This is a great textbook on working a room. On this particular subject it may be even THE ultimate textbook. Susan RoAne covered everything from exhibits via high school reunions to funeral services. Wow, what a tremendous experience! Susan was on schedule for more meetings than I changed diapers (and changed a lot of them).But this is not some boring textbook which can substitute for a soothing lullaby. Not at all. This book is packed with both fun and interesting stories. Most of them came directly from Susanâ€™s rich array of experiences. That makes the book far from the dreadful image of a textbook.First some areas where it may have fell short for some users. As a representative of a (relatively) young generation I found her explanations of different social platforms boring. I skimmed through these and went straight to more â€œmeatyâ€ parts. But someone in his sixties may feel exactly opposite.I also find the book a bit repetitive, but Iâ€™m not the kind of guy who shun from repetition. It helps to retain the lessons longer.Connecting is hard, but she makes it easySusan also writes vividly. When she admits that mingling and talking to strangers is hard, I wholeheartedly agree with her. I was a shrinking violet who transformed into a confident person, so I went through quite a lot. 30 months ago I couldnâ€™t say â€œHiâ€ to a stranger.When Susan explains how to make it happen, it sounds fun and easy. I vote for her methods. I verified everything she teaches; every trick from her arsenal, which I knew and used worked as she prescribed. And I got some interesting results too. Since â€œshrinking violetâ€ times I built a couple of deep friendships by starting conversations on a train to work. I also spoke with strangers about life-death issues.Working a room masteryBut it was just the introductory part of the book. From there the author goes into room-working and thatâ€™s where her mastery really shows. She has a knack for breaking high plane ideas into actionable items. Susan has also a tendency to make a list whenever possible. There are an enormous number of lists and action steps included. And after each chapter you will find a quick summary, again in bullet points or the form of list, which makes for easy reading.Itâ€™s really amazing how she was able to systematize and distill such intangible topic as human relationships.Her ideas comes down to common sense. You wonâ€™t find there any backbreaking manipulation techniques which can be mastered only by years of training. I appreciate that because of the following reasons: Common sense is nowadays uncommon I donâ€™t really know what common sense calls for in many situations; for example I have never been on reunion or a trade show.I loved Susanâ€™s advice on working virtual rooms. Iâ€™m not too bad in working them myself. Iâ€™ve been noticed by several people with 6 and 7 figure income businesses and obtained their help. I recognized in her advice my approach: just be genuine.Not one-read kind of a bookIâ€™m sure Iâ€™ll be going back to How to Work a Room time after time. The structure of book makes it easy to find just a particular kind of â€œroomâ€ and refresh the lesson in your mind. This book was suggested to me as someone who has struggled with shyness. Never cared much for these types of books and I will honestly say only about half of it was applicable to me. But the parts that I could connect with where good. A lot was pretty common sense based but I actually used some of the tips and found them helpful so I recommend this to anyone looking for a little help in the "being social" department

The best by a mile.Anyone familiar with Explorer's Guides to Maine or Vermont knows what kind of quality to expect here, but there's a catch. This particular guide IS getting a bit out of date.Here's the thing. New Hampshire is all about heritage tourism and outdoor exploration. Those things change very little over time, so the guide still has validity despite its age. Don't expect pricing and timing information to be up to date, but recommendations are still spot on. Historical and cultural contexts are still informative and entertaining.Despite a bit of age and a lack of flashy color photography, this is your best guide to the Granite State.

In some respects, New Hampshire has it all ways. Close enough to the I-95 corridor to be in range of Boston and readily accessible to travelers, but with a surprisingly vast hinterland of forests, lakes, mountains, and small towns, all likely to be interesting to the visitor willing to explore. This Explorer's Guide to New Hampshire is just the thing to find your way around the state. The contents are a very readable mixture of traditional travel narrative and the organized information bites that modern travelers have come to expect. Clear, easy to read, and well organized, like all of Christina Tree's Explorer's Guides. It would be great if an update could be made to the restaurants and inns, but the book is valuable as is. So much simpler taking this tome along on the trip than spending hours drifting on the web.

Best travel guide I have ever read. I liked it so much that I just ordered the Explorer's Guides to Maine and Vermont. The book has everyhing about New Hampshire: history, food, antique stores, farmers' markets, establishment hours, lodging, scenic drives, places off the beaten path, et al. I am hoping that my Vermont and Maine guides measure up because Ms Tree and Hamm have set a pretty high bar with this one. I will be visiting New Hampshire this fall for the foliage viewing and I am well versed in what New Hampshire has to offer. Well done!

I chose this book as I am considering making a move, not just taking a vacation. It gives me a sense of the variety of landscapes in New Hampshire. Until I find a book that is called, "Where to move to in New Hampshire", this is a good reference. It'a a start.

My 2 year old grandson loves all the Slide and Find Books. He especially loves trucks. So, this book was a given. I have purchased several of these books for him and he has loved them all.

Not my favorite of the Priddy books. Some of the pages donâ€™t make sense for a toddler. For example, on the page for â€œwho drives what?â€, they say a police officer drives a police tow truck. Hmm...maybe a bit advanced for the â€œages 1+â€ demographic the book is aiming at. that being said, my one year old loves opening and closing the slides.

Kids love books they can touch and move, so this one has been a hit over the years. So much so that we bought this one as a gift for another child. It is very colorful and teaches the names of lots of different trucks, colors, and drivers. It has 8 thick board pages and works in pairs so the left side of the book has full pictures and names of the trucks and the right side is divided into four "windows" with a name/color/picture/driver on the outside of the window and they slide it open to reveal the truck.

We got this book shortly after my twins turned one and they love it. They are now 16 months old and love to point to the pictures and have me name the different vehicles (luckily for me they are labelled). Each page has areas to slide and the boys love to slide them back and forth. Each page asks a different question on the top and then the slides help to answer the question. For example, one page is colors and another asks who drives each vehicle. It is definitely a book that can grow with my boys as they get older because they will be able to answer those questions later.I only gave it 4 stars because some of the slides are difficult to move even for me. Also like some other reviewers mentioned, when asking who drives each vehicle I wouldn't have guessed a police officer drives the tow truck.Overall this is a great book that my boys greatly enjoy.

Grandsons favorite book. Found a used one, already broken in so easy to slide covers to see picture underneath. We looked at that book forever till one of the sliders broke. Ordered a brand new one. New books sliders are too tight for him to slide by himself. And even with my help, sliders are pretty tight.

My toddler is obsessed with trucks, so he got this as a present from his aunt. He loves it! He enjoys pointing out the colors, drivers, and different vehicles. It's a decent sized book (big enough for me to see clearly, but small enough for a toddler's hands) and the pictures are great! The only flaw about it is that the "slide" spots are a little stiff and hard to push over sometimes... Other than that, we love this book!

Thought it would be a good book for 18 months. No. 1) Slides and tabs are very difficult. 2) Tries to include colors. . . just makes the book too busy. 3) Too complicated. There's better truck books out there. :-(

My kids both ages 3 and 2, boy and girl absolutely love this book!!! I too enjoy it. The photos are vibrant colors and have sliding covers and once the covers are slide down they reveal a photo of the related topic. These are durable and easy to wipe down if a spill occurs. Its a family favorite still daily and a great price for a great quality book!

When I ordered this book, I wasnâ€™t really aware that it was originally published in 1997. This is apparently the first book in a series about a band of brothers â€“ four men who have the unique type of rapport which normally only develops among men who have served together on the battlefields â€“ as these four men have during the war between England and France. Viscount Rawleigh (Rex) serves as our main guy in this first book of the series. I found his character extremely overbearing in his manner toward our heroine, Catherine Winters, a widow of good reputation who lives in a cottage in the small country village where Rawleighâ€™s twin brother, Claude, and his family make their home.When Rawleigh and two of his friends decide to rusticate at a house party given by Claude and his wife, Clarissa, Rex and Catherine are introduced for the first time. Rex thinks Catherine has been flirting with him because she mistakenly thought he was Claude and gave him a generous smile and curtsy when the party first traveled through the village. In part because Rex believes the lovely widow has been casting lures out to him, he immediately decides that he must have her as his plaything since he expects to be bored out of his gourd during the house party. Apparently Rex usually gets what Rex wants. Catherine knows how to say â€œnoâ€ but her circumstances are such that sheâ€™s 25 years old, is sexually attracted to Rex and since he will not leave her alone, continuing to pursue her after sheâ€™s denied his request to become his mistress, eventually finds herself responding to him by returning a couple of kisses. All this serves to further advance Rexâ€™s thoughts regarding her willingness to sleep with him and making him very angry to the point he considers her a â€œflirtâ€ and he actually calls her the â€œbâ€itch word. This misunderstanding, Rexâ€™s arrogance and lack of consideration for her reputation will have unintended results for Rex and Catherine.There is a mystery surrounding Catherine which is revealed over the course of the story. Long before the reveal, the reader will suspect that she was the victim of a romance gone wrong and that her family has cast her off. Sheâ€™s managed to carve out a life for herself by doing good deeds and enjoying a quiet and peaceful lifestyle, teaching music and sharing her baked goods with those in her village. In short, sheâ€™s learned to be content with what she has and no longer builds castles in the sky. That is until Rex comes into her world and everything comes crashing down including her good reputation among the villagers.I was filled with angst during much of this story and a bit of a nervous wreck as Rex and Catherineâ€™s relationship slowly grows into a more permanent one. There are some intriguing characters including the other three men who make up the band of brothers. Rexâ€™s twin brother, Claude, is a standout pure and simple and a man who is not afraid to stand up to his older brother even though Rex is more of the dominant character. Clarissa is a minor villain of the story and I wondered how long it would be before Claude would have to put her in her place. When that time comes, Claudeâ€™s character shines like pure gold.Once Claude has laid down the law, Rex picks up the standard and boldly does what needs to be done to protect Catherine. At some point, he redeems himself in my sight, especially when he begins to understand how his arrogance has resulted in harm to Catherine. I noticed one reviewer used the word â€œredemptionâ€ â€“ indeed, it is the operative word for Catherine must be redeemed and Rex must be the one to fulfill that service.

I honestly can't improve on the Publishers Weekly review so I'll just say this is a very touching and romantic story and it clearly demonstrates how the pettiness of small minded people can cause so much misery.Here's the real reviewFrom Publishers WeeklyAlthough Balogh's (Heartless) seamless, fairy-tale Regency lacks some of the complexity and period detail of her previous books, it nonetheless engages the reader with sharply drawn, likable characters. Lady Catherine Winsmore, a heroine of quiet courage, refused a forced marriage when rape left her with an illegitimate child. Exiled by her family, she poses as a young widow, Mrs. Catherine Winters. An innocent smile brings the unwelcome advances of another rake, the Viscount Rawleigh, Rex Adams. Rather than suffer from new scandal she accepts a loveless marriage to Rex. There are few twists or real subplots, and Catherine's problems aren't so much resolved as magically waved away by Rex. But what makes this book touching is its bittersweet portrayal of a victim wronged by her attacker and by society, and the compassion and trust that eventually redeem two lives

I've recently discovered this author and it's been a happy experience. Indiscreet is the first in a trilogy and centers on a young widow who has retired to the country and an aristocrat who wants her. Decidedly Austenesque in many of the character portrayals (the local vicar who is so effusive in his groveling to the local landowner made me grind my teeth), the main characters are complex, interesting, flawed and, after all, worth every minute spent with them. This is one that I'll read again and again...much like some Austen books. I'm looking forward to the next two books in the series and recommend this one without reservation.

This is a book you'll want to go back and re-read your favorite passages. Some of it is outstanding! I was definitely drawn into the story and about halfway into the book, when Rex and Catherine are forced to marry, I was really angry at him for forcing his attentions on her when she kept telling him to leave her alone. Granted, she sent him mixed signals by allowing him to kiss her, but she never wavered on not wanting it to go any further. He ultimately heeded her "no" and went away mad, but not before irrevocable damage was done to her reputation. Shame on him! His actions end up coming back as a major plot device with him making amends and them falling in love.Mary Balogh is like the queen of good endings. This book was initially hard for me to get into. By a quarter way into it I was enjoying the story and by halfway I couldn't put it down. By the time Catherine reveals the story of her past, I actually had tears in my eyes and was moved by her plight. Their eventual understanding of each other and his championing her showed Rex a hero worthy of that moniker. Great book, I might read it again.

If you love romance, give yourself this book. I have loved this series since I first read them 20 years ago. I am glad they have held up in the rereading . My views of Rex have changed since I first read this story I find him a much more sympathetic and engaging hero . I always found Catherine a remarkable heroine. It may be hard for today's young woman to understand how strong she was but the views of the 50s when I was young weren't very different than those of the Regency. I admired the way she created a useful life out of a wreckage.Treat yourself to this beautiful romance.
