able to skip chapters and still understand the concepts to apply them to your work immediately.

The book is very detailed. My only issue is the topics are not as organized as I thought it should be, but it's still a great book.

This is a great textbook on working a room. On this particular subject it may be even THE ultimate textbook. Susan RoAne covered everything from exhibits via high school reunions to funeral services. Wow, what a tremendous experience! Susan was on schedule for more meetings than I changed diapers (and changed a lot of them).But this is not some boring textbook which can substitute for a soothing lullaby. Not at all. This book is packed with both fun and interesting stories. Most of them came directly from Susan’s rich array of experiences. That makes the book far from the dreadful image of a textbook.First some areas where it may have fell short for some users. As a representative of a (relatively) young generation I found her explanations of different social platforms boring. I skimmed through these and went straight to more “meaty” parts. But someone in his sixties may feel exactly opposite.I also find the book a bit repetitive, but I’m not the kind of guy who shun from repetition. It helps to retain the lessons longer.Connecting is hard, but she makes it easySusan also writes vividly. When she admits that mingling and talking to strangers is hard, I wholeheartedly agree with her. I was a shrinking violet who transformed into a confident person, so I went through quite a lot. 30 months ago I couldn’t say “Hi” to a stranger.When Susan explains how to make it happen, it sounds fun and easy. I vote for her methods. I verified everything she teaches; every trick from her arsenal, which I knew and used worked as she prescribed. And I got some interesting results too. Since “shrinking violet” times I built a couple of deep friendships by starting conversations on a train to work. I also spoke with strangers about life-death issues.Working a room masteryBut it was just the introductory part of the book. From there the author goes into room-working and that’s where her mastery really shows. She has a knack for breaking high plane ideas into actionable items. Susan has also a tendency to make a list whenever possible. There are an enormous number of lists and action steps included. And after each chapter you will find a quick summary, again in bullet points or the form of list, which makes for easy reading.It’s really amazing how she was able to systematize and distill such intangible topic as human relationships.Her ideas comes down to common sense. You won’t find there any backbreaking manipulation techniques which can be mastered only by years of training. I appreciate that because of the following reasons: Common sense is nowadays uncommon I don’t really know what common sense calls for in many situations; for example I have never been on reunion or a trade show.I loved Susan’s advice on working virtual rooms. I’m not too bad in working them myself. I’ve been noticed by several people with 6 and 7 figure income businesses and obtained their help. I recognized in her advice my approach: just be genuine.Not one-read kind of a bookI’m sure I’ll be going back to How to Work a Room time after time. The structure of book makes it easy to find just a particular kind of “room” and refresh the lesson in your mind. Now, before any new event I’ll take this book and skim an appropriate chapter.If you are thinking about any career involving face- to-face contact with people (and most of careers demands at least basic social skills) How to Work a Room is a must read.

Gets repetitive. After page 25, I got it, I got it. OK, I'm good. No really.

The 25th Anniversary edition of this book continues to be classic. Susan RoAne describes straight forward but often underutilized social graces that can be used to increase business and networking opportunities. How to Work a Room provides necessary tools that can be used in all social settings to meet the demands of having conversations in uncomfortable situations. The book gives helpful hints to get through the initial stages of the process. The chapters are laid out in an instructional and informational style with excellent examples and stories to support its thesis. This belongs on everyone’s top 10 books to read this year. This book was suggested to me as someone who has struggled with shyness. Never cared much for these types of books and I will honestly say only about half of it was applicable to me. But the parts that I could connect with where good. A lot was pretty common sense based but I actually used some of the tips and found them helpful so I recommend this to anyone looking for a little help in the "being social" department

As an introvert who has struggled in the networking scene, I love this book! It gives great practical advice for conversation, manners and has been updated to include social media tips.

The best by a mile.Anyone familiar with Explorer's Guides to Maine or Vermont knows what kind of quality to expect here, but there's a catch. This particular guide IS getting a bit out of date.Here's the thing. New Hampshire is all about heritage tourism and outdoor exploration. Those things change very little over time, so the guide still has validity despite its age. Don't expect pricing and timing information to be up to date, but recommendations are still spot on. Historical and cultural contexts are still informative and entertaining.Despite a bit of age and a lack of flashy color photography, this is your best guide to the Granite State.

In some respects, New Hampshire has it all ways. Close enough to the I-95 corridor to be in range of Boston and readily accessible to travelers, but with a surprisingly vast hinterland of forests, lakes, mountains, and small towns, all likely to be interesting to the visitor willing to explore. This Explorer's Guide to New Hampshire is just the thing to find your way around the state. The contents are a very readable mixture of traditional travel narrative and the organized information bites that modern travelers have come to expect. The four seasons of the state accommodate a variety of outdoor recreation and New Hampshire's colonial past and vibrant present. Authors Christina Tree and Christina Hamm have done their homework. This is a great guide to a wonderful state.The contents are organized by region: the Seacoast, the Merrimack Valley, the Monadnock Region, the Connecticut River Valley, the Lakes region, the White Mountains, and the Great North Woods. Each chapter has an introduction and listings to what to see and where to stay and to eat. The text is sprinkled with black and white photographs and maps. This is a hefty guide at over 500 pages, worth studying in close detail prior to a visit, and a handy reference while on the road. Recommended.

Clear, easy to read, and well organized, like all of Christina Tree's Explorer's Guides. It would be great if an update could be made to the restaurants and inns, but the book is valuable as is. So much simpler taking this tome along on the trip than spending hours drifting on the web.

Best travel guide I have ever read. I liked it so much that I just ordered the Explorer's Guides to Maine and Vermont. The book has everyhing about New Hampshire: history, food, antique stores, farmers' markets, establishment hours, lodging, scenic drives, places off the beaten path, et al. I am hoping that my Vermont and Maine guides measure up because Ms Tree and Hamm have set a pretty high bar with this one. I will be visiting New Hampshire this fall for the foliage viewing and I am well versed in what New Hampshire has to offer. Well done!

I chose this book as I am considering making a move, not just taking a vacation. It gives me a sense of the variety of landscapes in New Hampshire. Until I find a book that is called, "Where to move to in New Hampshire", this is a good reference. It'a a start.

Good, useful guide. Plenty to do here, and this points the way. Flip through it and refer to it throughout the year . . . Sometimes we learn things about our region and this is a good tool.

Good guide. Got us to the main sights as never visited NH before. Highly recommend.
