But beyond that, the crises in 1987 (black Monday), 1998 (demise of Long-Term Capital Management), and 2007-2008 (mortgage credit crisis) were fed by: unwitting reliance on obscure mathematical models with unadvertised limitations; absence of transparency by financial institutions offering questionable products; false illusions of investor safety which allowed risky leveraging (investment with borrowed money); and also, in some cases, conflicts of interest. Readers of this book may range from people interested in financial markets (e.g. casual Wall Street Journal readers), to individual investors, portfolio and estate managers, even to investment firm managers who did not fully understand the mechanics of mortgage securitizations, the unfolding of which lead to a great recession in 2008-2009. A magnificent book about an even more magnificent individual! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, every single page. Don't let the age of the writing dissuade you. As a fan of European history, I kept coming across Talleyrand's name in books covering the late 1700s and early 1800s. I decided it was time to learn about the man himself and am so pleased I found this book thanks to Amazon. He was arguably the most dominant individual in France during this time and certainly was able to succeed for a much longer period than anyone else. Now I just need to find an equally well-written book about Metternich ... if it exists. As for Talleyrand, do yourself a favor and read this book!

The conventional portrait of Talleyrand is one of a corrupt, amoral political turncoat who successfully negotiated every change in French government from Louis XVI to Louis Philippe. He may have been self-absorbed and he did enrich himself at every turn but Duff Cooper maintains that he was a man of principle whose political gymnastics were always motivated by what was in the best interest of the French nation. Agree with him or not, Cooper makes a compelling case and he writes beautifully.

Talleyrand was an extraodinary man—charming and smart and impossible. Duff Cooper writes beautifully and I came away from this biography in awe of the subject and very appreciative of the author. It is so much better than many of today’s biographies which often want to be definitive and think that the way to do that is to be exhaustive. This book gives you a sense of Talleyrand’s genius and complexity. An excellent read.

This very charitable memoir requires the reader to have a good understanding of the history of revolutionary and post-revolutionary France. The prose is quite striking and the subject would approve of its quick flourishes and decisive wit.

This book explained the ideas and wisdom of Talleyrand, overcoming some of my indignation that he would demand a bribe from American diplomats. Talleyrand did not change as much as the governments of France, and I had always wondered how Talleyrand survived so many changes in government. Talleyrand seems to have improved with age and experience.

There are few if any parallels to Charles-Maurice, Prince de Talleyrand, in the annals of diplomatic history. In modern times, there have been some examples of men who were able to somehow "dodge the raindrops" and serve for many years in high positions in tumultuous political environs. Anastas Mikoyan's ability to survive long and close proximity to Stalin is one notable instance; but he never possessed Talleyrand's gravitas and international influence, nor did he serve different, hostile regimes. No, Talleyrand is in a league of his own - more politically nimble and long-serving than even the satirical Vicar of Bray.In this classic 1932 biography by Duff Cooper (a picaresque political character in his own right), the legendary French Foreign Minister is treated with respect, almost reverence, and not without a touch of personal fondness. The author clearly does not see Talleyrand as Napoleon came to see him: as nothing but "dung in a silk stocking." Cooper constructs a portrait of Talleyrand based in large part on the diaries of men and women who mixed socially with the legendary statesman in the salons of Paris, London and elsewhere. I have found that such sources are most enlightening and allow the reader to gain a more nuanced perspective and human reflection of the subject. The picture of Talleyrand that emerges is one of a world-class charmer, a conversationalist nonpareil. One gets the sense that Talleyrand would succeed as well in early twenty-first century Washington as he did in early nineteenth century Paris.Much has been made of Talleyrand's unusual ability to survive the convulsions of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic period. Cooper suggests that he was sensitive to criticism on that account and defended his decision to serve such fundamentally different regimes this way: "At every epoch there is some good to be done or some harm to hinder; that is why, if one loves his country, on can, and in my opinion, one ought to, serve it under all the Governments that it adopts." A mode of thinking contemporary Democrats and Republicans might profit from.Cooper argues vigorously that Talleyrand was a man of a few deeply held positions on foreign policy, but perhaps little in the way of deeply held moral convictions. "He was not one who would die for his principles, nor even suffer serious inconvenience on their account, but he held to them with singular tenacity and was faithful to them - in his fashion." The overriding foreign policy issue that Talleyrand championed was peace and comity with England, France's historical nemesis. Cooper calls Talleyrand's position on England "fearlessly consistent" and ultimately far-sighted and sound. "He had welcomed it before the Revolution, he had striven for it by the side Mirabeau, he had pursued it under the Feuilant Government and under the Girondins, from exile he had urged it upon Danton, during the Directorate he had endeavored to return it, and under the Consulate he had promoted it at the Peace of Amiens; he had remembered it at Erfurt and supported it against Napoleon in good and in evil days." Talleyrand was not physically brave, but he was unflappable on positions of policy in the face of the toughest negotiations or personal invective, and the desire for a stable peace with England was a stance from which he never wavered.Talleyrand led a crowded and improbable life, yet I found the most arresting chapter of this biography to be the last. In the sunset of his life, this octogenarian ci-devant priest, this married bishop and lecher, this revolutionary ex-communicated by Rome, embarked upon a slow and thoughtful return to faith, literally signing his peace with the Catholic Church just hours before his death. It was a final peace treaty of sorts that absorbed as much time, deliberation, and posturing as any he had crafted in the realm of international relations.

In the main I thoroughly enjoyed this biography. There were some print as well as some chronological errors that should have been noted prior to publication (i.e., Alexander died in 1825, not 1852.). Thanks

Come on.....Mark Cuban could have gotten a lot deeper, but I guess he just wanted a piece of the book authors club. lol. Basically the book was smaller then usual, (height & width). Without his life experiences the book would have been half the pages theres only 60ish. Then you have several 10-12 note taking pages.....Ok so I can save you some money and sum up the book like this...1. Follow what you like to do 2. Find a mentor and learn all you can 3. Don't Give up 4. Read all you can about what your doing 5. Focus on your project 6. Take Notes, Re read and repeat. LOL I just saved you $9.00

Great read from Mark Cuban!!! First the book when you pick it up feel small and a bit flimsy, but it actually had a lot inside. The text is very small so it actually takes long to read then you think. Mark shared a lot of great information on his background and how he actually made it BIG! The book is written in his style and he gets right to the point. I love the selling advice and the twelve steps for success. If you follow Mark's advice your bound for success. Thank you so much for a great book Mark!The only disappointment was finishing the book. Great read for salespeople, people in management and definitely entreprenuers.

My favorite business, personal growth book ever. I've read/listened to many and I've now got both the Audible and Kindle version where I'm on my ninth pass. So to the point that the impact is heightened. Some parts you've read in other business success books, and other parts you'll find nowhere else, yet all have Mark Cuban's brand of fire and zeal. One to read and re-read for years to come.

I really liked the advice he gave. It is great for both young and old. It is all very motivating especially if you are just starting out in business. I am right with him on his advice regarding sales.My advice to those starting out is keep asking yourself if you should be an entrepreneur. If you slowly find yourself disliking the corporate world, go start your own business. Get a real estate license or some other license where you work for an organization yet you are your own boss.The only thing I didn't like about the book was it read like a blog. But then again, that's what Mark intended it to be - a compilation of blogs.Overall, it was great!

I have been intrigued by this man since I became obsessed with Shark Tank. I could tell there was something more going on inside of him- sometimes the editing on the show can make him off to be careless in his competitive tactics, but I always see the genuine care in his eyes and actions & tone of voice. I can't even count how many times I have seen each episode, studying so that I can earn an honorary STMBA so that I can gain an appearance on the show.Not only are there some great gems of advice, the book gives behind the scenes look at the process of starting out a business. I for one have always been of the "read anything I can get my hands on" education, why pay someone a ton if I can figure it out quickly on my own. If a price is to high, I will research high and low to find a less expensive route. I hope he is "in" with my company, and his advice will help me get there, along with the Shark Tank "Jump Start Your Business" book.

This is the second straight book I've read on Mark Cuban and I enjoyed this one much more than the one from last week.It's not a traditional book, but rather a collection of blog posts written by Mark on his advice for attaining success. I really enjoyed his style of writing and I liked hearing the story from his perspective.What I really enjoyed was hearing about the POS car he drove, the two cheap polyester suits he owned, and when he first started how he slept on a couch or floor in an apartment with a bunch of other dudes. Not sure why, but this part really resonated with me. 😉Mark wasn't born into wealth and earned everything he has by working his tail off amongst the other lessons he shares.The end of the book gives Mark's twelve mantras for success as follows:1 - Time is More Valuable than Money2- Commit Random Acts of Kindness3 - No Balls, No Babies4 - Work Hard, Play Hard5 - Don't Let Fear be a Roadblock6 - Expect the Unexpected, and Always be Ready7 - It's Okay to Yell and be Yelled at8 - Everyone gets Down: The Key is How Soon You get Back Up9 - It's not Whether the Glass is Half Empty or Half Full, it's Who is Pouring the Water10 - It's Not the Dreaming, it's in the Doing11 - Pigs get Fat, Hogs get Slaughtered12 - You Only Have to be Right Once!The book was published in November of 2011. It is but 73 pages but has great content. Amazon has 876 ratings for a score of 4.5. Goodreads has 3,284 ratings for a 4.02 with 247 reviews. While I'm not in 100% agreement with Mark on some of his thoughts and ideas, there's certainly enough value here to give it a strong rating and recommend it. Now, onto the other books from the sharks on my bookshelf!

I loved this book. I left the corporate world in 2001 after being downsized by my employer . I worked at the company for 25 years and it was gone in an instant...I know....familiar story. I was over 55 and lost. I decided to start my own internet retail outlet and, thankfully, have been very successful . I learned many hard lessons along the way and reading this book I felt a kin-ship to everything Mark says about business. I wish I had read this book BEFORE I started my business....I may have avoided some of the potholes along the way. Anyhow I think every young business student and as far as that goes every business owner want-a-bee or even every person thinking about starting a business MUST read this book. I am going to get my 20 year old business school student daughter to read it. I am sure it will help her.

If you are a veterinary radiologist or neurologist, or a resident, and you do not yet have this book, your library is now effectively incomplete. This is currently the most comprehensive resource we have to date on this subject and it has been long overdue. My only complaints are that this was not yet written when I was a resident, and my copy did not arrive signed.

I had been searching for a good MRI reference book for quite some time. This book is the most comprehensive guide for MRIs in cats and dogs to date. A bulk of the book focuses on MRI of brain and spinal cord (which is exactly what I wanted), however there are also chapters on MRI of non-neurological structures the head/neck, thorax, abdomen and musculoskeletal system. There is also a nice review of how MRI works in the beginning of the book. The book is nicely organized into categories of congenital/developmental abnormalities and then various disease processes. Dr. Mai amazingly fits everything in here! Not once did I feel like a certain disease was missing from the book. The format is neatly arranged into bullet points with accompanying MRI images. There are also schematic illustrations to help explain certain processes. This book is not merely an imaging book. This book is so comprehensive it can be used to learn about all of the diseases as well. I am a general practitioner with an interest in neurology and am currently pursuing neurology residencies. I am so thankful that this book was published before I entered the field of neurology. Whether you are a general practitioner, radiologist, neurologist or resident in training, I HIGHLY recommend this book!

Overall it’s a good reference book for veterinarians who are interested in MRI.The reason I only gave 4 stars is because the book started falling apart after 1 week of normal usage. I wasn’t going to return it since I have had written my notes in it. As you can see I tried to glue it back together....and it’s not working super well but I am tolerating it.Words of advice...maybe make sure your book is glued together well enough.Otherwise great context. Love the book.

My daughter wanted this for her kids that are 6 and under and the book is pretty silly it does repeat its self each time a page is read also adding the next thing added to the list of what the old lady ate ..it was a fun read but the words are written almost in a circleThe end of the book Does talk about the old lady dying and I'm sure some parents won't like that ..to others it is just good fun humor

Had this when I was a little and I loved it. A bit of forewarning in case you're not familiar. She dies in the end.

Love this book! Just like the one I read as a child. Shows all the things in her stomach as you turn the pages.

A favorite from my childhood I wanted this book for my daughter. We ordered this version and it has two identical pages in a row. The "cow" section is included twice and the horse section is missing.

I have always loved this book, all the rhyming and ridiculous things this lady eats. I wanted to get this to share with my kids. It is a colorful book, and the way the writing swirls around is pretty fun and a cute way to spice up the book. My children thought it was great and we read it often. I felt like I got this book for a steal of a deal.

Great read-aloud. The animals come separately but are a must-have. I just wish I could find it in hardback.

I might not of looked close enough but this is a paper thin book with a CD in it. Which I did not know. So all in all, I was surprised to find the CD and thought is was a bigger book then it was. That is the only reason I am giving it a four. If you want to read it to your child or have a CD read it then it would be a 5. I like bigger words and no CD's. I would have to go back and check to see if this said it had one or not. He is a very smart little 20month old and is already picking out words and likes to read on his own. It is just a little flimsy for a young one.

kids love this story. I love the hole in the book concept. It’s very bright and cute illustrations. Classic for a reason!

Hunt, are profiled from their early years, through their wealth building phase and then, in most cases through a period of wealth dissipation generally accomplished by their heirs.The book touches upon the social, political and economic background of the country at large and the state of Texas in particular, as the discovery of oil and the rise of the automobile (and subsequently the OPEC oil embargo) act in concert to generate truly outrageous sums of money concentrated in relatively few hands. That those hands turned out to be in most cases relatively uneducated, bigoted spendthrifts only makes the story that much more entertaining.Many of the actors were passingly familiar to me (Nelson Bunker Hunt in particular), though surprisingly, some I'd never heard of, despite their compelling stories and huge fortunes. Finally, there are the children of H. L. Hunt who fathered three separate families at the same time. His first family included sons Bunker and Herbert who tried to corner the silver market, and Lamar who founded the American Football League and the team that is now the Kansas City Chiefs. Hunt's second family included son Ray who has taken a relatively small inheritance and turned it into an international oil and real estate empire. Embedded in that culture, of course, I knew of the Texas Oil families (I also happen to be an original Kansas City Chiefs' fan), but had no idea of the coziness of these landed gentry (oil acreage)and politicians, influencing national policies for their own benefit to the detriment of others, perhaps the forerunner of today's political mess.Over the years I did see, from the inside, the manipulations of banks and markets by "oil people" - it wasn't pretty!!!!At any rate, Bryan Burrough has, almost with photographic skill, written a real-life scenario comparable to any suspenseful mystery writer of today - I could not put the book down, staying up late at night wanting to know how it all worked out.CAVEAT: NOT ALL TEXANS ARE INSANE - JUST THOSE TO WHOM MONEY/POWER IS/ARE GOD !!!!HGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

This is the one best book you can find on how the great oil fortunes of TX were built. This is a monumental work on the subject. I live in TX, and it's truly a tale of history of our state as seen from the oil industry. TX oil fortunes have affected our world on many levels.Brilliant job, readable, and you won't put it down. I bought a copy just to reread. It's quite a primer on oil power and politics.I highly recommend it for anyone interested in TX history or business history. A classic work destined to be read for years to come.

A lot of interesting information and most of it new to me, which usually is a plus for any book I read. However, the book does turn to run on quite a bit on parts that, frankly, I didn't think were that interesting. I suspect that if I were from Texas, my score might have been higher by a star because of the familiarity of some names and events in the lore of the state. The book isn't only about oil, but about the amazing development of a state in terms of economics and power at the national level. The story goes right on through to the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Oilers, of whose origins and ownership I knew very little about. I recommend it if you're into that kind of story...of incredible wealth, made, spent, made again and how succeeding generations either squandered it or enhanced it.
