Andrew Lycett is author of the definitive biography of Rudyard Kipling. As a former foreign correspondent, he has travelled widely and worked in most parts of the world written about by Kipling, legendary author of The Jungle Book and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Lycett's other books include much praised biographies of Ian Fleming, Dylan Thomas and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I am astonished that Andrew Lycett chose to subtitle this volume Traffics and Discoveries from Burma to Brazil. I had thought I was buying Kipling's Traffics and Discoveries (1904) which is the third work highlighted in John Carey's Pure Pleasure (A guide to the 20th century's most enjoyable books, Faber and Faber 2000). When the book arrived, I was surprised to see texts dating from as late as 1937. This volume, in fact, has almost nothing in common with Kipling's 1904 book. My usual practice is to read the book Carey treats then read his short explanation of why he included it. Imagine my frustration when I read (just now) that Kipling's original volume includes three short stories that Lycett doesn't include. For example:" Wireless', one of the three masterpieces in this collection, is a weird tale that points up the uncommonness of the common man ... The second of this volume's classic stories, 'Mrs Bathurst', is also about unexpected depths in seemingly ordinary people ... The third of the masterpieces, 'They', is Kipling's tenderest story." Not one of these in Lycett! What on earth did Lycett think he was doing subtitling his selection of Kipling's travel writing with the title of the 1904 volume? The actual editing is sometimes slack. On page 128, I was wondering what this meant: "No old man Butler did not go hunting alone, but waited till Buck came back from town." Now, old man Butler ...? No! From a transcript of the NY 1908 edition on the internet: "No,old man Butler did not go hunting ... " Ah, that makes sense. And now to the maps. Why, if someone thought maps were an addition, are they not more detailed? Only one city marked on the map of Canada - Toronto. Plenty of room for the names of the other places mentioned in the Canada section. Oh well, off to search for a copy of the 1904 first edition, or a reprint, to read those three stories!

This is a scientific work, and so the lay reader may find the conditional nature of the author's conclusions unsatisfactory. The history of genus Homo is ambiguous, fragmentary and dependent on very little evidence, haphazardly obtained at random locations. Nevertheless, some things are known; others can be reasonably inferred. Dr. Tattersall carefully lays out the existing evidence, describes its implications & provides excellent synopses of the contending schools of thought regarding humanity's evolutionary heritage. Despite the relatively recent publication of this book, some of Dr. Tatersall's conclusions have been called into question by more recent findings. This is particularly apparent in his discussion of Neanderthal contributions to Homo Sapiens genetic structure. This reflects the enormously exciting pace of discovery in the field rather than any shortcomings by the author. Highly recommended for the casual student of Evolutionary Anthropology.

An enjoyable (but short) read - covers "the World" (from a hominid/human perspective) through to the development of civilisation/cities around 4000 BCE. Starts with a synopsis of the history of theories on evolution - and provides a big breakthrough in understanding for the layman in presenting the non-linear approach to evolution. Makes sense, moving through the emergence and co-existence of various hominids. Also explains in clear terms how homo sapiens came to populate the earth and how so-called racial variations came to emerge. Well illustrated with photos, maps and drawings. The only disappointment is that the book is quite short - the text in the Kindle version is complete at around 70% through, with the remaining 30% comprising sources, references to websites and an index. That quibble aside, this book has brought great clarity to a subject that was previously buried in mystery.

I bought this book because I wanted something to bridge the gap I'm finding in books for a general but educated audience that cover the period in Human history between the Ice Age and the Bronze Age. The last chapter doesn't quite live up to the title, not quite making it to 4000 BCE. He gives only a very cursory treatment of the discovery of agriculture and the domestication of animals, far short of a fully fleshed-out account of the human experience just before the dawn of civilization. I don't feel I know much more than I did before I read the book.However, the book is very well-written and entertaining without being glib or dumbed-down. I highly recommend it.

Ordered this for research in my PaleoAnthropology course. Ian Tattersall writes with a flair for explaining reasoning and giving one a vivid glimpse of our planets epoch's and how WE came to be who we are now. The process of it all is fascinating. Awesome book!

I knew very little about anthropology prior to this book and I found it to be a great introduction. This book is very short, I read it over three days which means most people could read it in 3 hours. It is packed with info, I could probably read it again and learn a few more things. The book discusses the different hominid life forms that have been discovered leading up to homo sapiens. It's a very honest book, describing things we know and things we just don't know yet. This reads like a textbook, so it can be a bit dry at times, but overall I was very happy with it.

It's a well-written brief review of our evolution, but the title is misleading. It doesn't start with the beginning of the world, but from the appearance of hominids some 7 million years ago.

Ian Tattersall continues his exploration of human origins and the emergence of homo sapiens in this introductory history series by the Oxford University Press. I have read many of Dr. Tattersall's books and this small volume ranks right there up with his best.An excellent overview of prehistory by an expert in the field who also happens to write very, very well.

The Original Analects has clarified contradictions in the text by showing how they reflect changing social conditions and philosophical emphases over the two centuries during which it was compiled. The book includes a fresh and fluid translation, a detailed commentary and interpretation for each saying, illustrations of objects from the Warring States period, and an extensive critical apparatus setting forth the textual argument on which the translation is based, and indicating how the later view of the work as the consistent maxims of a universal sage gradually replaced the historical reality.

The good: A wonderfully detailed translation of the Analects, with a fair amount of never-before-seen insights.The bad: (1) this is a scholarly translation and is not for the casual reader (2) There isn't consistent inclusion of the original Chinese beside the translations and analyses, which I personally think would have greatly enhanced this book's value.

This new translation of Analects provides us with a fresh view on Confucius' Way as it was, at least the authors claim so. It is correctly pointed out in the book that the task of reconstructing the "original" Confucius is inevitably interwined with our ever-changing understanding of the pre-Chin Chinese intellectual history. The task is never going to be easy, and is highly influenced by subjective preferences of individual researchers. The authors provide an updated theory of how the Analects was written in the course of several hundred years. One thing I like most is that convincing evidences are given to show that filial piety was NOT central in Confucius' morality. However, there are some other shaky arguments. For example, their effort of establishing this guy or that guy as the leader of the early Confucian disciples is too imaginative.

An excellent resource for the scholar. Rearranges the passages into a reconstructed chronological order, but retains their numbering, so the reader isn't lost. Exhaustive notes, plus the most penetrating discussion of the exact meaning of _ren_ (though they spell it "_rvn_") available in any translation. Language a teensy bit stilted in places. "Common alphabetic" (modified Yale) romanization.
