About the Author

Bob Lorentzen began writing and publishing in 1986 because the regional guidebooks people wanted were not being published. His four Hiker's hip pocket Guides have set a new standard of excellence for trail guides. He's been an active Coastwalk volunteer since 1987. Bob and his family love to explore new country and find new trails. He hiked nearly 300 miles on the CCT Whole Hike of 1996 and about 400 CCT miles researching Volume Two. Bob graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz with a degree in cCommunity Studies. This is Lorentzen's eighth book Richard Nichols has been Executive Director of Coastwalk since 1991, a Coastwalk volunteer since 1983. He led the CCT WHole Hike of 1996, walking almost 1200 miles from Oregon to Mexico in 112 days. He has worked on environmental issues in his home town of Sebastopol in rural western Sonoma County for 17 years, including instrumental work in wetlands preservation of the Laguna de Santa Rosa and other land issues.

This book is wonderful! I’ve been doing the CA Coastal Trail as day hikes with two friends. We definitely rely on this book. It is split up into easily doable day hikes with a map for each section showing access points and points of interest along the way. The descriptions of each walk are very detailed and I’m amazed at how little has changed since 2000. He also includes the history of all the different regions of the coast. This is definitely a great resource for walking the California coast.

The California Coast offers some spectacular scenery and parts of it, mostly north of the San Francisco Bay, offer some spectacular hiking. But the southern end of the California Coastal Trail, the state's "millenium trail" as the authors of this book constantly remind us, is more imagination than reality. Private property, the Diablo nuclear power plant, environmental restrictions upon camping, and the lack of any actual trail tread for miles upon miles of the coast means that much of the hike is along roads with no real legal place to camp. The first thru hikers, or "Whole Hikers" in 1996 did their trek with continuous automobile support driving them to and from the "trailhead" and motels and campgrounds. This is cost prohibitive for the vast majority of hikers who might imagine that they can plan a through hike on this trail the way they might on the Pacific Crest Trail or shorter cousins like the Tahoe Rim Trail.The bottom line then is that this "guide" to the trail in the southern part of California is most useful for day hikers who want a pleasant walk along the coast or in one of the nearby coastal ranges and who would like the further satisfaction of saying they have walked upon the largely unsigned California Coastal Trail. Even the segments it is broken into are not convenient for long term planning though they will mostly make for pleasant day hikes. (Some of the segments, however, are too long for this type of use.)The book does have some nice features including interesting sidebars on local history and accounts of various conservation battles along the coast. (Oil spills, we are told, are not good for the environment.) And every chapter, indeed virtually every segment within every chapter, includes the authors' suggestions for where the trail should be re-routed. That in and of itself is enough reason for me to recommend that you skip volume 2 (this volume) of this guide. If you need to do a through hike of the California Coast, Volume 1, now in its second edition, and covering the northern part of the state is much better. Until a trail is actually completed in the Southern part of the state, readers and hikers would be better served by John McKinney's 'California Coastal Parks.' The dayhikes he recommends along the coastline south of Monterey offer a much better recreational payoff for this highly developed region.

This book's content could be summed up in the phrase, hit the road. A California road atlas will provide most of the information offered in this book. The coastal trails, when present, parallel the Pacific Coast Highway, however, most of the "hiking" is walking on roads. Perhaps, the State of California will further develop a "Coastal Range" sojourn that would be detailed in a book such as this. Walking highways is not hiking.

I've read the second book in the series and loved it so when I saw this free little story I just had to scoop it up. It's more of a vignette that gives one of the secondary characters in the series a chance at the limelight. I enjoyed this and look forward to seeing more from Barbara Hewett in the series after getting to know her better in this one.As short as this was, it was able to draw the setting, tease out the characters and offer a good strong plot. Well done to the author on that. Now I am eager to pick up more of the little stories the author wrote about the side characters of the series and move along with the main novels.

Nice little short story set in the framework of the household depicted in Maids of Misfortune and subsequent books. Think: Victorian-era "Rear Window" with single mother. Dr. Locke does an outstanding job depicting women who have escaped abusive situations and are on their own in an era when a woman alone was anethma; there was something wrong with her; there were few ways she could support herself. I particularly like the way the author builds the women's circle in the kitchen, drawing in all kinds of women. Her characters are so well portrayed that you forget they are fictional.This story had a predictable plot and a cute dog. It was a pleasant before-bedtime story.

I like stories with animals, especially dogs and the author's description of Dandy is so clear that I always have a visual representation before me.The story was intriguing because the Dandy used only his dog sense without any senses enhanced by trying to make him into a human, just plain common dog sense and that was endearing enough to me. Dogs have such keen intelligence and this was demonstrated.It's a short story and just the thing to put a smile on your face before sleep comes.

Another fun read for lovers of books set in San Francisco at the turn of the century. Try and start with the first in this series as the characters are introduced and are further developed in subsequent novels. Fun read. Enjoyed the political/historical commentaries preceding each chapter which reveal the political/historical climate at that time in SF.

I love how Locke manages to draw you into the lives of a different character with each of her books. I have read all of the Victorian S.F. Novels and absolutely love them. I find myself caring about the main core characters. I have Locke on my list of favorite authors. Love her books!

Well written murder mystery. Points out dangers of domestic violence women have always faced. I could see Mrs hope that her oasis, perhaps could help the murder victim. But it was to late.oan

Very good story. I really like this series, this is a short story about the tenants in the boarding house belonging to Ms. Annie Fuller. I highly recommend this story and all the others in this series. Dandy is the Boston Terrier belonging to a young resident of the house. No one knew he was such a good detective.

Sometimes a person needs to step outside their comfort zone to right a wrong. Not an easy thing for our heroine or US to do at times. She, her son and his dog are concerned about their neighbor's wife and dog. The husband says they left to visit someone they knew. Help is needed to solve the mystery . Whereas the reader probably assumes a book called The Beta Wizard Method explains a method, after a few pages, the author allows as how he will not be sharing his complete Beta Wizard method but only the part he wants you to know. If you are a careful stock picker and you examine the financial disclosures of the equities selected by the author, you may feel queasy about not knowing the complete ingredients of his method, because his website displays stocks that do not clearly fit those criteria described in the book.The strategy described in The Beta Wizard Method does have some Benjamin Graham elements, but in The Intelligent Investor and Security Analysis, Graham devotes some effort to the staggering unreliability of analyst earnings estimates. Analyst earnings estimates happen to be a key component to the approach advocated here. That's hard to swallow because Graham's 40+ year-old insight has not aged much in the contemporary financial landscape. Given the author's ascription to Graham's ideas, an explanation for this departure seems warranted.It is also not known how this approach works in a bear market environment.As a sort of condolence for not sharing the complete Beta Wizard method, you are invited to subscribe to a monthly newsletter and also follow the author's selections on his website. But the author is not upkeeping either consistently, it appears --he seemed to initially update his picks every 2 weeks as described in his book but has not done so in over a month.

I received a free copy of the PDF version of this book back in January. I have done two test runs with this method that have both been very successful. I would not recommend this book, however, to those who aren’t willing to wait out downturns. The way this method appears to play out is simple: when the market is up, your portfolio will probably out perform the market, but, when the market is declining, your portfolio will probably underperform the market. Additionally, this method is intended for long-term returns, as the author states, however for those that are more conservative in nature I wouldn’t recommend this method; for those that are more aggressive I would.

As an amateur investor, I'm always looking at ways to increase my knowledge of the market and stock picking. This manual is loaded with info on how to do your own research and pick the right mix of stocks for your portfolio. A great read, he also has a great newsletter to sign up for as well to see his own mix of stocks.

About the Author

Sarah Corbin Robert was the daughter-in-law of the original author and the trustee of Robert's Rules of Order, Revised. She headed the authorship team that produced the most extensive general revision of the work. Henry M. Robert III is the grandson of General Henry M. Robert and has served as president of the Maryland Association of Parliamentarians and as parliamentarian for the National Association of Parliamentarians (NAP). William J. Evans, a retired attorney, was president of NAP from 1979 to 1981 and has also served as its parliamentarian. Daniel H. Honemann is an attorney in Maryland and a past president of the Maryland Association of Parliamentarians. Thomas J. After attending meetings the past 30 years through the schools and church that are supposed to follow Roberts Rules, I finally decided to purchase THE OFFICIAL up to date Roberts Rules complete edition.Do not buy books that are a commentary, summary, "cliff notes," or "dummy" versions of Roberts Rules. Go to the source and this is it!Get out a pen or highlighter as you read noteworthy sections for your meetings.This is not boring and you can skim the less important sections relevant to your meetings.My take away for Roberts Rules is not to know them to be the expert at meetings on parliamentary procedure or to know rules for the sake or rules, but on how to keep meetings moving and treat all participants with respect. Not a bad lesson for all of us!Finally purchase the hardcover edition so you can pass this on to the presidents of your organizations.

As a lawyer and parliamentarian, when I am asked about proper procedure at a meeting, my first question is: What rules do you use? Is there an applicable statute, or bylaws or rules that the organization has adopted? Nine times out of ten, the answer is: "Robert's Rules of Order." Robert's is the most widely used parliamentary manual in the United States.General Henry M. Robert published the original "Robert's Rules" in 1875 and 1876 and, since the copyright on that edition (and the next few editions) has long since expired, there are numerous unofficial editions on the market. The third edition, published in 1893, is still marketed in paperback by more than one publisher as the "original" Robert's Rules. With the copyright expired, even the name "Robert's" has passed into the public domain, and many imitators have slapped the name "Robert's" on books of parliamentary procedure that bear minimal relation to General Robert's work (much as many dictionaries claim the name "Webster's" without any connection to Noah Webster or the Merriam-Webster brand that carries on his work). This book is the real Robert's, composed by an editorial board appointed by General Robert's heirs (including his descendant Henry III, an eminent parliamentarian in his own right). Now in its 11th edition, published in September 2011, this book "supersedes all previous editions and is intended automatically become the parliamentary authority in organizations whose bylaws prescribe 'Robert's Rules of Order' ... or the like, without specifying a particular edition."The 11th edition, the first new edition in 11 years, incorporates various issues that the authors have addressed informally since the 10th edition was published in 2000. For example, the chapter on disciplinary procedures has been fleshed out so that it has become a practical rather than a theoretical guide, and new provisions have been added about electronic notice and about participation in meetings by phone or by internet connection. (There are still quite a few archaisms, though: the presiding officer is still referred to as "he," while the secretary is "he or she." And the arcane and archaic motion to "reconsider and enter on the minutes" is still around.) This edition is being released in conjunction with the new (2d) edition of the shorter and more user-friendly "Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised in Brief," an authoritative abridgment that will serve as an adequate alternative for users who don't need the full 669-page version.Robert's is not necessarily the best parliamentary manual on the market: "Modern Parliamentary Procedure" by Ray Keesey is far more logical and user-friendly, and "The Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure" by Alice Sturgis (commissioned by the American Institute of Parliamentarians as a contemporary alternative to Robert's) is more readable and more rooted in modern practice. But no other book has gained as much as a toehold in Robert's dominance in the market. If you are interested in parliamentary procedure, or figuring out how most organizations work in the 21st-century United States, this Robert's is indispensable.

Pros: Same information as the cheaper paperback editionCon: Same size as the cheaper paperback edition, therefore the same smaller print.Lesson: Don't assume that a hardback is a larger size with larger print than a paperback or a trade edition. I hope the pages don't fall out like they do in the paperback edition.

For the rest of us, it's a little tedious. Too much detail, stick with the "Dummies" version and you will get all you need, because let's face it, except for those totally nerdy folks no one really needs this much detail....damn, it's 716 pages long...do you really need that much information to just withdraw a motion or table a discussion...Not really. I'd recommend you stick with the Dummies version....and who really FOLLOWS Robert's Rules??? Not too many folks as you will see if you buy this tome.

Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised (RONR) is THE authority for running meetings. The current version (11th ed.) is the parliamentary authority specified by most civic associations, clubs, non-profits, churches, political parties, and even corporations to be used in running their meetings. Other works titled "Robert's" are out there, based on previous editions that are no longer protected by copyright. Those should be avoided.The whole point of having a standard set of rules, which Gen. Robert appreciated from the start, is that the process of making decisions is quite similar no matter what the purpose of the organization. Knowing just a bit about Robert's Rules, you can move from one organization to another, even in different parts of the country, and be confident in participating in the decision-making of a group you have just joined.Now, the full Rules are quite complex, and most of the details about precedence and priority will seldom if ever arise in a typical meeting. The complexity arises from situations that have come about, which have engendered a logical extension of the Rules into new provisions, and they are there if needed. In my decades of experience participating in a number of groups, I can't recall any time we had more than four motions pending -- let's say, a Main Motion, Amendment, Secondary Amendment, then a Point of Order.In addition to explaining all the various motions, Robert's contains a wealth of information on running different kinds of meetings, conventions, boards, writing bylaws, agendas. minutes, running elections, duties of officers, on and on.My only quibble, and the reason for not giving it five stars, is that the current edition does not reflect the recent expansion of interest in various election methods (Condorcet methods, Single Transferable Vote, etc.) which provide a better reflection of the will of an assembly than simple plurality voting. RONR 11 does spend a few pages on these issues, but for my purposes not quite enough. This may simply be my own interests, and not a valid criticism of the work itself, which is, again, invaluable and without peer.
