This book is about innovation, full stop, as much as it is about innovation in the legal procession. Want to understand where the legal profession is heading and changing? This book provides strategic insight regarding answers to that question. Although published in 2012, it is relevant through 2020 and many of the early observations and predictions in the book have begun to occur between now and when the book first was published. I think it is particularly useful for General Counsel and senior corporate/organizational in- house lawyers to understand, develop and effectively and efficiently deploy multi-sourced legal services for their client organizations.

Tomorrow's legal world bears little resemblance to that of the past, according to Richard Susskind in this book. The next two decades will bring more changes to legal institutions and lawyers than have the last two centuries. While traditional job opportunities for young lawyers are diminishing, a whole range of exciting new legal occupations will soon be created.First, the bad news. The changes in the legal profession coinciding with the global recession are here to stay. Even if and when the global economy recovers, the three main drivers of change will not be going away:* The "more for less" challenge, in which companies have been putting pressure on their general counsel to cut legal budgets by 30 to 50 percent* Liberalisation, which is allowing people who are not qualified as lawyers to provide particular types of legal services* Information technology, which is becoming increasingly sophisticated so that computers can perform tasks that previously required skilled lawyersTo cope with the "more for less" challenge, law firms have tried charging less and alternative fee arrangements, but these efforts fail to achieve the cost reductions demanded by clients. The only two viable strategies, according to the author, are the efficiency strategy (which finds ways of cutting the costs of legal service) and the collaboration strategy (which involves clients sharing the costs of particular legal services). These strategies will require the breaking down of legal services into standard parts and custom parts, with the standard parts being commoditised and outsourced, in-sourced or computerised.Courts will also experience radical changes, as access-to-justice issues are resolved not through higher levels of funding but through greater use of information technology. We can expect to see a whole range of online legal services including virtual courts and online dispute resolution. There will be new types of legal jobs, such as legal knowledge engineers, legal technologists, legal project managers, and online dispute resolution practitioners.As with any predictions of the future, those relating to the immediate future based on currently observable trends are more likely to be accurate than those relating to the more distant future. Nonetheless, I found this to be a fascinating and easy-to-read book, which should be of great interest to anyone involved in law firm management.

This was the book that started me doing so much further reading about what is going on now and the future for my profession. It was a good starting place and kind of the foundation all the additional knowledge I have gained as I have continued to read on this subject.

Good book. Lacks sophisticated or complex arguments and is redundant at times. However, the basic concepts are well described.

This book was solid in its approach and method. However, it's substance lacked. Instead Susskind seemed to take an outline of a much better argument with more substance and put it in this book. There are times when Susskind sounds like a fortuneteller (or doomsayer depending on your predilection) when he is predicting the future. It's good to have his arguments in the back of your mind, but I wouldn't significantly shift my professional plans based on what he says in here.

I am using this book as a text for a Future of Law Practice class. It is written by noted commentator Richard Susskind who frequently speaks and writes on the topic as he has done for many years. It is a great way to get thinking about how the delivery of legal services is changing or will need to change. The book is focused on the large civil lawyer firms, so those interested in legal aid and criminal law will need to supplement this book with other sources. Overall, a worthwhile read from a long term expert on the topic.

This is the story of a man who, like Nat Turner, Marcus Garvey, and Malcolm X, is a complex yet seminal hero in the history of African American emancipation. Denmark Vesey was a charasmatic ex-slave--literate, professional, and relatively well-off--who had purchased his own freedom with the winnings from a lottery. Inspired by the success of the revolutionary black republic in Haiti, he persuaded some nine thousand slaves to join him in a revolt. On a June evening in 1822, having gathered guns, and daggers, they were to converge on Charleston, South Carolina, take the city's arsenal, murder the populace, burn the city, and escape by ship to Haiti or Africa. When the uprising was betrayed, Vesey and seventy-seven of his followers were executed, the matter hushed by Charleston's elite for fear of further rebellion. Compelling, informative, and often disturbing, this book is essential to a fuller understanding of the struggle against slavery.

Although much of the evidence about Denmark Vesey's revolt was destroyed, David Robertson rolled with what he had and produced a plausible account of what happened in Charleston, SC. After reading this book, I went to Charleston for the second time and saw the city in a different light. Back in the day, the city was not quaint or picturesque; it was hell for black people, slave and free. After reading this, I better understand why Mother Emanuel Church was a target of racial hate, and I want to read more about Denmark Vesey. Kudos to David Robertson.

Author takes what little we know about Bessy and lays the unarticulated pieces of a historical puzzle out for us to draw useful inferences about the meaning and utility of Veseys model of resistence.Authors let's his whiteness get in the way at the end when surmising the internal narrative of black contemporary inhabitants of Veseys landscape in charleston. Waxing nostalgic wasn't necessary or intellectually honest, just a good reminder of the need for more eyes on this story.

Got this book for my husband and he has read it twice

Very informative and relevant about Charleston. Denmark Vesey and his army of enslaved and free men of color were involved in the AME Church in Charleston where a bible study group were murdered recently by a racist white man. This gives an intense look at the history of slavery and racism in the USA.

Fabulous read, every parent should have their child read this book and every parent should read this book. It gives you a smile of Hope and Redemption that not everyone was passive. Even if they didn't make it. Hallelujah for those who tried God bless.

This was a very interesting history of a man and event I had never heard of before. I now wonder why. The author does an excellent job of moving the thinking about the event to modern times.

A lot of history is stored in this book, anyone who thought slaves were content and happy with their condition because they were housed and fed by others should read the book. How could human beings treat another human so savagely because of their skin color, then use the Bible for justification should read Vesey.

Now listen to me, I have had couples therapy, individual, and group; but this book makes sense of all I ever learned about myself and other people. NO JOKE. I picked up this book as a way to understand the behavior of someone close to me, and I was amazed at how much of it I could apply to myself. The book offered so much insight into people and their behaviors. I have recommended this book to many people and have even bought it as a gift. This book is written in a more clinical way, perhaps not readily consumed by the masses, but I found it to be much more insightful and "helpful" than any self-help book I've ever read. About the Author

Andrea S. Kramer ("Andie") and Alton B. Harris ("Al") are married and former law partners. As a woman lawyer in a particularly male-dominate practice area, I cannot over-emphasize how relevant the advice in this book is. For nearly a decade, I have watched men say and do things that, if said or done by me, would be viewed as "too much" or, at best, "intense." Men, on the other hand, tend to get praise for the exact same speech contents and, often, patterns. Unlike a number of books on women in the workplace recently, that Andie's husband, Al, co-wrote this gives it a unique spin by providing the viewpoint of a senior male lawyer on women in the legal workplace. That, and the myriad examples from Andie's long career in (also) a very male-dominated practice area are two of several characteristics of this book that set it apart from similar volumes.Far from a book that's just for lawyers, this is a book that any woman or person dealing with women (so, presumably, just about everyone) in corporate America needs to read. These communication issues arise in all types of workplaces, and progressing away from the negative examples will benefit all businesses, regardless of field, because it will permit them to learn to absorb ideas from all members of the team. This open dialog almost surely has to be a positive for not only employee satisfaction, but for the bottom line, as exchanges of better and more ideas can only lead to better and more innovation.

One of my young mentees recently complained to me that her annual review included a criticism that she was not "nurturing enough" of her male direct reports. She wondered if a man would be dinged with the same words. I immediately recommended Breaking Through Bias to her. Finally, someone said what needed to be said about how discriminatory stereotypes affect our promotions, pay, reviews and careers. For so many years, women lawyers simply doing their jobs was characterized as "aggressive" or "bitchy", while men "behaving" the same way were called "effective" or "strong". Thank you Andrea Kramer and Alton Harris for this superb book on communication which I wish I had access to 35 years ago at the beginning of my legal career. The specificity of the teachings in this most valuable handbook is so useful. Lawyers, executives and any woman climbing the steps in the business world will find this book a must have. I will assign it to all of my law students, men and women, and hope this next generation of business professionals will learn how words influence careers.

With a daughter who just was sworn in, I thought this would be the perfect gift for a young female lawyer. I have been in and around lawyers and law firms for better than 44 years, and have watched the ranks of women increase from nearly nonexistent to dominant roles in private firms and the public sector. I have known enough women attorneys to know the road to success is littered with potholes and pedants and pompous partners."Breaking Through Bias" provides wonderful and practical advices on how to navigate what is still a male-dominated profession at the top levels.And the authors have made this readable, not preachy. Every young lawyer--male or female--should read this insightful book. And it wouldn't hurt the managing partners to digest the wisdom here.

There are a lot of books written about this topic, but none of them that I have read (or seen, for that matter) are as practical or as well-structured as this one -- nor have I seen anything on this topic written by a man and woman together. Although the book focuses on communication techniques in a business setting, I actually thought the application of these techniques is much broader.My favorite aspects include:- The end of each chapter lists USEFUL (not just fluffy) "take-aways," giving readers the tools they need to apply the information described in each chapter. Each one is like a "to do" list of things to try.- Vignettes appear throughout the book that describe real-life situations where one of the authors encountered someone (typically in a mentoring context) dealing with the issues raised in that chapter.- The authors confess and address their own challenge and struggles with different biases. I was so impressed with how honest and authentic they are about their experience. That added so much to the value of the book, without being overwhelming.- Although I'm not an academic (and I don't think the authors are either), I respect the amount of research and analysis that went into this book. There are numerous quotations to academic journals -- not just other business advice-filled memoirs.- This book addresses some significant issues that are usually otherwise avoided, including discussing stereotypes that women have against other women and bullying.Things I wish the book included:- A workbook to go with it or a guided journal to help track progress and growth in each area.- Discussion questions for reading this in a group setting - I think this would be great to use for coaching/mentoring groups or corporate book clubs with a professional theme.- Expanded discussions about parenthood in the workplace, and more of the male perspective (most of the other chapters were pretty even, but the "Work and the Rest of Your Life" chapter seemed more focused on the issues that mothers face.- Some of the quizzes referenced in the "Key Takeaways" part at the end of each chapter - or just one website with links to all of them. Some of them looked really interesting, but it was a struggle to type in the long addresses.Overall, I an easy but valuable read - you could get through this on a plane (I did!) and finish it being inspired, with a roadmap of practice advice to try.

Fantastic textbook, actually used for the Master Gardener training program in NC. It covers ALL areas of gardening, from foundational soils, integrated pest management, lawns (warm and cool season), trees, fruits, vegetables, natives, propagation and much, much more. Lots of color photos, FAQ's, case studies, helpful charts and tables. Most importantly, it covers the widely differing growing zones within NC, from the mountains to the coastal plain. This book would also be of value to those in VA, SC, and GA as well.

The information in this book is all available for free on the Extention website, but I find it much easier to use textbook-like materials in paper book form. The book, so far, is easy to read and informative. I'm looking forward to marking it up and dog-earing the heck out of it.

As a Wake County, NC master gardener, this is the book our classes were taught from. Many of our guest speakers were the NC State University professors that were involved in writing this text. I purchased this Top 10 guide for a recent, last minute business trip to Rome. But a little backstory...my husband and I visited Rome about 7 years ago and at that time I had also purchased the Top 10 guide. Both then and now, the guide was great distilling a lot of possibilities into the important ones...and yet you can still dig a little deeper to find other things to do. I just love the concise-ness, the information and that it's well organized and easy to navigate. It also includes a foldout map that I've begun using with great success.I wasn't sure if my guide from 7 years ago would still be accurate so I decided to buy the latest version. I was impressed to see that the Top 10 list did have a change and there was definitely new/updated information. That being said, I would have been fine to use my old guide, but would definitely double check hours, prices, etc.

Indispensable informative highly portable guide which made a huge difference in organizing and navigating my recent week in Rome. Incredible value for the price. Especially loved the recommended walking routes with highlighted sights in the various areas of the city. The guide is exceptionally well organized, easy to use, with excellent recommendations about sights, museums, restaurants and cafes. One thing that could be improved, the maps for each area use small numbers for different categories such as shops, sights, etc., which are circled in varied but sometimes too similar colors that can be hard to distinguish. I use these guides for every city I've gone to that they've had them for, and have never been disappointed. Great souvenir and reminder of the trip after returning too. Thank you DK!!
