I’m in grad school now and I don’t get much time for leisure reading, but this book has reminded me of why I love Young Adult fantasy…and then some. I didn’t read it just once, I read it TWICE because it was just that satisfying. In ACOMAF, we see Feyre faced with the shattered pieces of her heart and identity caused by what was done to her as well as by the decisions she made while “Under the Mountain” (in ACOTAR). Maas does an excellent job developing Feyre’s character in a believable way – one that worked really well with the storyline. Throughout the book, the reader goes on an emotional journey with Feyre as she grows into her power and demonstrates strength that comes from respecting herself and what she is now (a pretty damn strong High Fae) – an excellent thing for any young woman to read. I was also SO excited to see the twist on the Hades/Persephone-like plot (Rhysand/Feyre) that Maas weaved in there, not to mention the introduction of a pretty epic team fighting the bad guys together. Maas also does an excellent job in expanding the universe of this book. In summary, ACOMAF is emotionally charged, touching, and serious, but it is also funny and wildly entertaining. The ending leads me to believe that there will be a pretty IMPRESSIVE conclusion to the trilogy.Note to the parents: This book can get pretty steamy/descriptive in terms of romantic scenes. (I’m just alerting you if you are very cautious about the types of books/scenes you want your kids to read given their age range.) If it helps, I feel like the author was very purposeful in including those scenes, and if anything, I think things are described in a way that is healthier than what’s in a lot of teen fiction nowadays (ie: destructive relationships).

THIS BOOK IS AN ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE. Seriously, I've never been this ridiculously happy throughout an entire story.Feyre's character growth is incredible. I wasn't a huge fan of her in ACOTAR, but she really reminds me of Aelin in Heir of Fire here with how she learns to respect herself and shape her own future. Feyre developed so much incredible self-awareness, honesty, and bravery. Rhys supports her, but she doesn't grow through him (which is SO important). She became pretty badass by the end and she's now one of my favorite characters? Man, this book shocked the hell out of me so many times.I can't really summarize all these feels right now, so here's a list of the awesome:- The Court of Dreams/Rhysand's family- every. single. detail. of the Night Court (I expect amazing fan art)- answers & the insight into all of Rysand's previous actions- actual healthy relationships with communication (for friendships too)- how much Rhys supports and respects Feyre as an equal- the fact that this was never a love triangle!- Feyre leaves a toxic relationship for herself instead of another guy- awesome action scenes and pacing that never got slow- Feyre's POV stopped romanticizing Tamlin's controlling behavior from ACOTAR- Hades/Persephone retellings where Hades is the good guy are my favorite- how Feyre's sisters got worked into the plot- THAT ENDING aghhh it was painful but the next book will be amazingI've seen some concerns that this book might be too steamy for teens, but I really don't think it's a bad thing for teens to read about consent in an empowering relationship for a change. I have seen SO many unhealthy relationships in YA books that romanticize abusive & controlling guys who are attractive because they're threatening (??). Rhys turns out to be the complete opposite of that here. It was definitely more explicit than I thought was necessary, but I also think adults who shield teens from sex scenes have either forgotten what being a teen is like or truly don’t grasp the materials that teens see/read/live. Society has enough stuff that shames teen girls, so if they want to read this then let them see a strong female character going after the life & relationship that's healthiest for her.And before you ignore this book because of a potential love triangle or the risk that Rhysand's previous behavior would be considered acceptable, let me assure you that this book hightails it in the opposite direction. Maas is not condoning abusive relationships in any way -- quite the opposite.It's funny to look back at my review of ACOTAR last year where I said I'd be a way bigger fan of this series if the books dropped Tamlin and went to the Night Court. Hallelujah. I mean, I was somewhat into ACOTAR, but ACOMAF just became one of my all-time favorite books.

*spoilers ahead*I want to start off with how healthy Sarah J. Maas is writing Feyre. Healthy relationships are rare to find in YA. And after all the neglect from Tamlin, she realized her worth. It took her a little while to see her worth. And she only got to see her worth when she was away from the Spring Court, courtesy of Rhysand.Feyre was left in isolation for three months after the events in ACOTAR. Isolation leads to self-reflection and that's why she was still in agony and tortuous pain from her mind while living safely in the Spring Court. Her night terrors never went away because she had all this time to remember her ordeal.And then Rhysand comes into the picture. And he gave her nothing but choices, which in its own way is everything. She made friends and started living a healthy lifestyle. She was fixing herself because she saw more than just the suffocating walls of Tamlin's home. Rhysand knew she could only fix herself. He gave her that chance to become independent again. And if that's not the healthiest thing I've ever read in YA, then nothing is.Now that that's out of the way.RHYSAND.Holy Cauldron is he precious. He thinks so little of himself and it breaks my heart that he thinks that way. The most powerful High Lord in Pyranthian thinks he doesn't deserve happiness. After everything he endured Under the Mountain with Amarantha for fifty years. He deserves everything and more. He is so fragile. PROTECT HIM FEYRE.I have grown very attached to this series and I've learned that it's not safe to read in public because you will get aroused. So thank you Maas for that.5/5

This is a decent book for any athlete in any sport interested in improving their athletic habits and non-game activities to make them better all around. It is straightforward, has some interesting anecdotes and real-life examples, and easy enough to read for a young athlete learning on their own. The only downfall is that the e-version gets to be a little scattered and comes across as out of order, but I think that is a factor of the changeover to electronic. Some might find many activities boring or basic, but I feel like there is at least one thing from each chapter that could be a takeaway for longterm, habitual use.

My son plays for an ISHL team and the first time he applied some of the habits (Dont' ask me) he did much better. Now he is going to get into these habits.

For hockey players at any level, this is a great book for the mental preparation of the game. Pre-game Habits provides a lot of insight into how to get ready to play the greatest game going! A must read for any player and coach from Pee Wees to pros.

Wish we would have had this year's ago with our older children who play hockey. Great STUFF! We loved the section on visualization and breathing.

I only play beer league now and this book had tons of great ideas that have delivered results when only partially implemented making the game more fun. I play for the pure enjoyment and having better more consistent performances makes the game even more addicting. Nice straightforward read with great antidotal stories to explain various concepts which can be applied to not only hockey but other sports and life. I wish I had this book 30 years ago.

This is a must for serious hockey players from high school on up. It is a similar read as Hockey Tough. However this is a much easier read. Having coached for the last twenty years from youth to Junior this is invaluable information.

Which One Doesn't Belong? is a book of conversation starters around geometry.  Each page of the picture book gives readers 4 shapes and asks the questions, "Which One Doesn't Belong?"  I know this opener and love it and have used lots of the resources on the websiteWhich One Doesn't Belong? and other resources and I've always found the routine to be a good one for math learning and supporting conversations around math. But there was so much I didn't know!  This teacher guide--which is not so long but long enough to have depth and lots of new learning--helped me to understand how much more powerful this routine could be if I were more intentional as a teacher. The focus on geometry is interesting to me because it is an area of math teaching that I need to learn more about.  The book has an entire chapter called "How Children Become Geometers". This chapter helped me see the big jump kids do from elementary school to high school geometry and how much better we can do to help them build understanding by understanding the levels of understanding kids have and build around geometry. The book is not a teacher's manual. Instead it is a way for teachers to use this routine in ways that empower students. Christopher Danielson shares language he uses when he introduces Which One Doesn't Belong. He shares examples from classrooms and he helps us better understand how children make sense of geometry through inquiry. He also puts the teacher in the decision-making chair as he invites us to make our own decisions about which pages to introduce to children when.  He also has tips for creating your own WODB set.  I love the answer key in this book.  The thing about this WODB sets is that they are designed so every answer could be the correct answer. So the answer key shares insights kids may notice about each shape and how they might respond.  It is a great resource and a great place to understand how to create your own sets (and help kids create their own.) I love so much about this set of books. We had a conversation around the first page of the picture book last week and it was incredible. I introduced it as Danielson suggests in the book and we could have gone on for a very long time with ideas and thinking around these 4 shapes. I am excited to see where the conversation goes over the next several months.  This was a great way for me to take a routine I know and really deepen my understanding of it which will help my students.  Not only that but it helped me understand geometry in general and I now see the connection between this and several of Danielson's blog posts. I can't recommend this book enough.  If you are interested in inquiry based thinking and routines that empower kids AND if you want to learn more about quality talk in the math classroom, you need this book immediately! A Year of Reading Franki Sibberson  I received Danielson’s shapes book Which One Doesn’t Belong (WODB) with anticipation. I had been noticing Twitter activity on the math twitter blogosphere around the hashtag #wodb, and I was curious. The picture book includes a teachers’ guide, which I found valuable, especially the chapter on how to use the book in the classroom. It also explains the progression of a student’s geometry thinking, gives tips and examples of how to guide conversations, and defines some geometry terms to give rigor to my own knowledge. I referred back to the teachers’ guide many times when using the book in classroom settings. Danielson writes, “I made this book to spark conversations, thinking and wonder” (p. 36). He has definitely succeeded. I enjoyed using this book to facilitate conversations with first and fourth graders. Students were engaged and were eager to communicate their ideas and listen to others. I noticed improvement in their ability to craft mathematical arguments in support of their choices. In the end, the fourth graders composed their own set of shapes to challenge others with “which one doesn’t belong.” I also shared the book with colleagues and even brought it out at a family party. Each page in his deceptively simple layout has four different figures. He asks the readers to choose “which one doesn’t belong” and tell why. I thought the WODB activity might generate some interesting conversations and serve as a review for our geometry unit which we were concluding. So we gave it a try!   Excerpted from Which One Doesn’t Belong, Teacher’s Guide (Stenhouse Publishers, 2016) Some of our observations Even though the book says “every answer can be correct,” my students had a hard time believing that two, three, or four different answers could all be correct. We decided to find out! We started off with the first set of figures and I asked everyone to think silently about which figure didn’t belong. I called on Noah to share his thoughts. Noah chose a figure and explained why that figure was different than the rest. Sarah quickly chimed in saying, “I disagree! I think the third figure doesn’t belong.” She gave her reasons for choosing the third figure. After several of these disagreements, I asked the students to think about why they disagree. I asked them if they understood Noah’s reasoning. They all agreed that, based on Noah’s reasoning, he was correct. They also agreed that Sarah’s reasoning was correct. One student then said, “You mean we are all correct?” The conversation had reached a turning point. As we explored more sets of figures, I didn’t hear, “I disagree” or “I think you’re wrong”. Instead, I heard “ Wow, I didn’t think of that” and “I saw something different”. A WODB chat at Hibbett Middle School Another observation I found very interesting was how students borrowed vocabulary from one setting and tried to apply (maybe misapply) it to a new setting. Have you ever heard of a scalene quadrilateral? Neither had I! But I knew what the student meant, and so did the rest of the class. When I asked him to explain, he said a scalene triangle is a triangle with all three sides having different lengths. A scalene quadrilateral, therefore, is a quadrilateral with all four sides having different lengths. Makes sense, doesn’t it? But, is it mathematically correct? I don’t know. My students gave me some pretty good arguments justifying their reasoning! We decided we needed to do some research on the word scalene. Does it only apply to triangles? Planning for next year I plan to continue exploring this book and use it again next year, but with a few changes. I think it would be very beneficial to do this activity first, as a pre-assessment to our geometry unit. What do they already know? What misconceptions do they have? At the conclusion of the unit, I would like to repeat the activity and see how their answers and explanations change. Will I see any growth in their vocabulary? Will they notice new differences based on the properties of the figures? I think it would also be very interesting to have the students write their own reflections. Did they find this activity interesting and why? What do they think they learned from this activity? My classes thoroughly enjoyed this book and our conversations about shapes. It generated deep thinking and brought up a few questions that we are still wondering about. In a good way! Great book for having conversations about mathematical shapes for kids and adults of all ages! Further, this book nicely models how to have open-ended conversations. Math is not black and white and it's not always about getting to the one, correct answer. The language of mathematics is beautiful, open-ended, and full of contradictions and opportunities to argue. This book embodies that while disguised as a children's shape book.

Love the idea. Can be a springboard for a good discussion on geometry. Also an effective way of reviewing definitions and properties of polygons and other geometric figures. Have used in class to illustrate a part of math where there could be more than one correct answer.

This book is AMAZING. I use it in learning center for students with mild/moderate learning disabilities, and it really helps boost participation at the start of sessions and it's great that everyone can be right...as long as they justify their answer. I've also enjoyed talking it over with my husband and family members. It's a FANTASTIC book and what a fun concept that can be applied easily to other areas like numbers, equations, graphs, etc...not just shapes! I highly recommend this book to anyone!

I love this book. It's such an awesome way to engage with multiple kids of multiple ages alone or together. They can each come up with their own answer for each page and share their thinking and there's no real right or wrong and everyone is engaging in terrific thinking. Super fun for grown-ups too and allows us to see how kids think and see things we sometimes miss.

This book is amazing! Every classroom and family should have a copy. It promotes great discussions and supports ways of looking at things from different perspectives. Wow!!!

This led to very fun and in depth conversations with the family. It helped our 5 year old develop language she was learning at school and think about different properties of shapes. We were shocked at some of the ideas our two year old shared, and it even led to discussion between myself and my husband. Totally worth getting for a family with kids 2yrs-12yrs?

This series is aimed at African-American youth. While the graphics and images are geared to students 6th-8th grade, they are an easy read for students as early as 3rd. As a whole, these books do a fair job providing an overview of the lives of varies artists currently in the hip-hop industry but, as hip-hop tends to be an edgy musical style, these books reflect the glorification of a "gangster" or at least rough lifestyle. What I found particularly disturbing for Rihanna's story is that it includes details about her experiences with domestic violence. The book even discusses Chris Brown's sentencing, time on probation and response to the publicizing of his battery of Rihanna. While I find it is important to discuss domestic violence, I'm don't find this the best place or best way to discuss Rihanna's experiences. It seems this was a time to tell students about Rihanna's career and rise to stardom. To tell about the mark she will leave on history. Specific details about Chris Brown and his feelings about being a batterer seem like they belong in his story, not hers. I am in no way attempting to speak for Rihanna but I feel it is re-victimizing.
