At first, I did not enjoy this book as much as its predecessor. It seemed more of a Willow monologue. However, it finally developed into an interesting tale.

I have to agree with the negative reviews. This is my fourth read in the series and I really enjoyed the previous ones. It is just so “wordy”. It was like wading through treacle. So many random allusions to topical movies and events especially the vampire movies. I had to google both dogs names to see what they meant! I am ploughing my way through. I wrote the following WhatsApp msg to my published writer daughter. This leads on to a random conversation. Word count? How does any of this drive the story forward? I wonder whether Debbie thought that as readers had enjoyed the earlier books, she had to write Willow’s story and of course the full-blown Alzheimer’s illness. My mother had vascular dementia, and I’m an only child whom she did not recognize even if I had dyed my hair pink. Disappointing and boring. I am 3/4 of the way through and am hoping it’s going to pick up some pace. I have just finished Chapter 24, which has to be the most boring chapter out. Only 15 more to go.

Willow Longbottom works at the cafe part-time, and her own cleaning business, plus she cares for her mother, Lynnie, who has Alzheimer’s disease which is a full-time job. Willow has 3 half siblings but none are involved in Lynnie’s care until this book.Willow becomes reconnected with a boy that she met many years ago when she takes on a cleaning job at Briarwood. Willow has a chance at love but is she wise enough to take it?

Another excellent book by Debbie Johnson about life at the Comfort Food Cafe. As with all the previous books about the Comfort Food Cafe this one is a winner. I love how she weaves the lives of all the characters together in all the books so you feel like you know them, almost as if you are there with them. I can not wait until the next book in the series comes out! ☺

I was so excited to receive this book and read it, that I made myself a big lot of Tea and just sat down to read, in fact no one got fed, my dogs did not get walked and no housework got done. I laughed, cried, cheered and danced while reading this book. As with all of the Comfort Food Cafe books, this book left me feeling warm, fuzzy and happy. I do so hope that there will be other Comfort Food Cafe books as I believe that both Auburn and Van have their own stories to tell.

I've been so excited to learn Willow's story and was not disappointed. Knowing the issues she has with Lynnie throughout the other three books I knew it would be heartbreaking in some ways. Alzheimer's is an unforgiving disease and Ms. Johnson did a great job showing the anguish of losing someone you love to it. Willow's struggles to find herself and to truly love life were ones everyone can relate to. Tom was a fantastic addition to the Bradbury bunch and rounded out the picture we have of Willow. Of course it's always nice to see the whole gang in action whether rallying around their own or welcoming the new into the fold. And bless Big Edie - her wisdom shines in each book but I thought it was particularly well timed in this story.

I fell in love with this book... the Characters, the Village, the BFF's one can depend on, the Dogs, the Storyline... Everything about it! I want to move there & have them All as friends! They were So recognizable in a Real People way! It was also relatable because my own Mum has dementia, so Lynnie's problems were definitely recognizable.I love Debbie Johnson's style of writing so much that I've purchased every book She's written & they're now All on my Kindle & my phone. I've also driven all of my female family members & female friends crazy, by bugging them to get this book & Will Not give up until they're all reading it, lol! I Just might have to start a Book Club & now I can't Wait to open the first page of the next Book!

Another delightful read from Debbie Johnson. Having read a few back to back thrillers I was ready for a change and this proved to be a lovely sorbet in between readings. Debbie draws you in with the characters and her books always leave me smiling.

Couldn't put it down for the first half, then the protagonists start making choices that make absolutely no sense. Took weeks to finish something I read in days previously.

The Providence of Fire is everything I wanted from a sequel and more. This definitely took pretty much all the slight problems I had with the first book and rectified it. Although this book did suffer from a roughly slow start, once we got about a 1/3 of the way through it took off at a break neck speed.I have to say the best thing about this series, hands down, is the world building. Brian Staveley has created such a complex, yet intriguing world all at the same time. This book especially dived so deep into the mythology of the world, it was amazing. From learning more about the Csestriim, to the leaches, to the gods, everything was engrossing. He didn't just throw all of this information at you either. It was sprinkled throughout the entire story and you were informed when you needed to be.The characters are the next best thing. First I just wanted to say that Adare had her time to shine in this novel. She went from having only like 5 chapters in the last book to actually being a true part to the three main characters of the story next to her brothers. Each story arc that involved one of the siblings was impeccable. The development was top notch and since this book isn't very action driven, the character development really helped this story be amazing. These three siblings went on such a journey and they all ended up very different people by the end of this novel.Lastly the story itself starts off fairly slow, it is pretty much a beginning that tries to get each character to their starting destination. Once all that happens the plot really kicks in. I found it hard to put this book down when I was reading it. Brian Staveley also knows how to write some intense final moments. Those last a hundred pages or so were stressful.I am really excited to see how this is all wrapped up. I believe Staveley has already laid a solid foundation and it should be quite interesting to see where are characters end up in the end!

When I first finished this book, it took me several hours to even begin to write down my feelings. More than a year later, and I still don’t have the words necessary to begin to do justice to this series.I struggled with the review for The Emperor’s Blades, partly because fantasy is my home in genre reading, but mostly because I had no idea how my mere words could stand up to the beauty and majesty that was created by Brian Staveley. I face a similar, or worse, problem now. In The Emperor’s Blades I fell in love with the Malkeenians and their world. I walked with them every step of their struggle, journey, surprise, and betrayal. InProvidence of Fire I was taken several (hundred) steps further. We see so much more of the wide world in this book, so much more of the tapestry is filled in. The travels of our main characters take us to the far reaches of the kingdom, and beyond. Every step taught us something new about the world, and about the people in it. I always had such a beautiful sense of place while reading. I could see the steppes, feel the heat from the Everburning Well, taste the glacial water, the smell of smoke wafted to my nose as I read. Every single word, description and scene pulled me further in and immersed me.As I traveled with the characters I’ve grown to love so much, I was present as they faced impossible odds, terrifying obstacles, and painful decisions, along with the occasional glorious victory. I can’t say much about the actual journey that is taken, the twists and turns, the compelling cases presented. Suffice it to say that I was on the edge of my seat, never sure what to believe, never sure who – if anyone – I could trust. I began repeating a litany to myself of ‘Trust No One’. I’m not sure, even now, if I’ve been fooled once, twice, or many, many times. I have theories on top of theories, speculations that I can barely piece together, and hopes – oh so many hopes – for the third book, for everyone in these pages that has come to mean so much to me.And there are so many characters I’m invested in. Valyn, Kaden, and Adare continue to be the primary POV characters; the ones that we’re following on this mission to save the empire, their family, and their people. As I rushed through the pages of this book I was surprised – though I’m not sure why – at how much I was invested in all three of them. Though I fretted every time I left one, I was immediately anxious to see what was going on with the next. I struggled next to these three as they made decisions that weren’t simply between ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ but between ‘wrong’ and ‘less-wrong’. Sometimes there was no good answer. There’s a quote in the book that I think encapsulates everything all three struggle with:It had been a long time since he’d felt as though he had a true choice…each decision looked like the wrong one now, but at the time they hadn’t seemed like decisions at all. Instead of contemplating a series of forking paths, [he] felt as though he’d been racing a treacherous track, just a half step ahead of his foes, no time to look either back or forward. It’s not just the Malkeenians, but people on all sides of the conflict that have difficult choices to make. Even when I railed against some of the decisions made, I understood why they were being made. It seems a long time since I’ve been able to say that there are at least a dozen additional characters that I’m truly invested in. Pyrre, Rampuri Tan, Ran il Tornja, Triste, Gwenna, Talal, Laith, Annick and a few new ones that I won’t name and risk spoiling anyone’s surprise. Each of them has found a place in – if not my heart, then my mind. I can’t stop thinking about all of them.Brian Staveley weaves beauty with his words, ensnaring the senses and filling the surrounding air with the world he’s created. I’m in awe of his ability and I look forward to everything to come in his career. Most especially, right now, the third book in the Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne series.

While the first book in the series was promising, this second installment was a massive disappointment. I found myself skimming page after page to find out if anything of consequence had occurred and what little did was improbable to say the least. The three main protagonist seemed childish and lost. Page after page finds them just stumbling along from one unrealistic scenario to another. I won't waste my time on money on any future books in the series.

I almost quick reading several times but slogged through to the end. I wish I hadn't.There is more gore and relentless pain and suffering in this book than any ten others I've read. Why so much? There was a tremendous amount of filler scene descriptions BD angst in the characters minds. I will not read the last book.

Adare, Valyn and Kaden all have been set on different paths by their father. Now with his death, they each use the skills they have to try to unravel the plot to end their family's ruling of the Unhewn Throne. This book took a bit to develop. The first 200 pages were a little slow and the plot took awhile to wind up. But once the build-up was completed, the story took on a pace that was breathtaking and lived up to the promise of the first book. And the ending? Leaves you wanting so much more in the best way possible! This is a great fantasy series. I would give it easily a 4.5 star rating. The characters are complicated and the story takes you to unexpected places. I can't wait to read the third book.

A sober reflection on the state of the US and the world by the most knowledgeable political intellectual I know of.

Chomsky writes for a far too narrow audience. One has to imagine that he is writing only for his revenue source. His arguments are akin to finding fault with somebody burping inadvertently - spurious and silly and more than occasionally, implausible. It is no challenge to find fault with anything at all especially so if you exhibit a rigid, hardened sense of your own view.To call him anarchist is to malign Bakunin.

So much in this book is not to be read in mainstream media.I would recommend thus book to anyone who wants to know what is going on in many parts to the world, and about the role the US plays in each of the mentioned countries.

Noam is my favorite author when it comes to research, facts and a critical mind. Short and to the point.

It's Noam Chomsky and his insight. No more needs to be said.

The knowledge, backed up with accurate assessment of the causal effects. Thoroughly engaging from a global perspective.

This a great book, which I'm gifting to my very thoughtfully engaged son.

excellent scholarship and accuracy. tells it like it is. read it and weep...fd

The authors wrote better than they knew. My own experience is that reverse engineering is at least 20% of a typical software engineer's typical day. It's the study that a developer puts towards understanding a system well enough to make necessary changes, rediscovering enough about the system to enable the task at hand. The authors addressed their book to specific re-engineering projects, as isolated events, but they really wrote about the everyday life of almost every programmer. As Johnson points out in the foreword, much if the information has an "everybody knows that" feel about it. I found a few new tips or new phrases, but mostly I found a clear, systematic organization of facts and techniques that are widely applied. The authors' arrangement of known techniques makes them especially valuable, much the way an arrangement of ordinary playing cards can become a valuable hand in poker.Among other things, these authors are the first to convince me that software metrics can be a net gain to a developer. My own, sad exposure to metrics has been normative, a stick wielded blindly in the name of misunderstood "quality". This book shows how to use metrics in a constructive, exploratory way. The complexity (or whatever) scores are not the output of the process, they are intermediate results to be discarded as soon as they've pointed the way to the real problems.I found only a very few points to disagree with. For example, the authors point out pros and cons of prototypes, but missed the biggest danger of a working prototype: that, no matter what caveats are given, it can be mistaken for a real system. Over-eager clients or managers driven by a false sense of efficiency may demand that the developers just add a feature or two (usually, system's entire capability) and ship it tomorrow. Elsewhere, the authors noted that converting from a command line interface to a GUI can be jarring for users, but did not point out that a GUI can provide a command entry field, at least as a transition aid. I would also have been happier with a longer discussion in ch.10 of type checking - I agree with the authors completely, but feel that they missed some common variations on the type-testing theme and reasons for it.The authors suggested using dot plots for describing similarity between bodies of code, a representation I first saw in genome analysis. It strengthens the image of a program as a living, evolving thing, but also suggests that other genomic tools could possibly have value in understanding software. Programs are really just long strings, and geneticists have a huge box of subtle tools for analyzing long strings. Mating of the two fields could spawn a new generation of techniques for extracting information from existing software.I recommend this book very highly. It's thorough, practical, and readable. It addresses software maintenance - i.e., most of the software industry - as a valuable task, worth serious study and investment in tools. A brief review can't do justice to the book's rich content. I hope you explore it for yourself.

If you are charged with reengineering a piece of software; if you are considering rewriting software; or even if you are trying to evaluate whether or not it is worth further effort in maintaining a piece of code: in all of these cases, read this book before you start. Not only will it give you tried and tested advice about the motivations for reengineering, should you then decide that reengineering is necessary, this book provides suggested approaches which will help structure your work and could save you valuable time and effort.Excluding an introductory chapter and an appendix, the book is divided into two sections: Reverse Engineering (Part 1, Chapters 2-5) and Reengineering (Part 2, Chapters 6-10). The first of these sections deals with analysing the code and seeks to answer the question: "Where does one start when presented with a large code base which is a candidate for reengineering?" The patterns presented here help one decide how (or whether) to proceed, help establish confidence in the course of action chosen and give guidance for those worrisome first steps into the unknown. The second section deals with the reengineering itself: testing, migration and restructuring of the code base. Testing ensures that what is re-created reproduces (to the extent desired) the effects produced by the original code base. How do you know that your changes haven't broken the code? Strategies for migration are clearly necessary since we want our new system to be used and evaluated as it is being reengineered. Finally the last three chapters in the book give good, solid, uncontroversial advice about the restructuring of object-oriented code.Presented in an easy-to-read style, the patterns presented in this book should give you a head start in your reengineering endeavours.

The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon, by David Grann

Review

“Suspenseful. . . . Rollicking. . . . Reads with all the pace and excitement of a movie thriller. . . . The Lost City of Z is at once a biography, a detective story and a wonderfully vivid piece of travel writing that combines Bruce Chatwinesque powers of observation with a Waugh-like sense of the absurd. Mr. Grann treats us to a harrowing reconstruction of Fawcett’s forays into the Amazonian jungle, as well as an evocative rendering of the vanished age of exploration.”—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times “Breathtaking. . . . Grann brings Fawcett’s remarkable story to a beautifully written, perfectly paced fruition. . . . Any writer who can breathe life into letters written by scientists in the early 1900s deserves more than a hat tip.”—The Los Angeles Times  “Brilliant. . . . Impressively researched and skillfully crafted. . . . Grann makes abundantly clear in this fascinating, epic story of exploration and obsession, [that] the lethal attraction of the Amazon mystery remains strong.”—The Boston Globe “A smart biographical page-turner.”—USA Today “Grann escapes death and tracks down Z, giving the reader the kind of Indiana Jones kicks best experienced vicariously.”—Details “A riveting, exciting and thoroughly compelling tale of adventure.”—John Grisham “Thoroughly researched, vividly told. . . . Grann recounts Fawcett’s expeditions with all the pace of a white-knuckle adventure story. . . . A thrill ride from start to finish.”—The Washington Post  “The story of Z goes to the heart of the central questions of our age. In the battle between man and a hostile environment, who wins? A fascinating and brilliant book.”—Malcolm Gladwell “A spellbinding tale that produces fresh surprises around each turn. . . . An amazing story.”—Dallas Morning News “A fascinating yarn that touches on science, history, and some truly obsessive personalities.”—Entertainment Weekly “There is something about Fawcett’s spirit and self-assurance that captivates. . . . To read The Lost City of Z is to feel grateful that Grann himself bothered to set out for the Amazon in search of the bones of an explorer whose body was long ago reclaimed by the jungle.”—Christian Science Monitor “In a hyperconnected and exhaustively charted world, here is a revelation about wildness and the mad desire to plunge into it. . . . Unfathomably riveting. . . . Grann wildly delivers the goods.”—GQ “A blockbuster tale of adventure.”—New York Observer “Marvelous. . . . [Grann] combines a colorful narrative of Fawcett’s early life, military career, jungle treks, theories and even conversations with a biography of an extraordinary man and an overview of the last great and highly competitive age of exploration.”—Bloomberg News “A blood-stirring reading experience.”—The Denver Post “A deeply satisfying revelation. . . . What could be better—obsession, mystery, deadly insects, shrunken heads, suppurating wounds, hostile tribesmen—all for us to savor in our homes, safely before the fire.”—Erik Larson “What makes Mr. Grann’s telling of the story so captivating is that he decides not simply to go off in search of yet more relics of our absent hero—but to go off himself in search of the city that Fawcett was looking for so heroically when he suddenly went AWOL.”—Simon Winchester, The Wall Street Journal “Fast-paced adventure. . . . Grann delights us with the lure of obsession under a canopy of trees.” —Cleveland Plain Dealer “Absorbing and fair-minded. . . . In restoring a life that history has swallowed from general view, and vindicating a crackpot theory, Mr. Grann has also exposed the toll that explorers often took on those who loved or depended on them.”—Richard B. Woodward, The New York Times “An engrossing book, whose protagonist could outmarch Lara Croft and out-think Indiana Jones. . . . It’s almost enough to make you reach for a backpack.” —The Daily Telegraph (London) “A riveting adventure-mystery in the tradition of Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, said to be inspired by Fawcett.” —The Toronto Star “Perfect for armchair travelers and readers with fond childhood memories of books recounting tales of adventure in the dark wild. . . . What [Grann] found should help change how we think about the Amazon. . . . Read it, shiver with delight and thank your lucky stars you’re never going to get as close to a candirú as Fawcett and Grann did. (Look it up on Wikipedia, if you dare.)” —Richmond Times-Dispatch “Thrilling. . . . What a story. . . . The beauty is that as incredible as it is, it’s true.” —Daily News “Outstanding. . . . A powerful narrative, stiff lipped and Victorian at the center, trippy at the edges, as if one of those stern men of Conrad had found himself trapped in a novel by García Márquez.”—Rich Cohen, The New York Times Book Review “Did Grann find the lost city? . . . It’s worth reading every page of this marvelous book to find out.”—Houston Chronicle “Grann is no hard-as-nails explorer, and his self-deprecating personal narrative . . . serves as a comic counterpoint to the superhuman exploits of Fawcett. Grann may not be able to hack the wilderness very well, but as a storyteller he’s first-rate.” —Outside “Grann has an extraordinary sense of pacing, and his scenes of forest adventure are dispatched in passages of swift, arresting simplicity. . . . A splendid, suspenseful book.”—Bookforum “With this riveting work, David Grann emerges on our national landscape as a major new talent. His superb writing style, his skills as a reporter, his masterful use of historical and scientific documents, and his stunning storytelling ability are on full display here, producing an endlessly absorbing tale about a magical subject that captivates from start to finish. This is a terrific book.” —Doris Kearns Goodwin “A thrilling yarn. . . . What [Grann] finds is what makes The Lost City of Z so gratifying, and in the end he, and we along with him, find ourselves stunned by what Percy Fawcett discovered.” —The Oregonian “Grann paints a vivid picture of the final days of trail-blazing, Earth-bound grand exploration, before airplanes and radios began stripping the mystery from the unknown parts of the world.” —The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) “Meticulously researched and spellbinding. . . . Reads like a cross between an Indiana Jones adventure and a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel. . . . Gripping.” —The Ottawa Citizen “Irresistible. . . . At once a biography of Fawcett, a history of the era of exploration, a science book on the nature and ethnography of the Amazon and a thrilling armchair adventure. . . . [It] has everything to fire the imagination: Romance, nostalgia, bravery, monomania, hardship, adventure, science, tragedy, mystery.” —South Florida Sun Sentinel “The Lost City of Z is meticulously researched, riveting and horrifying, guided by a core mystery that seems unimaginable and an author driven into the depths of the jungle by his daring to imagine it.” —Philadelphia City Paper “Absorbing. . . . A wonderful story of a lost age of heroic exploration.” —The Sunday Times (London) “Tantalizing. . . . Grann gives us a glimpse of the vanished age of exploration [as well as] a suspenseful, often very funny account of his own trek as a complete amateur into the ‘green hell’ of the Amazon. . . . Immensely entertaining.” —The Gazette (Montreal) “Thankfully, for those of us who secretly live and breath for the swashbuckling adventure tale, every now and then a book comes along that renews our faith in the epic quest narrative, its ability to inform and enlighten even as it feeds our most primal need for dramatic amusement. [The Lost City of Z] succeeds tremendously in these pursuits.” —The Globe and Mail (Canada)

I purchased and read this book several years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I am excited that the movie is coming soon. But, before that, I'm going to read the book again!

I loved reading this book because of its diversity. You get a well rounded history from multiple accounts of the many cursed expeditions into the Amazon. The crazy men who dared to do it (both present and past), violent tribal peoples (though you understand why they're so hostile to foreigners), the nearly impassable Amazon terrain, the odd and bizarre creatures that reside their, and in the end, a plausible archaeologically based theory behind why people thought there was a large rich city once in the Amazon. Like all things, people's imaginations run wild, but the author also brings you back down the earth with the reality of the jungle which left me with the overall conclusion that these grandiose theories of a Lost City of Z were really just grand exaggerations of much more practical evidence of a fairly developed, but long lost, past civilization. Some people criticize the book for only getting to the final expedition at the very end of the book. But I believe this criticism is unwarranted. You can't just jump into the final expedition without getting the backstory and context of the people, place, and time. I feel the author did a marvelous job of jumping around and pacing the book, so that when you get to the final expedition, you're well versed in the context and prepared to understand why things went down the way they did.Fantastic read, and I shall keep this book as a permanent fixture in my collection. Too bad I only got it in paperback... dang.

I found this book interesting in many ways. It was easy to read since it touched many subjects that are familiar to me. The book covers historic facts of the Victorian age and its influence in the world but specially South America and the countries of Bolivia and Brazil whose Amazonian region was and is difficult to explore or study. It is well balanced since the book covers many areas that help understand different points of view of previous times compared to present times. I found answers to questions that come up as you read this book. For instance, to refer to the tribes that populate the Amazonian forests as savages, made me question who is anyone to judge, specially after the atrocities of WWI, described in the book as well as all the inhuman spectacle of WW2. Also, it explains what was happening in the areas related to the fields he got to be involved in like archeology and the discovery of Machu Pichu which may have influenced him.Fawcett’s motivations could have been banal if they were glory or becoming famous but he showed an ethical position not usual in his time which was to approach the indigenous people in a non violent way, trying not to use arms and ordering to drop arms even if danger was felt. He would raise his hands and confront the Indians which gave him good results since he got to be treated as a sort of friend. This respectful behavior, considering the times, was something positive to take in account when trying to define Fawcett's personality which could show his humanity, something to learn from him. Now, consider that Indiana Jones is partly based in the real life of Percy Fawcett and P.F. is one of the characters of one of his movies; however, Indiana Jones had no problem in shooting for entertainment.Having lived in Bolivia and having done some exploration myself I may have a different take to this adventure. To start, one of Fawcett's motivation was as normal as to answer why people climb mountains, the answer is,” because it's there". I have done hiking going from La Paz at 12000 ft. above sea level to about 15000 ft. and then down to the tropics of Yungas which is the start of the Amazonian jungle all along an Inca road which was partly well preserved considering hundreds of years of use. After getting familiar with this subtropical region, it happened that I read The mines of King Salomon and this book, cited in Grann's book as well, inspired me to go farther. My plan was to go to an uncharted area in the forest called Madidi, which is a national park now. My motivation was just to see what no one else has seen. I was able to enlist two university friends who seemed interested but who back down at the last minute. Next year I tried again but I had a sudden back ache problem. Going back to the book, Fawcett's intentions may have been to attain fame by finding not El Dorado but something like Machu Pichu which was “found” in 1911. He visited Cusco and Tiahuanacu and was able to marvel at the achievements of these civilizations. But destiny put him in the Bolivian jungle with the aid of the British government, it wasn't something that he was looking for but that opened his eyes and his innate explorer spirit. Before I even finished reading this book I was compelled to read about the original source, Percy Fawcett's own words, compiled in a book “Lost trail, lost cities” by Brian Fawcett, his son. By reading it, I found out that in his first trip he was hired by the Bolivian government, P. Fawcett does not mention Brazil in the first expedition which was actually work. Now, there are historical details that are not clear. The border problem between Bolivia and Brazil was already established in 1903 after a short war between these two countries and the result was the annexation of the Acre, an area of 190,000 square Kilometers (75,000 sq mls), more than ¾ the size of UK. By the way, something that this book could have in next edition is a better map, the map of Bolivia is not clear. There are details in the Fawcett's book that could have been part of Grann's book or even the movie, like the moment when, after departing La Paz, one of many mules P.F. had, runs away and that was the mule that had the $£1000 in gold he received as part of the payment from the Bolivian government, an interesting historical detail, a “jingling treasure” in the saddle bags. However, Fawcett explains that the mule was brought back by local people who he rewarded. P .F. describes foreigners by name but there is no mention of Bolivian dignitaries with the exception of the president of Bolivia who was taking matters with his own hands and who knew these lands very well. The region next to the Brazilian border bears his name, Pando.“All who have lived in these lands and learned to know them fell captive to their irresistible charm”, Fawcett writes as part of his reflexions. Is this one of the motives he kept coming back?

The best review I can give this fascinating read is that afterward, I had to read more about the land described in this book and the extraordinary people who would risk their lives just to see what's in there.I will not waste time with how insane and egomaniacal someone would have to be to bring their own inexperienced, though physically fit, son into a literal hell - knowing it is hell - and believe that through sheer force of will come out on the other side whole. Fawcett and his ilk are special breeds of men probably best experienced in small doses by society and most useful out conquering the wild unknown. Not that they are bad people, but they did not suffer fools who were not as willing or able to push through the pain. Leg broken? Walk it off.Still, the book is excellent, and the journey the author made to bring this fascinating figure to life was well worth the work. Kudos!
