I am a mathematics instructor trying to change my career to become an actuary. I bought this book to study the derivatives portion of exam fm.pros:a), Easy to follow, intuitive.b), It does not rely much on mathematics, so it is good for people who are not strong in math.c), paper back version is very reasonablecons:a), There are no answers in this book for any of the problems provided (Note: solution manual is available)b), It's a huge book. Especially considering that for exam fm takers, only 4, or 5 chapters is all what is required.Opinion:I did not give 5 stars simply because of the hassle of having to get the solution set separately, which only has even solutions. So if you like books that explains to you all the mathematical solutions, you might be disappointed. But as I mentioned, it is not designed to educate mathematicians; it's for beginners in finance and I find the explanation intuitive, easy to follow and thorough. Since I am eventually going to become an actuary, it is likely that I will end up reading everything, too. In summary, I am sure it is worth getting this book for it's price. (around $40 for paperback)
This book is totally different than the 3rd edition hard cover. So different that I found myself scrambling to buy the hard cover after realizing that none of my homework questions were in the book. The chapters aren't even sequenced the same. Also, it's just a very dry book compared to the hardcover, less example problems, less graphic illustrations, just not as good. The hardcover is a really good book though, considerably more expensive but worth it.
This is not a cheap substitute for the hardcover. The chapters and pages are completely different from the actual book that Pearson sells. If you are studying for exam FM, I would recommend not wasting your $30 on this and just go for the hardcover. I made the mistake of trying to use this book and found it to be very frustrating. For what it's worth, there was a sticker on the bottom of the back cover. I peeled it off to find the sentence, "This edition is manufactured in India and is authorized for sale only in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives." Take it for what you will but this was clearly covered with intent.
Its a very clear and concise book. Its a Great tool for people who are Not Finance majors, its easy to understand.
Received was not hard cover but paperback.Paperback looks like an international version i.e, UK, reproduced in India.Chapters do not match student solutions manual.Sending back for a refund.
This textbook goes very in-depth into every topic. Sometimes, I felt like it went too far into detail and lost sight of the bigger picture. This book was sufficient for me to pass Exam MFE (obviously with Coaching Actuaries ADAPT on top of it)
Item not be sold in US. For people who just need it for their own purpose. I don't know the legality of the purchase though!
Very nice text on introductory financial topics for people who has never interact with instruments such as swap contracts.
