The National Portrait Gallery is a London museum near Trafalgar Square, which is home to thousands of portraits, with only a percentage on display at any one time. It's a wonderful place to visit, and in addition to the permanent displays of works of art, there are frequent special programs on individuals or groups important in British history. Author Simon Schama, in his new book, "The Face of Britain: A History of the Nation Through Its Portraits", is a wonderful look at selected works of art and he tells the stories of the people in the pictures. His are not conventional biographies, but rather short examinations of the influence of society on the subject and the influence by the subject on British society. Oh, and "portraits" can be done by paint, photography, or sculpture. All of the 35 or so sections are strong, but maybe the most interesting are the section on how photographer Yousef Karsh snapped his famous picture of Winston Churchill, glowering at the camera and the poor family of George III.Taken in Ottawa, Canada during a state visit in 1941, Churchill had just addressed the Canadian Parliament and was in no mood to have his picture taken. Karsh was in the ante-room with him and asked Churchill to put the cigar he was smoking in an ashtray. When Churchill wouldn't do it, Karsh marched over to the Prime Minister and snatched the cigar out of his mouth. The resulting picture of a mad Churchill became an iconic image of the man.Schama writes about George III and his son, the Prince of Wales, the future George IV. The prince, one of 15 children of George III and his wife, Charlotte, lived a desalute life with mistresses and illegitimate children. Father and son, constantly at odds, are represented in the Portrait Gallery with a series of portraits.Another beautifully done section is titled "The Faceless of Britain". These were the Great War soldiers hideously disfigured as a result of battle wounds. Schama writes how doctors and and artists worked together to give these "faceless" some semblance of features. Taking one soldier, Private Walter Ashworth, Schama takes the reader through the surgeries needed to give this man a face and a future.Simon Schama's book is like a series of short stories about some of the lives behind the faces in the portraits. It's a marvelous book. I have the Kindle copy and while there are pictures with the text, there are some pictures written about that aren't shown. But I think they'd be available on the National Portrait Gallery's website.

Superb in every way. Even if you have not visited the National Portrait Gallery, this trip through it is as revelatory of history as it is of art. Th writing is an unadulterated joy in its elegance and its occasional straight from the hip colloquialisms. This is much more than a coffee table book; it is one that can be read and reread endlessly. A treasure

Schama's writing style is idiosyncratic, and neatly reflects the people of the portraits and their loves, tragedies, and complexities, with a distinctive quirkiness that can be droll, jazzy, sly, or sympathetic. He's never dry, always vivid, and not condescending. As an American, one not hugely familiar with all aspects of British history, there were many new characters to meet, and to study in the future. The anecdotes about Winston Churchill are likely to be the most quotable, but the final chapter ("The Faceless of Britain") is devastating - the intertwined story of Private Water Ashworth, surgeon Harold Gillies, and artist Henry Tonks is unlikely to be forgotten by anyone who reads it.

Super enjoyable, essayistic look at British history through its portraits. I don't love Schama, but this will be a fun read for lovers of history, anglophiles and even art history buffs. Good stuff.

Schama's books are rarely less than stimulating and always instructive. He uses portraiture, whether painted or photographed, as a basis for delving into British history. While some of the chapters are more interesting than others, as a whole, the book was worth every minute I spent reading it.

Read the first chapter and was completely addicted

Lisa Genova, the author of Still Alice, has done it again. She has taken a every serious medical issue, combined it with a believable, intelligent main character and created an informative, realistic and hopeful story. I had never heard of Left Neglect until reading this story. Sarah, our main character seems to have everything she wants, a high powered job, a loving husband, three children, a beautiful home and an unending schedule, on which she seems to thrive. Genova describes beautifully, what that life is like. Sarah's life is a whirlwind of "must dos". She revels in the fact that she can do it all, although sometimes her subconscious is telling her otherwise. This life abruptly changes when Sarah is involved in an automobile accident that leaves her with frontal lobe brain damage. While she survives the crash and is physically recovering, her brain no longer recognizes the left side of her body. Genova takes us through Sarah's responses beginning with denial that anything is wrong, through realization of her situation and on to adjustments that alter her life and, in the process bring her a new happiness. A side story of particular interest is her relationship with her mother. We learn that Sarah lost her brother in a drowning accident when they were children and that her mother was never the same after that. Sarah felt abandoned and alone and as she grew and married, she lost touch with her mother in every real sense. Following the accident, her mother comes back into her life, offering help. We can see ourselves in Lisa's characters. We can feel the emotions and the disappointments and we can only hope that we can rise above our challenges, much as Sarah does in this book.

This book was recommended by my neurologist. I suffer from left neglect due to a recent stroke, but didn't understand it.. The author is a hoot. She can take a subject that's so serious and make it so relatable.By the middle, I was thanking my lucky stars that I didn't experience anything as severe as the subject of this book did. I didn't read Still Alice, another of this author's novels, but I saw the film. The author is doing a great service by writing about these neurological conditions in such a human way. By the end, I understood left neglect do much better than I have from just reading medical websites, or having therapists who haven't experienced it tell me about it.Highly recommended.

Negatives: The beginning was pretty slow for me (though that may be partially because I was reading too many books at the same time). Once the book did pick up, I still had a hard time getting into it because I'm a bit squeamish. Some of the recovery details were vividly described and I just had a hard time reading a lot of chapters at a time.Positives: I learned a ton about a condition I didn't even know existed and once I got about 40% of the way through I couldn't put it down. Also, it was so inspirational and in the end was more about perseverance and family than the actual tragedy. I loved all the family dynamics; they felt real and very nuanced. Sarah felt genuine with all her varied and conflicting emotions; she's proud of her success but feels guilty for the time it takes away from her family. I can relate to that, even if I don't actually have kids yet. Sarah and Bob's relationship was strong but they had their own issues throughout. The deep-seated turmoil between Sarah and her mom was probably what I connected to most and I thought it was well done. I guess my point is that this wasn't just a dry medical story to teach us about a relatively unknown condition: we get to truly see how a person with this condition would experience life.

I wanted to love this boo but it just didn't happen. As someone with left neglect, although not as bad as the book's main character, I would say that the portrayal is unrealistic.Firstly, Sarah must have been in the worst rehab hospital in the country. When I was in rehad they had an alarm on my bed and on my wheelchair to make sure I didn't get up without professional supervision. Even using the bathroom required someone to go with me, door open. Sometimes this was a man, which was embarrassing, but hey, there is no privacy when you're in the hospital. When I started walking, my therapist always used a support belt on me until they were sure I was stable enough to walk on my own. I NEVER fell down. They NEVER let me walk into things. THey NEVER left me alone in the therapy room/gym.Also, why wasn't her head bandaged after surgery? The test they gave her to see if she was blind would not have proved that she wasn't blind to the left (left homonymous hemianopsia, which I have). In either case, the finger would have disappeared as soon as it went to the left of the midpoint. Why didn't she complain or mention the extreme pain after brain surgery? I had a brain hemorrhage which is probably not as painful as being in a car crash since you would probably have other injuries. Brain surgery is the most painful thing I can even imagine, and I really try not to remember it. But I did have a double crainiotomy so maybe mine was more painful than average. She doesn't mention running into walls, doors, people, whatever except at the beginning. This is something I deal with everyday. When she lost Linus, she was able to "run" down the sidewalk without running into anyone, something I can't imagine. She is also able to scan to the left with a lot more success than I have. It's very hard to remember to do something when you've forgotten about it pretty much by definition. She also never mentions that your brain makes up excuses for how things make sense without the left side. This is almost impossible to fight since it's your own brain so you naturally believe it.I'm giving it two stars (instead of one) because it at least addresses this disability which few people know about.

This was just phenomenal - everything I want in an epic fantasy. I was particularly delighted with the rich world-building, swoony romance, and matter-of-fact diversity in the characters' race, class, sexuality, etc.

The Afterward gleefully delves into the mostly untapped time frame of what happens AFTER the big quest (just as the title indicates), delivering humor, friendship, adventure, and (most importantly) a love story. The world would be a better place if we had more books like this in it. This book is perfect for those who love high fantasy but who always wanted to be able to see themselves in the story too.

So......I'm going to preface this by saying that I'm super torn on this one, because representation matters! and what this book is trying to do is so important, and I value that so much, but in the end, it's still a book, and I feel like it was trying too hard, so hard in fact, that the story got a little lost in the trying. It's somewhat of a little bit of a jumbly mess of transgender representation, LGBTQ+ representation, a F/F love story representation, that the world building, magic building and plot just kind of got lost in the love story. Kalanthe Ironheart and Olsa Rhettsdaughter are in love. But Kalanthe Ironheart has to pay off her knight contract, or something like that, because, of something?, and the dual timeline of some quest they went on to destroy the old god (they're heroes of the realm, did you know that?), while simultaneously switching back to current day Kalanthe trying to find a husband to satisfy her knight debt while Olsa is running around being thief of the realm and the godsgem isn't done with these heroes yet..... it's all pretty confusing. It's not a bad read, it has moments of cuteness, and the story ends up tied up with a neat little finished bow of happiness for everyone, but I just feel like in trying to be a book of representation, the story got lost. The story should be the main point, and if someone happens to be something, all the better, let it flow with the story line. It doesn't have to jump screaming off the page every single chapter because then it becomes patronizing instead of representative. Just my two cents.

This book is probably one of my favorite fantasies I've read in recent times. It was filled with an originality and freshness that I'm not likely forget for sometime. In this story you meet a thief, with no way to make a living and a knight, who's heart is raging against what's right and true. Both of them need each other and both are equally compelling characters to follow as they stubble their way toward and away from each other. I really liked the way the story was told, all the while the plot went on there's this hole in the readers heart missing the adventure that happened before. While, we do get that story told, it's so nostalgically written that I didn't always feel like I was getting the whole story. It was oddly compelling. At the heart of the story was the relationship between the two main characters that I simply couldn't get enough of, I'm a huge fan of E.K Johnson and this read truly was amazing.

Title: The AfterwardAuthor: E.K. JohnstonAge Group: Teen/Young AdultGenre: FantasySeries: StandaloneStar Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars I borrowed this book from my local library and reviewed it. E.K. Johnston is one of my favorite authors, so when I heard that she was writing a brand-new book coming out in February, I ordered it from my local library. After I finished Archenemies, I pushed it right to the top of my stack; I renewed it once and didn’t want to have to return it without reading it. And this book… It’s probably one of the most unique in her entire body of work. It is an adventure story, told from two points in time and three points of view. It was full of brave, courageous female knights, a just queen, forbidden love, thievery, magic and mayhem, and I really enjoyed it! It wasn’t entirely perfect, but it is easily one of my favorite books of 2019. I’m almost wishing that it was a series, waiting for a sequel, so I don’t have to say goodbye to all the friends I’ve made! A group of female knights set out at the behest of a young prince, in hopes of eradicating an ancient, untold evil. After defeating the Old God and stopping his tyranny from spreading across the world, they return to their old lives. But the girls, save their leader, Sir Erris, are having troubles readjusting, particularly Kalanthe Ironheart, a knight-in-training burdened by debts and doubts and the futility of her future, and Olsa Rhetsdaughter, a ne’er do well thief who longs for freedom, in every sense of the world. But it turns out that even though they’ve finished their epic quest, other problems arise, and this time, it’s possible that more than hearts will be broken… I really enjoyed this book! I loved the way that it took the classic adventure trope and turned it on its head. I also really liked the format, and the way that the book went back and forth between the before, during the actual quest, and the after, where the women had to deal with the aftermath. This book has everything that I love in a fantasy novel: tough girls who take no prisoners and are strong and feminine at the same time, forbidden love, magic, war, (lady) knights, and strong friendships! It was a wonderful novel. The pacing was breakneck, and I loved the way that the different times were shown. I also adored Kalanthe and Osla’s distinct, authentic voices, and the way the narration was made more interesting by both of their perspectives. I’m also such a sucker for a good love story, and this book delivered several times over on that score! I loved the ending, too. The only thing that really bothered me was that several of the side characters weren’t sketched out very well, and there were so many to keep track of that I wish there had been a dramatis personae at the front of the book. It also got confusing when the time periods switched; but after rereading some passages, it got easier. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed The Afterward; it’s probably my favorite book in Johnston’s extensive body of work. Easily one of my favorite books of 2019! The bottom line: Rich, enchanting, funny and heartfelt, I loved The Afterward! Next on deck: Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid!
