Have loved Star Wars Comics for the past 2 decades or so. I was a HUGE fan of what Darkhorse did with the series, and when Marvel took over, after the Disney buyout, I was rather nervous, that all the new Star Wars comics would have cameos of Donald Duck or something, LOL. I must say that I have never been so happy to be wrong. This series is to date ( as far as I know) the only Comic "series" to tacke the the newest Trilogy continuity. I believe Marvel has doen some mini-series in this era , but as far a long runnin series I think thiis series is your ticket, if you want a book set during this era. This series starts off, with the Resistance being formed but before the events of the Force Awakens. I am not sure how long before, but I would estimate maybe a yearor so. Overall the series is pretty captivating and delves into the actions of Poe and his "Black Sqaudron" during the Cold War between the Resistance and the First Order. The story is a serious one, but doesn't go into the dark depths of the Star Wars universe like some of the Dark Horse titles did. I am ok with this, and this is defenitely a Star Wars story that is suitable for younger readers, but not "kiddy."I think the art style is pretty good, not as good as some of the stuff Dark Horse sent us, but it is quality. I would compare it to the new Marvel Star Wars series that they put out which focuses on the main characters of the Original Trilogy.Overall, I recommend picking this series up, it is fun. I don't think is "seminal piece" of Star Wars comics lore (like Dark Empire by Dark Horse), but it is a fun way to explore the New Trilogy era.

This book was a real surprise. You see, I wasn't enamored with the Poe character from The Force Awakens. I thought he was OK (and, I'll admit, he's been growing on me). But, it wasn't an instant like. Now, this book comes along and breaks my expectation. Not only is it a damn good Star Wars read, the stories have made me like the Poe Dameron character more than I did before! Here's what I like about this book:1. We finally get a story that adds depth to the new movie and continuity! I love reading about Luke and Leia and Han, but, damn, man! It's time to learn about the new characters from TFA. This book does that.2. The story references and continues from the young adult novel Before The Awakening. You don't need to read that book to enjoy this comic (I didn't read it), but you've got some continuity there--and that's cool!3. The story also fleshes out part of TFA. In the opening scene of Episode VII, we see Poe meet with Lor San Tekka. This comic shows where that quest began--with General Organa's orders to seek out the Explorer and try to learn where it is Luke Skywalker has fled. This story adds more depth to the movie.4. We see the creation of Black Squadron, and we get to know the original pilots: Snap Wexley, Kare Kun, L'ulo, Jess Pava, and Oddy Muva. It is nice to get some more depth on these characters. For example, did you know that Snap and Kare are romantically involved? Did you know L'ulo practically raised Poe, and Poe's parents were Rebel Alliance fighters? Yep. Poe spent his childhood on Yavin 4! Jess is a wiz with starfighter mechanics--always trying new gear and systems. And, Oddy starts off flying an old surplus A-Wing because the Resistance doesn't have enough of the T-70 X-Wings.5. Agent Terex is an excellent antagonist. He's a royal, pompous, ass--a real Imperial. And, his personal ship is the Carrion Spike. Well, that's Grand Moff's Tarkin's personal vessel..or was, 35+ years ago. How did Terex get his hands on it?6. There's cool, Star Warsy Space Opera stuff! An ancient city in the center of a mountain. First Order stormtroopers on hoverpacks. Japanese-Godzilla-like-giant-monsters! A prison that needs no walls as it is set on a high gravity world. The prison is set in a 1G field, and if anybody leaves that field, the 8Gs of the world outside will kill them. Cool stuff!7. The stories are interesting and fun and feel like Star Wars. They're also a large dose of humor. Reading Poe and Terex go at it verbally is a hoot! And, BB-8 gathers the astromechs from the squadron to go about their own little mission. Cracks me up, this line of astros, following BB-8, single file, all electronically hooting and humming. What a scene!8. Papa Toren returns! Did you read the Lando book? Lando met with Papa Toren, and it was Toren who put the contract out on Calrissian. He's this interesting alien. Silent. And, the's got these little guys with wings that buzz around him, doing his communicating for him. So, here we are, 40+ years later, and Toren is in prison! Neat connection for those who catch it.Yes, I loved this book. And, I can't wait for volume two to come out (the wait is too long!).

The trick with the backstory material in these large franchise universes (Star Wars and Star Trek) is building off the canon material and filling in the details, without painting yourself into a corner that will be made obsolete by the next movie. This does the trick well - known characters and alien races, merged with a goal (find the Lor San Tekka seen in the Force Awakens). It's sort of a tease, but the story, the action, the charactes all worked together here for an enjoyable story.

Not all that interesting with sub-par artwork. So forgettable that I can’t think of anything else to say but need more words for review.

Fan Fave Poe Dameron gets to show off his wit and skill in this one-shot. Well written and drawn, very engaging. Wonderful addition to the canon.

Very mediocre, but the series becomes amazing so it’s worth the read.

Really love all 3 volumes about Poe. Beautiful art, interesting stories and fills in some gaps.

The Ancient Hebrews (Cultures of the Past), by Kenny Mann

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-Good-quality full-color photographs, reproductions, drawings, and maps combine with lucid texts to create informative and attractive research sources on ancient cultures. The Ancient Hebrews discusses the social and religious history of the Jewish people and its influence on modern Judaism, and touches on the relationship between present-day Israel and Arab countries. Mesopotamia examines the social structure and cultural history of that area and the legacy the people have left to the modern world. Clarice Swisher's The Ancient Near East (Lucent, 1995) offers a more detailed study of Mesopotamian cultures but with black-and-white images. Sidebars provide additional information on the language, literature, law, and beliefs of both societies. Helpful glossaries and time lines are also included. Eye-catching, useful titles for collections needing historical material about the Middle East.Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukee, ORCopyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The way in which "The Ancient Hebrews" volume of the Cultures of the Past series is different from others is that the illustrations are mostly paintings rather than archaeological artifacts, which is particularly telling as to what centuries of dispute over the Holy Land have done to such treasures. In this volume Kenny Mann basically provides a historical perspective on the people and history of the Bible.Mann follows the standard five chapter format of the series in examining the history, culture, religion, daily life, and legends of the Jewish people: (1) In the Beginning deals with their history, from first arriving in the Promised Land to the triumph of the Romans; (2) A Living Faith covers their belief system, from God and the Prophets to the Torah; (3) The Tellers of the Tales provides a concise look at the Hebrew Bible and the Jewish tradition of religious scholarship as their cultural history; (4) The Universal Way examines the relationship between beliefs and society; and (5) Past,, Present, and Future deals with the legacy of the Hebrews from the idea of trade as a tool for survival in the Arab world to the nation of Israel.Obviously the chief attraction of this book for young readers is how it goes beyond the Bible to provide a look at the history and culture of the Hebrew people. The back of the book includes a time line of the history of the ancient Hebrews, a glossary, books for further reading, a bibliography, and an index. Other volumes in this excellent series look at not only the major civilizations of the past, such as the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, but also at civilizations that usually do not get near as much treatment in your standard World History textbook such as the Ancient African Kingdom of Kush, the Celts of Northern Europe, and India's Gupta Dynasty.

I am not finished with this book (122 pages), but already it strikes me as a important retelling/analysis of a significant period of American history. Probably many who followed the events and personalities more closely than I are familiar with this period, but I was a college student in 1968, working three jobs to stay in school and not participating in anti war protests except the one between my career Army father and myself. My college was a relatively small one in Northern California whose protesting never approached the intensity or scope of Berkeley or Kent State. Nevertheless, many of the characters that Mr. O’Donnell brings into his book were familiar to me, especially the Kennedys. I will never forget my father’s grief over JFK. The book’s presentation of the major players and events of that time period are helping me understand the turmoil and pain the country went through. I proudly admit to being a fan of “The Last Word,” so I was primed to like the book. What I was not prepared for is the way that the narrative is pulling me back into that time. I am viewing now what I missed or didn’t understand In 1968. It is painful, sometimes shocking, completely engrossing. I’m not sorry I wasn’t at Berkeley or any of the other campuses that saw the intense protests: I wouldn’t have met my husband of almost fifty years, for one thing. I wish I could do justice to the book with an erudite review that would inspire you to read it. It needs to be read by anyone who lived through it and by anyone who wants to understand the America that emerged from it. I look forward to finishing it and rereading it.PS. L S Tucker and Tracy Rowan (further down the list of reviews) have done justice to “Playing with Fire” with their reviews of this intelligent, thoughtful account of a disturbing year in America. I finished the book without much pausing and remain haunted by the narrative, partly because of the disturbing events of the current political scene. I really try not to watch and listen as American values are denigrated. I turn to accounts of the Revolutionary War and the stories of people who sacrificed so much to create this great nation. I study the Declaration of Independence closely, marveling at the courage and audacity of those men signed it and fought for it. I am briefly comforted.

Gripping. Transformative. Powerful. It's not easy to describe the book that I just put down. The 45th Presidential election made it feel like normalcy was crumbling and everything was shifting--and rightly so. But what remained as a creeping, underlying terror was the uncertainty of it all. Most people thought: we have never been here before--never so divided nor had we ever had a campaign so full of animosity, slander and political powerplayers.Lawrence O'Donnell burned that naivete to the core with a--as another reviewer put it--hot lava flow of information. That really is the best way to describe the pace and searing intensity with which you're pummeled by the gory, juicy political history O'Donnell presents. Every chapter is concise, factual, poignant, and every chapter's end will also leave the reader with goose bumps--either out of sorrow, intrigue, or epiphany. But, the biggest takeaway from Playing with Fire, is that, yes America, we have been here before, and we most definitely can come back from the brink. In a way, this book is almost like a love poem to the LBJ and Nixonian presidencies because without them and the philosophical/political revolution that the Vietnam war spurred, we would far more likely be worse off. And in my eyes, I found the ending to McCarthy's Senate chapters one of the most dramatic. Where would be today, and how many more losses would we have suffered if McCarthy never stormed out of those chambers that day, scowling, and announcing his off-the-record his presidential bid to a NYT reporter? When reading about Vietnam in Playing with Fire, and O'Donnell's synopsis of the information provided in the Pentagon Papers, I learned many things I had never known(or maybe learned in school but forgot). There's also a very well written scene in which O'Donnell shows AG Katzenbach as a master manipulator flipping Congress on its skull after exposing LBJ's sleight-of-hand in his Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that gave the then-president, essentially, unlimited war power in SEA. It's from the McCarthy chapter, and reads like you're watching a taut, political thriller. If you're a fan of The Last Word, you'll be an even bigger fan of this book. And, as a newcomer to political history, I found this to be one of the easiest and informative books to read. And, when reading Playing with Fire, I couldn't help but think of the blisteringly informative book 'Cadillac Desert'. While both books are about drastically different things; the pace, the tone, the and the masterfully researched wellspring of facts married with good, informative prose makes me want to recommend it to any fellow reader who may be looking at this review.Enjoy your book! :-)

Put aside how extraordinary the author is to write this now. I'm going to call it a collective memoir. His story is our story, how Nixon pushed through. I can't put it down. My late husband knew and sparred wth Haldeman and Ehrlichman at UCLA and LBJs nephew, Rod was a close friend. Other friends were extraordinary survivors of the Vietnam war, whose tales would turn you to stone. I am moved by O'Donnell's unfolding of the time and it's relavance to our narrow today. His brilliant Playing with Fire is a hot lava flow of the past that is still rolling into the present. It's a remarkable sucker punch of history -- a bracing reminder that 1968 was a devastating year. His writing is poetic in its charity.

I was in college in 1968 and remember many of the events described in detail in this book. I attended a McCarthy rally, shook RFK's hand when he visited my town in New Jersey and stood at the railroad tracks as his funeral train went through the same town. I remember where I was when MLK and RFK were killed and listening to the news about the urban rioting that followed. I also remember the Democratic convention in Chicago and the presidential election that saw Nixon win the Oval Office. But, what this book did so well was to fill in the back story and gaps of my understanding of those events with the details of the political dealings and behind-the-scenes events that made the 1968 election process the last one of its kind and forever changed the political atmosphere of this country. I highly recommend this book to everyone who has a memory of 1968 and, more importantly, for those too young to remember. This is both a detailed history and a cautionary tale that shows the ugly underbelly of our political system while highlighting some of the people who were the heroes of that era.

I purchased an authentic Harry Potter wand for my 8 year old granddaughters birthday, but wondered how she would use it. I didn’t want it to end up at the bottom of her toy box after five minutes, so I thought a book of spells might do the trick. I like this book because it is inexpensive, has the words to the spell, what it is used for, and how to move the wand to make the spell. She loves it.

My 11yo daughter is a big Harry Potter fan and really liked this book. She chose to purchase it with her birthday money and was not disappointed. She also passed it around her friends at school and they liked it as well.

This reminded me of spells, but best was- how to pronounce each one and what it's for.

Bought this for my 8 year old son. He loves it and poured through it in one sitting!

Used for our grandkids after a trip to universal studios. Simply loved it

My seven year old son loves it. However, it is terribly edited, and appears to not have even been proofread. Grammar mistakes and lack of punctuation abound. The sentences are also badly constructed even if you manage to put in the right punctuation.

My 9-year-old granddaughter is a Harry Potter fanatic so she was very pleased with this book. I have a photo of her giving spell casting instructions to her younger sister and cousin which to me is priceless. The book is very well done and a nice addition to a Potter collection for any child. I was well pleased.

My kids got this for Christmas and they walk around doing spells all the time.it is great because it is easy to read the spells and it shows you how to move the wand this is great for any Harry Potter lover.

Love the recipes for buttercream in this book, really good! It got four stars because there are NO pictures. I like pictures when I cook... I guess they aren’t as important for icing though.

Great recipes that us home cooks can really use with ingredients we all have at home. Great book

Chapter 1God With Us in SolidarityGod is a compassionate God. This means, first of all, that our God has chosen to be God-with-us. To be able to know and feel better this divine solidarity, let us explore the experience of someone being truly with us.When do we receive real comfort and consolation? Is it when someone teaches us how to think or act? Is it when we receive advice about where to go or what to do? Is it when we hear words of reassurance and hope? Sometimes, perhaps. But what really counts is that in moments of pain and suffering someone stays with us. More important than any particular action or word of advice is the simple presence of someone who cares. When someone says to us in the midst of a crisis, "I do not know what to say or what to do, but I want you to realize that I am with you, that I will not leave you alone," we have a friend through whom we can find consolation and comfort. In a time so filled with methods and techniques designed to change people, to influence their behavior, and to make them do new things and think new thoughts, we have lost the simple but difficult gift of being present to each other. We have lost this gift because we have been led to believe that presence must be useful. We say, "Why should I visit this person? I can't do anything anyway. I don't even have anything to say. Of what use can I be?" Meanwhile, we have forgotten that it is often in "useless," unpretentious, humble presence to each other that we feel consolation and comfort. Simply being with someone is difficult because it asks of us that we share in the other's vulnerability, enter with him or her into the experience of weakness and powerlessness, become part of uncertainty, and give up control and self-determination. And still, whenever this happens, new strength and new hope is being born. Those who offer us comfort and consolation by being and staying with us in moments of illness, mental anguish, or spiritual darkness often grow as close to us as those with whom we have biological ties. They show their solidarity with us by willingly entering the dark, uncharted spaces of our lives. For this reason, they are the ones who bring new hope and help us discover new directions. These reflections offer only a glimpse of what we mean when we say that God is a God-with-us, a God who came to share our lives in solidarity. It does not mean that God solves our problems, shows us the way out of our confusion, or offers answers for our many questions. God might do all of that, but the solidarity of God consists in the fact that God is willing to enter with us into our problems, confusions, and questions. That is the good news of God's taking on human flesh. The Evangelist Matthew, after describing the birth of Jesus, writes: "Now all this took place to fulfil the words spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 'The Virgin shall conceive and give birth to a son and they will call him Immanuel,' a name which means'God-is-with-us' " (Mt 1:22-23).As soon as we call God, "God-with-us," we enter into a new relationship of intimacy. By calling God Immanuel, we recognize God's commitment to live in solidarity with us, to share our joys and pains, to defend and protect us, and to suffer all of life with us. The God-with-us is a close God, a God whom we call our refuge, our stronghold, our wisdom, and even, more intimately, our helper, our shepherd, our love. We will never really know God as a compassionate God if we do not understand with our heart and mind that "the Word became flesh and lived among us" (Jn 1:14) NRSV.Often we say to each other in a bitter tone: "You do not know what you are talking about because you did not march in protest, participate in the strike, or experience the hatred of the bystanders, because you were never hungry, never knew cold, or never felt real isolation." When we say such things, we express the deep conviction that we are willing to listen to consoling words only when they are born out of solidarity with the condition that was or is ours. God wants to know our condition fully and does not want to take away any pain which God has not fully tasted. God's compassion is anchored in the most intimate solidarity, a solidarity that allows us to say with the psalmist, "This is our God, and we are the people he pastures, the flock that he guides" (Ps 95:7).With Gut FeelingsHow do we know this is anything more than a beautiful idea? How do we know that God is our God and not a stranger, an outsider, a passerby? We know this because in Jesus, God's compassion became visible to us. Jesus not only said, "Be compassionate as your Father is compassionate," but Jesus also was the concrete embodiment of this divine compassion in our world. Jesus' response to the ignorant, the hungry, the blind, the lepers, the widows, and all those who came to him with their suffering, flowed from the divine compassion which led God to become one of us. We need to pay close attention to Jesus' words and actions if we are to gain insight into the mystery of this divine compassion. We would misunderstand the many miraculous stories in the Gospels if we were to be impressed simply by the fact that sick and tormented people were suddenly liberated from their pains. If this were indeed the central event of these stories, a cynic might rightly remark that most people during Jesus' day were not cured and that those who were cured only made it worse for those who were not. What is important here is not the cure of the sick, but the deep compassion that moved Jesus to these cures. There is a beautiful expression in the Gospels that appears only twelve times and is used exclusively in reference to Jesus or the Father. That expression is "to be moved with compassion." The Greek verb splangchnizomai reveals to us the deep and powerful meaning of this expression. The splangchna are the entrails of the body, or as we might say today, the guts. They are the place where our most intimate and intense emotions are located. They are the center from which both passionate love and passionate hate grow. When the Gospels speak about Jesus' compassion as his being moved in the entrails, they are expressing something very deep and mysterious. The compassion that Jesus felt was obviously quite different from superficial or passing feelings of sorrow or sympathy. Rather, it extended to the most vulnerable part of Jesus' being. It is related to the Hebrew word for compassion, rachamim, which refers to the womb of Yahweh. Indeed, compassion is such a deep, central, and powerful emotion in Jesus that it can only be described as a movement of the womb of God. There, all the divine tenderness and gentleness lies hidden. There, God is father and mother, brother and sister, son and daughter. There, all feelings, emotions, and passions are one in divine love. When Jesus was moved to compassion, the source of all life trembled, the ground of all love burst open, and the abyss of God's immense, inexhaustible, and unfathomable tenderness revealed itself. This is the mystery of God's compassion as it becomes visible in the healing stories of the New Testament. When Jesus saw the crowd harassed and dejected like sheep without a shepherd, he felt with them in the center of his being (Mt 9:36). When Jesus saw the blind, the paralyzed, and the deaf being brought to him from all directions, he trembled from within and experienced their pains in his own heart (Mt 14:14). When he noticed that the thousands who had followed him for days were tired and hungry, Jesus said, I am moved with compassion (Mk 8:2). And so it was with the two blind men who called after him (Mt 9:27), the leper who fell to his knees in front of him (Mk 1:41), and the widow of Nain who was burying her only son (Lk 7:13). They moved Jesus, they made him feel with all his intimate sensibilities the depth of their sorrow. He became lost with the lost, hungry with the hungry, and sick with the sick. In Jesus, all suffering was sensed with a perfect sensitivity. The great mystery revealed to us in this is that Jesus, who is the sinless son of God, chose in total freedom to suffer fully our pains and thus to let us discover the true nature of our own passions. In him, we see and experience the persons we truly are. Jesus who is divine lives our broken humanity not as a curse (Gn 3:14-19), but as a blessing. His divine compassion makes it possible for us to face our sinful selves, because it transforms our broken human condition from a cause of despair into a source of hope. This is what we mean when we say that Jesus Christ reveals God's solidarity with us. In and through Jesus Christ we know that God is our God, a God who has experienced our brokenness, who has become sin for us (2 Co 5:21). God has embraced everything human with infinite tenderness and compassion.Toward New LifeBut what about the cures? Did not the blind see, the lepers become pure, the paralyzed walk again, and the widow see her son come back to life? Is that not what counts? Is that not what proves that God is God and he really loves us? Let us be very careful with our pragmatism. It was out of his compassion that Jesus' healing emerged. He did not cure to prove, to impress, or to convince. His cures were the natural expression of his being our God. The mystery of God's love is not that our pain is taken away, but that God first wants to share that pain with us. Out of this divine solidarity comes new life. Jesus' being moved in the center of his being by human pain is indeed a movement toward new life. God is our God, the God of the living. In the divine womb of God, life is always born again. The great mystery is not the cures, but the infinite compassion which is their source. We know too well what it means when cures are performed without compassion. We have seen men and women who can walk again, see again, speak again, but whose hearts remain dark and bitter. We know too well that cures not born out of care are false cures leading not to light but to darkness. Let us not fool ourselves with a shortcut to new life. The many cures by Jesus recorded in the Gospels can never be separated from his being with us. They witness to the infinite fecundity of Jesus' divine compassion, and show us the beautiful fruits of his solidarity with our condition. The truly good news is that God is not a distant God, a God to be feared and avoided, a God of revenge, but a God who is moved by our pains and participates in the fullness of the human struggle. The miraculous cures in the Gospels are hopeful and joyful reminders of this good news, which is our true consolation and comfort. Our Competitive SelvesWhen we take a critical look at ourselves, we have to recognize that competition, not compassion, is our main motivation in life. We find ourselves deeply immersed in all sorts of competition. Our whole sense of self is dependent upon the way we compare ourselves with others and upon the differences we can identify. When the question "Who am I?" is put to the powers of this world--school officials, church representatives, placement officers, athletic directors, factory managers, television and radio announcers--the answer is simply, "You are the difference you make." It is by our differences, distinctions, that we are recognized, honored, rejected, or despised. Whether we are more or less intelligent, practical, strong, fast, handy, or handsome depends upon those with whom we are compared or those with whom we compete. It is upon these positive or negative distinctions that much of our self-esteem depends. It does not take much reflection to realize that in all family problems, race conflicts, class confrontations, and national or international disputes, these real or imaginary distinctions play a central role. Indeed, we invest much of our energy in defending the differences between people and groups of people. Thus, we define ourselves in ways that require us to maintain distance from one another. We are very protective of our "trophies." After all, who are we if we cannot proudly point to something special that sets us apart from others? This all-pervasive competition, which reaches into the smallest corners of our relationships, prevents us from entering into full solidarity with each other, and stands in the way of our being compassionate. We prefer to keep compassion on the periphery of our competitive lives. Being compassionate would require giving up dividing lines and relinquishing differences and distinctions. And that would mean losing our identities! This makes it clear why the call to be compassionate is so frightening and evokes such deep resistance. This fear, which is very real and influences much of our behavior, betrays our deepest illusions: that we can forge our own identities; that we are the collective impressions of our surroundings; that we are the trophies and distinctions we have won. This, indeed, is our greatest illusion. It makes us into competitive people who compulsively cling to our differences and defend them at all cost, even to the point of violence.A New SelfThe compassion Jesus offers challenges us to give up our fearful clinging and to enter with him into God's fearless life. In saying be compassionate as your loving God is compassionate, Jesus invites us to be as close to each other as God is to us. He even asks us to love one another with God's own compassion. A divine compassion is a compassion without the slightest tinge of competition. Therefore, only God can be wholly compassionate because only God is not in competition with us. The paradox of God's compassion is that God can be compassionate because God is wholly other than we are. Because God is wholly other, God can become wholly as we are. God can become so deeply human because God is so fully divine. In short, God can be fully compassionate because there can be no comparison with us and thus God is in no way in competition with us.Jesus' command be compassionate as your loving God is compassionate is a command to participate in the compassion of our Creator God. Jesus requires us to unmask the illusion of our competitive selfhood, to give up clinging to our imaginary distinctions as sources of identity, and to be taken up completely into intimacy with God. This is the mystery of the Christian life: to receive a new self, a new identity, which depends not on what we can achieve, but on what we are willing to receive. This new self is our participation in the divine life in and through Christ. Jesus wants us to belong to God as he belongs to God; he wants us to be children of God as he is a child of God; he wants us to let go of the old life, which is so full of fears and doubts, and to receive the new life, the life of God. In and through Christ we receive a new identity that enables us to say, "I am not the esteem I can collect through competition, but the love I have freely received from God." It allows us to say with Paul, "I live now not with my own life but with the life of Christ who lives in me" (Ga 2:20).

This was my textbook during my junior year "service" class at Notre Dame. The co-author, Father Don (McNeill) was my instructor. The course was great, but I had forgotten about the book. More than a decade later, as I re-engaged myself with social justice and welfare, and international orphanage work, I re-discovered this book while reading through all of Henri Nouwen's books. I found this book incredibly insightful for a more matured person in search for purposeful social action in the world.Key points I take away from this book - 1) We are overwhelmed by the world's problems and crisis if we do not have a center in our hearts and a community to which we belong; 2) We allow ourselves to be dominated by "clock" time, rather than trusting in the eternal; 3) If we think the world depended on our wits and efforts to "save", we are more doomed than those we are trying to serve; 4) Moving from seeking power (in social action) to seeking community; 5) Find how goodness (Christ) is already working even in places of despair. The last point has guided my work and restored my hope as I sat in desolate orphanages overseas -- and it is true! There are so many more insights, and every time I re-read it, I get something more from it. I've made a habit to take the book with me whenever I am off to a distant land working on child welfare issues. The reader will undoubtedly get her own take from it. I see this book as this deep reflecting pool. As a person grows in social action, a person may come to see and learn different things from this book. It's a companion book to be read at different stages of life. For those who may consider the book a little too "conceptual" and feel they need more "practical" guidance, I'd recommendWhen Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor... and Yourself by Brian Fikkert, Steve Corbett and Danny Campbell (Feb 1, 2010)

Compassion: A Reflection on the Christian LifeInitial Question:How does Nouwen's gentle tone connect to the strong language of compassion-infused discipleship?---Nouwen (& et. al)'s Compassion will be a book I return to to fuel my soul in times of doubt or cloudy direction. I've highlighted and underlined and highlighted again so many of the simple, eloquently phrased sentences, that I might need to start committing the book to memory. The most profound result from the book is how Nouwen's pastoral tone guides the reader toward seeing the necessity of Jesus' call to the compassionate life as a disciple. My largest "take away?" --Compassion is the direct opposite of competition. Compassion cultivates love and a loss of self; competition is the preservation of self (or the self's tribe) through the weaponry of anger, slander, etc. In order to cultivate a life (and people) of compassion, we're going to have to face our inner (and cultural) tendencies toward competition.

The not too well known poet Yosano Akiko wrote, "This one thing will I ask you: Are you with the people or apart from them? Depending on your answer, you and I will be forever divided between heaven and earth." This is the heart of Compassion. Nouwen and his co-authors argue that it is only genuine compassion, the ability to go outside of one's self in love for the other, that we find the meaning of God's love in Christ. It speaks directly to the heart of the Gospel, an incarnate faith in a life of compassion. Christ is known in "the least of these," in the person who is next to you now, on the bus, in the office, at your home. This is one of the books that I would really like to recommend to any Christian, regardless of their interests in theology or spirituality.Centered around the self-emptying, kenotic love of God in Christ, the book reminds us that Christianity is not a dogma, or a rule, or some system, but rather a Person. The authors use St. Paul's letter to the Philippians, 2:6-11, as the scriptural touchstone of the book. "In your minds you must be the same as Christ Jesus..." Dogmas and theologies are footnotes, Nouwen suggests, to the reality of the crucified and risen Christ as experienced by the disciples and his followers. They are essential, but they are not the "thing" in itself. To come to know the meaning of our lives, our creation, we must enter into the love of God directly through compassion.Anyone in the field of social services would benefit from this book immensely. Sometimes we loose sight of the value and meaning of our lives. This book is an antidote. This insightful work is divided into three parts. 1) The Compassionate God- examining the nature and mission of Christ and what he tells us about the Father. 2) The Compassionate Life- the roles and meaning behind community, displacement and togetherness. 3) The Compassionate Way- Patience, Prayer and Action. Each chapter stands alone and can be profitably used in group studies or for personal reflection. One of my favorite books! I wish I could give it to you! Enjoy!

Another excellent book by Henri Nouwen, co-written with Donald P. McNeill and Douglas A Morrison. This book delves into the heart of the difficulty in expressing true compassion. I never thought of compassion as the antithesis of competition, but the more I ponder it, the more I am forced to re-evaluate why I do the things that I do. I borrowed this book from a friend, only to realize after the first chapter that it belonged permanently on my bedside shelf. It will take me awhile to absorb and act on the truths presented humbly and sincerely in this great little title. If your heart yearns to help those in need, but you find yourself disenchanted or stymied, unable to cross the invisible boundry between your desire and the need before you - I recommend that you read this book and find out how you can follow the One who already went before us to became God With Us, the essence of compassion.

From Library Journal

After defining his parameters for inclusion in a five-page introduction, devotee Rosalsky (long a member of United in Group Harmony Association) gets down to business in this big, bountiful book--an obvious paean to the subject matter. He notes that his goal "was to gather historical data addressing rhythm and blues and doo-wop vocal groups from every resource available." Proceeding alphabetically, Rosalsky covers not only the groups but also individual members' stints with other groups. He also cites each group's geographical roots, provides brief background information, and lists available discographical information (in chronological order of output). Since R&B and doo wop have played such a pivotal role in the development of American rock and pop music, the research here goes a long way toward establishing the "genealogy" of the genres. No group is too obscure for inclusion, with well-knowns like the Five Satins and the Crests competing for space with the Altairs and the Goldentones. There's likely more information than the average "oldies"-radio listener will want, although disk jockeys and collectors of such music will find this painstaking research extremely worthwhile. This is not essential for most public libraries, but academic libraries should weigh its purchase seriously, and music libraries whose scope includes popular music should consider it essential.-David M. I like the style in which this book is written. It's easy to read, has lots of entries, & the writing is clear. All of the entries follow the same format: personnel, notes, & discography. Citations are listed with every entry, to let the reader know the sources for the information, an admirable feature. I like the fact that Mr. Rosalsky occasionally wanders off the beaten path, for example, on p. 396, he has a listing for the Miller Sisters. Not a whole lot of info is included, but this group is not covered, nor even mentioned, in 99% of the R&B books out there. He lists 20 records by the Millers, a high percentage of their output (he missed two on Tri-Boro, & two on GMC). He indicates that the Millers were on Hull 736 (true, but it was issued as by "Leo Price"). He misses a whole bunch of other back-up work, some credited on the label (like on J.A. DeCanio, Q, & Miller High Figh [not the two he mentions on this label]), some not credited (like Bobby Hendricks & also the Avons). Other factual errors include (p. 69) his discussion of "Arlene & Her Girlfriends" (on Old Town), who he claims "were not Arlene Smith & the Chantels but imitators." Firstly, it was not "Arlene & Her Girlfriends", it was "Erlene & Her Girlfriends", a big difference when making that particular comparison. And when I listen to Erlene's four songs, I can't hear any attempt to sound like the Chantels, so I wouldn't think of calling them "imitators." Overall a good, informative book, but it has errors.

As someone who has been collecting records for over thirty years, I have compiled a number of other outstanding reference books on this subject over the years. As such, I found this book to be a bit disappointing in that I did not find as much new information that I had hoped for. However, if you do not have such titles as "Big Al Pavlows R & B Book" or Griblin/Schiffs "Complete Book of Doo-Wop" then this would be a very worthwhile investment. Would have liked to have seen more information on what these folks are doing today. This was a huge undertaking to say the least. The format was disappointing to me at first but the more I delved into this volume, the more I enjoyed it.

This book provided me with the information I needed for my compilation of 'oldies" song and artists from the 50's & 60's.

One of the BEST R & B albums ever made. Period

I believe the reviews of Paul Tognetti, Mangologist, and the Library Journal missed the primary purpose of the book and its intrinsic value. As Rosalsky stated, "...to provide R & B vocal group collectors, collectors of music reference material, disc jockeys, and other music enthusiasts with information concerning the performers in R & B vocal groups,..."It is Rosalsky's 78 page Appendix (p. 623 - 701) that is the book's major strength. As the back of the book stated, "One of the first books to approach this subject from a 'personnel standpoint,'..." To date, no other source attempts to catalog a veritable who's who of R & B vocal group personnel in alphabetical order and the groups they sang with. That's why I bought the book.Thumbing through the first 621 pages shows the depth of the subject. As Rosalsky stated, ",...this book...presents, in one volume, the group's place of origin, brief biography, and...their discography (when available)." Actually, I would describe the "biographies" as mere thumbnail sketches. I gave this book 3 stars. Why not more? Because I discovered errors in some discographies and biographies. The bottom line. I applaud Rosalsky for his research and dedication to the music. His book is a welcome addition to my library. I use Rosalsky's book for scholarly, academic reference and research. It is not a book that I would recommend for first timers. To the generalist, the beginner, the first timer "testing the waters" into the world of rhythm 'n' blues vocal groups' literature, may I recommend Jay Warner's Da Capo American Singing Groups: A History 1940 - 1990. Why? Warner separates vocal groups by decade making it easier for the first timer to transition. His biographies are somewhat longer and more detailed. Both authors use similar formats - biography accompanied with the group's discography. Rosalsky's book is for the serious collectors and professionals.

This was a Christmas gift from my son and his family. Great, great book.
